Okay, here's the situation.  I had a recent hard-drive failure.  The drive still worked, except that I could not boot from it.  I was forced to reinstall Windows XP from scratch.  Now that I've done that, updated everything, reinstalled all the latest drivers and such (yes, including DirectX), I decided it was time to reinstall DAO.  Installation seemed to go smoothly and I proceeded to download and install the latest patch.

After that was complete, I restarted my system and then prepared to launch the game.  I was rather shocked when I discovered that opon clicking on 'Play' in the configuration program that automatically launched, the game did not run.  I proceeded to try again, about three times, with no results.  There are no error messages, no firewall blockages (I'd already told it to unblock everything), it just won't launch.  I then opened my task manager so I could see if it was running at all.  I then discovered that daorigins.exe will run for about a second, and then shut down.  Still no errors or anything helpful from the OS or the game itself.  No new logs found anywhere in the installation folder or the user-data folder.

So, anyone have any clue what's going on here?  My system is setup the same way it was before my drive-crash, and I was playing this game under the same game-configurations for a week or more before all this happened.  I'm clueless as to what's going on.

Try running as administrator, and if that doesn't work, compatibility mode.

Right, I forgot to add that there is only one account on this machine, which happens to be the administrator. also know as me, the user.

Those suggestions have already been tried. The game still only runs for about a second (without any visual feedback) as if it were just a background process, and then shuts down.

I am also having this issue since installing patch 1.04. Everything worked fine in 1.03.

I also tried to run daorigins.exe without the loader and get this message.

"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem."

I have a problem similar to yours.

The official support could not help me after numerous attempts.

I downloaded the digital version with EADM, but the result does not change.

Before the problem I played until level 12.

I think is a problem with the DLC and some sort of protection against the false account.

This is my original post

I removed DAO then reinstalled everything, redownloaded DLC, then applied patch 1.04 and my game now works however I am now seeing some of the audio errors I never had before. Also I have to wait to play till my DLC get authorized.

I also reinstalled windows, mine is an xp, but I've been able to play the game since it first came out with very little problems. Now I can't install it at all. It goes all the way to a certain point and aborts and I get the message, "unable to find data file, or the cd has been removed." I have a notepad explanation of what is happening, (something about a .rar file) but I can't figure out what to do about it. I am sending some of this file, showing where the game starts to fail in the installation. Maybe some pc guru, (or DEV),can figure it out.

Is your media scratched or have dirty marks on it? If marks give it a clean, if a scratch you could copy the contents of the DVD to a folder on your comp and install from the folder hopefully that will bypass any problems a scratch may have.

Also when done installing, remove the folder you copied the data to.

How do I go about copying the dvd to a folder, and where would I keep that folder...My Documents?

I've never copied a dvd before.

Ok ill give steps.

1. Open up My Computer

2. Go into C:\\ and right click anywhere there is no icon's etc, and from the popup menu select new and then folder. Name this DAODVD if you want.

3. Go back and right click the drive with your game in it, i.e. your DVD rom. And select Open.

4. You will see files and folders, Press Ctrl+A this will select everything and then right click on any highlighted item folder or file, and select copy.

5. Go back and into C:\\ and then your folder you made, right click anywhere and select Paste.

6. Let all the files copy over, hopefully the scratch if you have one is not so bad, if it is really bad it may stop you from copying everything over, but if it does copy everything over. Run the setup.exe file. And follow instructions.

7. Once installed, you can safely delete the whole DAODVD folder (or whatever you wish to call it).

Thanks DABhand. I tried the instructions you gave me and they still gave me an error message., this time a different one. So I broke down and tried EA's tech dept and they basically gave me the same info you did. It just didn't work. I'm beginning to think my disk is corrupted, and I may just buy another copy. If that doesn't work, I'll find some other game to play. : )

Do you have any messages in Event Viewer in the Application log?  (right-click My Computer, choose Manage, expand Event Viewer, click on the Application folder)

Hi Gaal, I haven't heard of your particular problem occurring before. My first thought would be a check-your-drivers coupled with a try a re-install and see if that fixes it? Something you could try is during the reinstall process, try and run the game at each stage of the install. Install it off disc, run it while it's v1.0, then patch up to 1.03 or 1.04, see if you can run the game again.

schalafi: your error log indicates the installer can't read the RAR file on your disc. There's a few potential things that I can think of off the top of my head, but as always - try these at your own risk, and your mileage may vary:

First, your disc may be scratched up or damaged. At your own risk, of course: You could try gently cleaning it with something non-abrasive and a lint-free cloth, contact EA support to see about getting a replacement, or - be warned, most risky - take it somewhere where they'll refinish the surface of your disc if it does turn out to be scratched up.

Second, it could be that your cd drive is failing or dirty. Do you have another computer you could attempt an install on, or a friend's computer or something of the like? Or possibly you could copy the DVD contents as DABhand suggested and throw it on a USB hard or thumb drive for install purposes?

Third, the last thing I can think of is I recall an obscure issue with cyrillic languages that made the installer barf if winrar.dll wasn't up to date. So maybe head over to http://www.rarlab.com/ and get the latest version. That may fix your problem, but again, YMMV etcetera.

Hope that helps!

I know its a silly question.

But did you run setup.exe inside the folder you created after copying the files?

If so and files copied over correctly, as said by staff, it could be a problem software wise with something else on your PC. You could try the WinRAR route as suggested also, goto www.rarlab.com and get the latest windows version of WinRAR download and install (its better than Winzip and Windows Vista/7's integrated zip file tool).

Then try again :)

Again if the files copied over correctly from your DVD into the folder and you get a different error when installing, then I dont think your DVD is damaged :)

Alright, fire of all this isn't being installed from a dvd/cd or any other removable media. this is the D2D version. Like others have mentioned, I was able to play without any difficulties before my OS screwed itself up on me. I've also attempted to play both with and without my DLC packages/mods and I even reinstalled my favorite firewall/anti-virus and placed every executable used by DAO in every exception list I can find. The launcher comes up, I press play, depending on whether or not I've just reinstalled I may get the config program up, but upon launching the actual game, it just quits before anything pops up on the screen at all.

by the way, I am running in XP, 32bit, service pack 3, and with just about every other redistributables/alternate programming libraries/runtimes.

The installed version seems to be 1.03, but I do remember previously installing a patch which I can only assume was 1.04. I was playing the game without issue less than a week ago.

The only thought that comes to my mind is some sort of copy-protection system that could be malfunctioning. I didn't loose any of my data, but due to the reinstall of the OS, registry was completely wiped out. Could the program be checking for some sort or registry key along with some actual data on the disk, getting a mismatch due to the files existing without the proper key, and thus exiting without any errors due to a copy-protection failure? Does the D2D version of DAO use any of those copy-protection programs?

Update: I did some poking around after posting the above information, and I have a few questions that may have something  to do with my issue.  I took a peek into EACore_App.ini and this is a clip of what I found:

LogId=Temp9F0
base_cache_dir=
core.agents.0.id=AGENT_ACCESS
core.agents.0.path="C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\activation\\activation.exe" /locale={locale} /patchLocale={patchLocale} /gameName="{data5}" /corePort={CPPort}
core.agents.0.supportedtasks=TASK_GET_LICENSE_USER
core.agents.1.id=AGENT_ACCESS2
core.agents.1.path="C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\activation\\activation.exe" /locale={locale} /patchLocale={patchLocale} /gameName="{data5}" /corePort={CPPort}
core.agents.1.supportedtasks=TASK_LICENSE_ERROR
core.agents.2.id=AGENT_PATCH_DL_PROGRESS
core.agents.2.path="C:\\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\PatchProgress.exe" /locale={locale} /patchLocale={patchLocale} /guid={clientGUID}
core.agents.2.supportedtasks=TASK_PATCH_DL_PROGRESS
[EACoreSession]
full_base_cache_dir=C:\\Documents and Settings\\Gaal\\Local Settings\\Application Data\\EA Core\\cache\\Temp5E8\\

So, now I'm wondering... what is this activation.exe?  I remember keeping an eye on the bin_ship folder during a patch recently and noticed it unpacked a file with the same name into that folder when upgrading DAO to v1.04.  Could this program be hampering my ability to run the game?  The TASK_GET_LICENSE_USER part especially makes me wonder if this has something to do with a copy-protection Key of some sort.

Well, 2 bits of news, first I installed winrar, tried to install the game and it aborted in the same place.
Second I took the game over to a friend's and he has Win7, it installed perfectly, so the obvious conclusion is something on my pc is interfering with installation. When I reinstalled Windows, some .rar file/files must not have installed. I have no idea of what they are, or where they are. Is there a way to replace them?
This seems to be the missing, or corrupt file. [Wednesday Jul 21 21:10:02 2010] Rar error: error 18 RAR process file failed: Read error.v
I don't know if I can stand to reinstall WinXP again... :(

Disconnect from the net and disable your Anti-virus Programme you have running, and any malware scanners also (if you have any).

It could be that one of those are scanning the files while you try to install blocking access to the file so the installer thinks the file is corrupt when it is not.

Again do this when your offline to minimize the risk of infection (should be zero when offline).

Nathan, It's not the disc, it's something on my computer that's not reading the rar file, since my friend could install it on his Win7. .Could I copy the DVD's contents to a USB drive, or an External Hard Drive  and just play it from there, or would it still depend on my pc being able to read the rar file. I'm not very computer literate, and I'm not sure what you're suggesting.

Could be your graphic card is not supported by the game. But dont take that as a 100% reason.

I dont know what your desktop has or your laptop has in terms of hardware so cant make a judgement.

I more than meet the requirements for DA:O. I installed it last fall when it first came out, with no problems, so it's got to be something I did when reinstalling it. I'm still going to try the external hard drive and see if that helps, although I wonder if installing the game on it will make any difference if the problem is in my pc. I can't play the game from the external hard drive, can I?

You should be able to play the game from any drive you install it on, whether internal or external.
