OK, so I recently finished BG1 for the first time and now I'm about 10-15 hours into BG2, not counting backtracks and reloads. Loving it so far.
My question is how do you use Minsc's ranger abilities? I've been using him as a general tank, with a good axe and plate mail. Once in a while I have him use a bow. I only recently remembered he's a ranger.
What's a good way of using his ranger abilities? I've got a thief to stealth and scout, so why would I use a big guy in plate mail? Any ideas? Or do most people use him like I do, and the ranger part is just for story/role-play? Am I missing out on some crucial Minsc abilities?
Thanks.
Using Minsc in BG2? How?

The special abilities of the unkitted ranger are pointless.

Rangers aren't necessarily ranged. Basically they're just warriors, where a fighter would be more a military style warrior, a ranger is more out doors one their own style. As well, if I recall, Minsc's back story had him training to be, or once was, a barbarian. So his fighting style probably shouldn't be far from it. Pretty sure must people use him as a two handed tank.

Minsc is pretty much Ranger in name only, he plays a lot more like a Berserker/Barbarian. He does get a few spells once he reaches a certain level so you can always supplement his front line abilities with Armor of Faith.
Pretty much the only things Minsc gets out of being a Ranger is having a favored enemy, a pittance of spell casting ability and 2 free pips in 2 weapon fighting. I guess if you want to make the most of his being a Ranger focus on dual wielding (a reach I know.) As far as Stealth goes, base class Rangers hardly benefit from the ability in BG2 since they'll trip over traps, can't unlock doors/containers outside of bashing and have no backstab multiplier to take advantage of first strikes. Valygar can fulfill this role somewhat more appropriately if that's what you're looking for.

Lowlevel Armor of Faith is relatively pointless, but if you combine it with Hardiness (and possibly Defender of Easthaven) it becomes a very good protection spell. Besides that, rangers are fighters with less levels.

Thanks all. This game is so complex I thought I might be missing something. I guess not.
He's just a fighter you can make go berzerk every once in a while.

A fighter without grandmastery. It's kinda funny how many people have regarded him as an excellent tank or atleast better than the other npc's. He really is kinda lacking if we compare him to Korgan, Keldorn or Mazzy if we are comparing tanks. It still doesn't mean he's necessarily bad or anything, after all you can use any npc and do well.

Actually, in my books Minsc and Valygar are better tanks than Korgan and Mazzy. Keldorn with >50% MR is another story of course.
Edit: And in the vanilla game there isn't much point to grandmastery, and certainly none when you're just comparing tanking ability.

I can understand the rationale behind Minsc, but Valygar over Korgan? Korgan gets more or less the same item draw and trades minor spell casting for multiple castings of the mighty Berserk skill. I'd say having the capability to call upon all those sweet, sweet immunities far outstrips any trickery Valygar can conjure up with his few spells.

Good thing you mentioned immunities, because Valygar can easily be made immune to most forms of non-physical damage (and we all know that rangers can get 85% physical resistance).
His armor is really useful in this, being one of the few sources of magic damage resistance (+ Belt of Inertial Barrier + Armor of Faith = 100%)
Korgan can survive Imprisonment attempts, but Valygar can survive just about everything else, if equipped properly.

Ok I guess Im too focused on BG2 (not TOB) when Im comparing these characters. I rarely play beyond SoA so Hardiness and other HLA dont come into play until very late in my games (Suldanesselar). I also play with the tweak that resets grandmastery to the way it was in BG1.
So yeah...in the unmodded game it's of course pretty weak, almost pointless really.

Is there a trick to use Minsc's rage in combat without him slashing away at party members? I don't mean the one or two rounds after battle is over. The problem is if an enemy is suddenly invisible or out of sight (i guess thats the reason) Minsc attacks party members for as long as the battle is on. The only way is to bring the respective party member out of sight, which can be quiet a pain with Minsc usually faster than everyone else in my current game.

Incantatar- I was wondering the same thing. Anyone know?

The trick is to not use it, or as you say, only use it when Minsc's on his own (or accompanied by invisible companions etc). You can't stop him from attacking indiscriminately.

The only ranger ability that I use of Minsc is his two pips in dual-wield. I actually used him as a ranger shooting with a long bow in BG 1, but in BG 2 if my PC isn't a tank and Minsc is in the party he is almost always in the front. There are powerful ranged weapons that Keldorn and Mazzy can use (different ones obviously) that make them more productive in back rows than Minsc would be with a long bow.

As H_T pointed out, Val (
party) or Vickie (
party) can be used as mage -slayer-in-chief because of their high magic resistances, thus leaving your fighters and your own mages free to deal with more physically tougher enemies.
