They look okay. Same graphical quality as Dragon Age.

Lol I was just about to say that. lol. Ya almost the same as Dragon Age 1 which is good for me cause I like that art style.

Same "style" as DAO?????  lol

Uhm no.

Are they going to insert some explanation as to why the darkspawn look different. e.g.. a new ultimate race of super darkspawn, slightly less dumb and paler than before.

As far as i understand it this is supposed to be the same darkspawn, in similar way how Batman/Joker in the Dark Knight are the same Batman/Joker like in the earlier movies, despite visual overhaul.

Has this been confirmed by anyone anywhere? Do we even KNOW that these are darkspawn?

I'm thinking these may well be ghouls - what humans exposed to the taint turn into after long enough (e.g. Grey Wardens who don't go to the Calling and get slaughtered). In David Gaider's novel The Calling a couple of them appear with the Architect - they are described to have red eyes with tear-like stuff coming out of them, lips drawn back into a perpetual grin, and sharpened hurlock-like teeth.

Might be a simpler explanation than "changed art style" for why darkspawn don't look like darkspawn anymore - they aren't.

Man, expand it up and see how low res the textures are. They are awful so low res that they appear as blotches of paint than fabric or metal. Oh my god this game looks terrible. What the hell is hot about  it? Seriously? Nothing. It should be cancelled and re-fitted to the Cryengine.

These look great. You just have ridiculously high graphical standards.

I agree. Keep in mind, Rubbish, the following:
1. It is VERY early in the production cycle
2. You can view those pics at a much higher resolution than you will be playing
3. Even then, most of it looks great.

I think the only things I don't like are the texture of the ground and the overall look of the darkspawn. I liked the look in DA:O/Awakening:

See, I just think that looks so much better. If unique graphics mean uniquely ugly, I'm really not sure that's an ideal marketing feature.

For the Nth time, yes, these are hurlocks and an ogre. And there most likely won't be any explanation in-game for the change of appearance, that would be terrible. They just redesigned their appearance to something that fits more with the lore and whatever they felt darkspawn should look like. As far as DA2 is concerned, the darkspawn never looked like they did in DAO.

I just want some consistency in the art across games. The hurlock redesign isn't terrible, as far as making them more like twisted humans, but shouldn't their flesh be dark and corrupted, not all chalky white? The armor though is bad S&M stuff...

Yay. They fixed the girl's hands. They look more natural now. Not those giant man hands that girls from DA:O had.
:)

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

I'm glad you pointed that out--another star in the DA2 book!

Looking at the ragged clothes of hawke in one of those images, it doesn't look like normal armor at all, this makes me fear that Bioware gets rid of armors in DA2 the same way as in ME2

Hmm, so I've been thinking. All of the combat screenshots seem to be from roughly the same location/time. The setting appears to be the same: reddish ground with hills around. And the Flemeth pictures seem to take place at the end of the fight. But it occurs to me that the "dialogue" shot is from the same place/time. There are hills behind them, and if you look at the positions of Hawke and Bethany, they are the same in these two pictures:

So it seems we can make a few conjectures on how the Flemeth encounter proceeds. The responses on the dialogue wheel are interesting, considering this information.

Is he talking to Bethany or Flemeth in that dialogue shot? I want to say Bethany, simply because I can't imagine Flemeth being so agreeable that Hawke would be so enthusiastic as to say "I'm right beside you" to her.

On the other hand, who is "they" referring to in the middle choice? The Darkspawn they just killed (I say "just killed" because they are already blood-spattered, and I doubt they'd stop for a chat if any were still alive)? Does the bottom choice indicate trying to attack Flemeth (not that winning would necessarily be possible)?

My guess is he's talking to Bethany, and she's sort of asking him what to do, and she wants to run rather than fight. I'm trying to figure out what she could possibly have said that all three of those work as responses. But I'd bet money that it's about or to Flemeth.

It seems to me that Hawke and Bethany have just escaped Lothering and ended up in a desert area, where they are confronted with a vast horde of darkspawn incoming. Beth asks Hawke what they should do, then Flemeth swoops in an incinerates them all.

Probably the same reason all your companions in DAO can.

I don't think BioWare would be so brazen as to feature such an obvious oversight again.

I suspect that these screenshots are pretty close to what the final product will look like at the end. There might be a few touch ups but I think its very unrealistic to expect graphics comparable to TW2 and definitely not Crysis when it hits the shelves. I hope we get to see some night time shots or maybe a screenshot of Cassandra.

If they appear later in the game, they could be some kind of hybrid--not as evolved as the intelligent darkspawn in Awakening, but more human-like than the darkspawn we see in Origins. I agree that some kiind of explanation is needed for their radically different appearance, as wll as that of the poor deformed ogre. ;)

Why would they be decaying? Are they not born from a broodmother? DA:O always gave me the impression that the darkspawn were mutated hybrids started from the original darkspawns that appeared on the earth.

The pale skin dosnt bother me, the teeths abit creepy but works. But its the goddamn nose, lol.
Nice catch (for me anyway). ;)

Apologies. I'm usually a good enough lurker not to repeat tired old questions. That still doesn't preclude them being ghouls or hybrids however. Agree with you on the no-explanation part though.

Agreed. That's why I originally thought they might be tainted humans instead, but apparently it's been confirmed somewhere that these are darkspawn.

Agreed. The whole 'hybrid' thing is actually part of the Architect's plan too, and I doubt Bioware's done with that particular plotline...

Both siblings have nice, stylized hair and normal looking faces, the cut scenes look more cienmatic (via screen shots) the art direction is much improved

Bioware pretty much addressed every issue i had with dragon age 1, plot/charecter depth/everything else was fine in da1 & i trust will be so in DA2, good job O___o; *throws money at bioware*

Well, by 'risen darkspawn' I mean they've been dead for a while, and then re-animated by a mage. Like the Ogre in Return to Ostagar, except dead for a longer period of time I guess.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they do this- how would you customize that armor anyway? Doing that saves a bunch of memory and what not for other things, so maybe thats the tradeoff- less armor customization in exchange for cloaks and fabric?
