Crafting Many Items Seems Cost Prohibitive

Hey All,

New to NWW 2 and am enjoying it, but one aspect of the game seems out of whack and thus pointless.

The ability to create your own items is a great feature in the game, but it seems like the cost is way too prohibitive to be actually functional in many cases. Two examples:

1) I make a wand of magic missiles by casting the spell on a wand (5th level mage). I then see around 6000gp disappear from my funds (I only had around 7.5k) and I end up with a wand with 7 shots?

2) I scribe a scroll of a certain spell, which ends up costing me around 700gp. A scroll for that particular spell at my same level can be bought for 400gp in a store.

My point is that at the costs involved, actually making some items is not worth it at all. You are much better shopping around to buy it, or take off it off someone's corpse.

There are too many more financially prudent ways to acquire items, and even if certain items cannot be bought, money is better spent on other things than creating them at these prices.

Like the wand above, that wand with 7 charges..even if created it @ level 13 and got 7 missiles out of each blast (avg dam = 24.5 each charge), it is not worth the amount of potions of various types I could buy for the 6000gp.

I may very well be missing something, but I can't figure out what. I am well aware that creating items cannot be made cheap because of balance, but this seems a bit too much in the other direction.   Posted Image

For wands, scrolls and potions, I'd agree with you. Since I'm too innately stingy to use these items anyway, spending an overpriced amount of gold - AND XP! - on them, after investing a feat, no less, seems ridiculous. In tough, low-magic campaigns where these items are rare, however, it might be useful to stock up on space charges of items. Storing "might need" spells on these, like removal spells and things, can be handy, since then you only use them if you do need them, rather than burning through many charges often.

Crafting weapons and armour is overpowered, though.

Crafting disposable wands can be useful in select circumstances. Fortunately NWN2 does away with the experience cost for item creation. It was truly a pain in NWN. The main use for wand crafting is for characters without spontaneous casting who want to keep an expansive spell repertoire. You can craft wands of useful utility spells or magic that might be useful in a pinch. That way you can memorize other spells in those slots instead.

Crafting no save allowed spells such as Lesser Missile Storm or Ice Storm ensure your mage is never without an offense. This comes in handy in modules with rest restrictions or dangers such as MotB. It's useful if you play a rogue and want to expand her bag of tricks. I'm quite fond of the feat really. Since I prefer to play sorcerers, having Sand craft wands of spells my character doesn't know comes in handy. Also, money is no issue once you're deep into Act II. Crossroad Keep can net you a ton of coin if you manage it correctly. MotB is even worse. You can find a fortune in a barrel or and dirt mound. XD

Potions aren't as handy in my opinion. Any class can drink a potion, but creating them one apiece cuts down on their usefulness IMO. Scribe Scroll is similar to Craft Wand but can get extremely expensive. It's main use is fleshing out the spellbooks of two wizards in a party by having each learn different spells and then scribing each other scrolls. It's also handy in the way Craft Wand is since there is no 4th spell level cap. However, the expense and limitation of scribing a scroll at time makes it very costly. I usually reserve it for extremely useful spells I might want a back-up of in a pinch and not utility magic.

I never craft wands, but weapon & armour crafting is very nice.

I always take the Mithril chainmail from some Orc in the OC, enchant it and use it until the very end of MOTB.

Being able to craft Cloaks of Charisma +8, Boots of striding +8, Belts of agility +8 makes the game even easier than it already is, though.

Does anyone have a good source for crafting items. I want to create my own light armors for my new Chaotic Evil Spirit shaman.

Eh yeah the crafting cost is ass backwards, but certain enchantments to armors and weapons when you want to specialize equipment that you can't get in a store is wonderful. Especially in SOZ, when you kill the one yuan-ti woman and she drops a poisonous short sword +3 on you. I added some enchantments and renamed it "Merrshaulk's Holy Venom" because I was a yuan-ti as well and wanted her to have spiffy weapons armor blessed by snake gods. That's the cool thing about crafting, you can name your weapons and armor whatever you want.
