Just wondering if anyone thinks that the sneak attacks for rogues are overrated- it seems that both NWN and NWN2 have so many monsters- particularly late in the game that are immune to it. Particularly the wealth of undead.

My first character was a rogue/assassin, but I stopped going that route after the first go through

Yes, that's been discussed for a looong time. The problem isn't that they're overrated, but you need another source of damage to deal with that enemies. High STR, Favored Enemies, Weapon Specialization, elemental weapons... if you're the typical high DEX, low STR rogue, you're screwed until epic if you don't have any of that or anything similar.

Also, NWN isn't only the OCs, Sneak Attacks can be more or less useful depending on the environment,

For the main character yes I think it is. Plus for me the whole sneak bit is lost when the rest of the party follow and engage so closely.

I am under the impression that is applies to bow use though (that has been my obeservation). thus for a support rogue I think its pretty darned cool. It gives the rogue a strong supporting missile attack. With a few points of strength and a composite bow it can make a difference.

It works the same for the main character and NPCs, so I don't know why you say that. And you don't need to use stealth (if that's what you mean) to sneak attack.

And yes, it works with ranged weapons within a range, 30 feet IIRC.

I suppose it could work well enough in MotB - after you get the Epic Precision feat. Then again, it's still only 1/2 sneak attack damage (and probably no Death Attack). And there are way more powerfull combinations available....

There are many community made modules where Rogues rock though... They also ain't too shabby in SoZ.

Mostly this is coming from how the situation should be played out in my mind. I imagine the rogue sneaking out ahead then ambushing as the bad guys run past or something similar. Games mechanics make this difficult to do (but not impossible I know) but I find myself unable to get into this aspect of the rogue.

I see the strength of a rogue being in sneaking, stealing, information gathering and spying. While doing these activities the rogue really needs to be alone for it to make sense to me. I guess that is why good rogue mods are hard to come by but they are there I have heard.

I am going to have a go at one when The Last Days of the Raven is complete. It will be called These Dark Days of Waiting, but we are a year away from that.

In terms of this thread I shall thus modify my answer to yes I think the attack is effective but the opportunutities to use it as I see it being used as a roleplayer are limited. It's great for an npc with a bow though Posted Image,

I mean that, strictly speaking about sneak attacks, you can set them with Feint.

I agree with you on that it's hard to sneak when you have a full party, I was pointing out a different way to sneak attack, so you don't need to be stealthy to do it.

Feint is pure win!
And other party members also benefit greatly from the enemy being flat-footed for 6 seconds.

You do need to specialize somewhat to be an effective feinter, meaning you will need to make some sacrifices elsewhere, but I find it a very effective and fun playstyle.

Plus it's got a nice "dirty fighting" feel to it... some sand thrown in the eyes, blinding sunlight reflected on the blade, cloak thrown on enemy head - all in order to limit the perception of the enemy or divert his attention... and then a quick stab between the ribs....
