I will say ME2 had more interesting characters, but I think they dropped the ball when it came to plot arc, consistency, world building and stuff like that. ME1 just felt bigger and more grand to me. At any rate, this will devolve into a flame war no doubt.

Edit: is Drew even coming back for ME3?

Let Walters describe character but don't let him write the plot! Leave it for Karpyshyn. It's teamwork, isn't it?

Mr. Drew Karphyshyn lead writer for ME3 please. I just cannot bring myself to care as much about ME2's characters and story as I can ME's.

Drew.

ME1 made me a fan of the series and excited for its continuation.

ME2 has ruined my interest and left me apathetic.

I feel very close to this, particularly after my first playthrough of ME2 where the character interactions were much shallower and the dialogue options too uniform in many places (how many times did Paragon Shep say something that would've been a Renegade line in the first game?). But I recently played through ME2 again, and while it's still not on par with the first game, it's also not as terrible as I first thought. It's just...not as deep or emotional.

On my first playthrough, I felt like no one wanted to talk to me, and by the time they did I was so annoyed by their earlier reluctance, I no longer cared about them. In ME1, every completed mission yielded new dialogue options, which left me eager to seek out my companions to hear what they had to say. The characters seemed rounder, more engaged, and closer to Shepard. And the dialogue options Shep gets in response were more varied, allowing you to RP whatever kind of character you want. Both of these were missing from the sequel to a large extent.

So...my vote goes to Drew, too.

Pretty much sums up the writing for me too.

Have to admit though, just the writing alone isn't enought to make me give up entirely on ME3.  But it was the butchering of the core game mechanics added to the second rate writing of ME2 that has pushed me over the edge into not preordering ME3.

Depending upon what info Bioware release closer to it's release, ( about game mechanics and story ), I might forgo buying ME3 altogether and just rent it.

Bioware games used to be an instant buy for me because I knew i'd get a quality experience, but not anymore, Bioware's current bussines direction has me worried and has already stopped me from getting DA2.

Karpyshyn by far. Ascension is much, much better than ME2's plot itself.

I share your concerns. ME brought something exciting to the RPG experience, with a killer, different story than we usually get. ME2 took the Hollywood road with bland and stereotyped characters, an half-baked story and streamlined gameplay. There's NOTHING other than a shooting component and the dialogue system in ME2, it's horribly shallow and one-dimensional. ME3's story doesn't look like it'll turn things up, but we can always hope. Otherwise, so far I'll buy ME3 when it'll be at least half the price.

Karpyshyn helped creating a world I found very interesting, but I found the characters to be a little lacking in the first game. The second game fixed some parts of that, but the informal parts that I liked disappeared a little.

On the other hand, I like the books much more than I like the comics, so I'll side with Drew. Even if he's not so good when it comes to characters, he can really set the atmosphere right.

Well Karpyshyn has quite a few scientific errors in his books so he isn't flawless as far as story goes, but I like him. Haven't read the other perspn yet.

I much prefered ME2 overall - thought it felt far more epic than ME1 - even though I wasn't too keen on the scripting in Redemption and Genesis (I thought the overall plot for the comics were good, but as for the script, Mac Walters didn't write those... at least for Redemption, anyway...  I think he just handed over the basic story ideas to DH, and they took it from there).

Basically, if the writers make sure that ME3:
1) doesn't stay focussed on the Reapers' interest in Humanity;
2) ties what we learned from ME2 and brings the primary focus back to saving the galaxy;
3) and whatever story they've come up with is executed really well;

then I'll film a thank you sketch and post it on YouTube. :P

Drew Karpyshyn in terms of career overall. He was the lead writer for KotOR, and well... I don't particularly feel the need to go into how much I absolutely love KotOR, so...

To be honest, Mass Effect kind of disappointed me. I loved the universe and some of the characters... though the writing overall, and really everything about the game, disappointed me. I still love the game, but it will always be a disappointment in my eyes. Don't get me wrong, the game still has some good writing. (The simple fact that it HAS writing puts it above most games) I just expected much more. The way the universe was presented was awesome, though.

Mass Effect 2, while the plot itself is a complete mess, the characters were incredibly well-written. The dialogue was just fantastic. Strangely enough, I felt that the universe wasn't presented as well as it was in the first game, with the exceptions of going to the Migrant Fleet and Tuchanka.

In the end, I remember characters above all else. And ME2 had a lot of characters, all done well... and I personally found it to be much more well-written than the original, despite the dampened plot. Here's hoping ME3 has a nice balance of both.

Whoever's vision it was that was responsible for the Human-Reaper Larva should not be involved with ME3.

Well lets see here....
Drew Karpyshyn is a great WRITER....
Mac Walters makes sexual comics & ruined the integrity of the story line in Mass Effect 2.
Who do ya think?!
