Obviously the game isn't going to look like this. This is a scare tactic to get everyone worried so when they release gameplay footage people will be relieved rather than disparaging.

Yes because "relief" is the holy grail of description every developer loves to have assosiated with their game!

Hah.  touche.  However, I do think when a game is going in a new direction stylistically, they know there will be immediate backlash from people who prefer the old look.  By sending out some pre-rendered screen shots with general images rather than finished product, it gets people to start thinking about the new look and gets the backlash out of the way.  Now when a finished gameplay video is released and it looks like the 400% sharper and more intricate version of this, people are more likely to be pleased, instead of immediately upset.

Nope, you aren't.

I'm starting to realize that I think there is such a thing as textures that are too hi-res. The juxtaposition of the super high realism environment textures, the 'see every pore' look of the darkspawn (disturbing, that), and the stylized, angular quality of the art, combined with the 'drawn' look of Hawke and his companions seems extremely odd to me, like they're going for two different things at the same time. I won't bother commenting on the style, itself, since I've already made my views known on that.

Must be console screenshots, lots of aliasing. Even by console standards, game looks like crap.
Doesn't even look at good as Dragon Age.

Tsk tsk. You would need a pretty powerful expensive PC to top the 360's anti-aliasing without your computer slowing down. Lets not get into that now though, it is a debate for another time Posted Image

Actually, no.  But, as you say that is another debate....

Thanks to OP for the pics. Very nice. I'm really surprised at how different the darkspawn look.

I see nothing conflicting with the art style and the (very few) detailed bits. It's the inconsistency in the texture detail that's hurting the game's look.

You don't see anything inconsistant about highly realistic locations, with unnaturally angular critters in them?

Seriously though, look at the crest on Flemeth's forehead

and look at the crest on the helmets of those hurlocks

Posted Image

Very similar. Though the hurlocks' has a longer horizontal span.

What's on the hurlock's heads (there are two wearing htis in this pic) looks more like a sort of kettle hat to me...

Man, expand it up and see how low res the textures are. They are awful so low res that they appear as blotches of paint than fabric or metal. Oh my god this game looks terrible. What the hell is hot about  it? Seriously? Nothing. It should be cancelled and re-fitted to the Cryengine.

These look great. You just have ridiculously high graphical standards.

holy crap.....those new new darkspawn look IDIOTIC...that Ogre looks like some character out of Ren and Stimpy..

and that armor is horrendous (sp)....

I don't mind the way Hawke looks but I'm REALLY not liking this new "art direction"...and, as I said, the darkspawn went from Jackson Orc rippoffs to....pale....pointy...things....

c'mon bio..get some new art people.

Cityscapes were impressive, and not what I was expecting. Got a serious... Rome-ish feeling to them.

Environments for the most part still look god-awful, though. I fear for them.

EDIT: I really hate the extremely glossy hair. Can't Bioware just, like, move a slider down on that to dull it a bit? Maybe after some nice oiled shower scene or something, but not after a massive slaughter.

I agree. Keep in mind, Rubbish, the following:
1. It is VERY early in the production cycle
2. You can view those pics at a much higher resolution than you will be playing
3. Even then, most of it looks great.

I think the only things I don't like are the texture of the ground and the overall look of the darkspawn. I liked the look in DA:O/Awakening:

Yay. They fixed the girl's hands. They look more natural now. Not those giant man hands that girls from DA:O had.

Are they going to insert some explanation as to why the darkspawn look different. e.g.. a new ultimate race of super darkspawn, slightly less dumb and paler than before.

As far as i understand it this is supposed to be the same darkspawn, in similar way how Batman/Joker in the Dark Knight are the same Batman/Joker like in the earlier movies, despite visual overhaul.

If this is the new art direction im disapointed in Bioware, They push the envelope on everything its not like them to take a tremendous step backwards. Nonetheless these are pre alpha images we will just have to wait and see.

The graphics look worse then the first game. Have they got a different team working on this one?

It baffles me how someone could possibly think that. I was underwhelmed with the first batch of screenshots, too, but these look pretty darn nice, especially for an RPG. The hi-res really brings out the great details at close up. Character models look much improved over DAO. Those city environments look slick! Yeah, the armor of the darkspawn with pyramidic metal parts sticking out all over the place is still something i'll have to get used to but i'm getting there.

I doubt that.

They do look like images early in development.

Well, David Gaider made one statement to the effect of, "The game already looks better than those screenshots do," but other than that, there has been very little comment from the devs to assuage people's concerns about the quality of the artwork, so that does make me wonder.

WOW that green place sure is pretty, very nice lighting. Hawke's armor is looking pretty saucy too, as well as that Ogre.

But OH MY GOD the new darkspawn look awesome! Them eyes, them teeth, that armor, very well done!

And still hoping that that girl next to him is his sister. Like I've said before: It would be great to have a similarly aged companion of the opposite sex that WASN'T a love interest.

Honestly I'd be pleased to just have them say it's a redesign to forgive the blandness of the previous look. Previously they were just orcs and goblins with funny eyes and crud-eating grins. Now they're looking much more uncomfortable, less traditional, and more original.

You're either trolling or asking for way too much. It may not win any prices for graphics but it's not nearly as bad as you make it out to be. And it's still an RPG, not a shooter.

You'll find some lower res textures in every game, yes, even in Crysis, if you look for it.

Where exactly (as in a quote) has it ever been stated that any of the screens we've  seen thus far are from an Alpha build?

Has there been one? Or is everyone just using that as a "catch all" excuse?

Was it stated in any of the magazine interviews or online somewhere? I'm not being sarcastic...I'd really like to know and see a quote that mentions the word Alpha in it.

I find it surprising that they (BW) would use Alpha screens at all to try and hype the game. If they are in fact from a supposed pre-alpha or alpha or whatever.

Does anyone have a link by chance?

Inquiring Minds want to know ;)

They look okay. Same graphical quality as Dragon Age.

Lol I was just about to say that. lol. Ya almost the same as Dragon Age 1 which is good for me cause I like that art style.
