Actually, you don't have to take Shale with you to the Anvil to learn. Ididn't pick Shale up until late in the game, so actually had to backtrack to do Shale's personal quest.

But I haven't finished the game. Perhaps if Shale regains more prior memories, "he" begins to identify more with his former female life making the "she" pronoun more understandable. Don't know yet.

If you complete the Orzammar quest chain, and choose to destroy the Anvil before you pick up Shale, can you still do his/her/it's quest?

The golem body is obviously genderless, but the soul and memories are that of a woman. Even Wynne refers to Shale as a she at a couple points after the fact.

Shale's voice is definitely female. I knew it from the start she was a she from that alone. She also has stereotypical female vanity.like all golems has a male pattern for voice and personality

Yes, but wait until you come back with Shale before you trace the names, as she wants a copy.

Oh no.. I already traced the names, but did not turn that quest in yet... I'm afraid of breaking it if I destroy the item. Hmm.. I guess I'll have to find out how it plays out...

I did it fine destroying the anvil and tracing the names without shale being there. When I returned to camp she asked me what happened when I met Caradin and then requested that we go to the deep roads to see if she could remember something about her past there.

Female. Especially true after you do her personal quest and she regains her memories as a dwarf. I always thought the voice at least was male, but the more I hear it the more I see it as a more feminine voice.
Reminds me of my aunt Joan. 60+ and smokes like a chimney.

I don't know about your Aunt Joan, but Shale always sounded like she could have been a member of the cast of Golden Girls from the second I heard her voice if you added a 6 pack a day habit.Maria Caliban wrote...

Shale is most definitely female, in one of my playthroughs, her and Leliana would constantly talk about being sisters in spirit and getting Shale some nice shoes inbetween fights. Her vessel is genderless, that's about it.
Really? she kept talking to Zevrin about not being able to have sex in the playthrough I did before this one xD
