Hey guys,

 I was wondering
if there are any other females out there who are a little put off by Bio-Ware's
continuous use of a male lead in their marketing ads. In both ME and DA:O you
had the choice of being either sex. I am little put off by the fact that
they are choosing to aim the market towards the male demographic. Why not show
a female Hawke in the advertising for DA2? Look at successful marketing such as
Laura Croft, Samus, and countless others. I feel that Bio-Ware could use a
female protagonist that both males and females would love to relate to, and
watch in trailers and advertisements for the games.

Ok, I'm off my soapbox.

I'm put-off by this and I'm male.

Ok. Default Hawke looks like an ass, same applies with Shepard. Problem? I don't sympathize with them, I want to kill them.

Bioware said they need a symbol for game's marketing. Come on, this symbol is the BLOOD DRAGON.

well i actually dont care what is on the box and how it is franchised. they shall take a girl, they shall take a guy, ill still enjoy the game. i think this hawke guy mainly shall attract the wider masses of potential buyers, and those are mostly male.

Heh, very good point! No one else has that, but sinewy heroes are a dime a dozen.

LARA Croft surely, but nevermind that pedantry.

To be honest as a a male gamer I have never been drawn to a game because of some hairy arse bloke on the box, to the contrary my male eye is more drawn to a beautiful feminine figure, not necessarily scantily clad, an attractive face is sufficient.

However that's just what draws me to the cover, my impetus to purchase the game is dependant on the reviews more than anything else. It does amaze me that when sex sells and the majority of gamers are male that aforementioned hairy blokes seem to be the norm, due more to vicarious needs more than anything else I imagine.

I am a guy and have no problem with a pretty girl on the cover or an image.

As a woman, I find it annoying, but I guess I can see where they're coming from. When games do get promoted with female characters, the tone is almost invariably 'look at this sexy chick wearing next to nothing!' which I would find even more annoying. So I guess Mike Hawke is the lesser of two potential evils from the marketing department.

I always find the irational hate default Shepard inspires to be hilarious.
Good job Mike Hawke, good job.

Yeah I'm getting a little sick of it but I understand why it's done and the image has to be consistent otherwise it would confuse people. I just hope we get to see some of female Hawke in gameplay videos and such. Like the first DA gameplay video of Ostagar: half of it was male warrior and half a female mage while in ME you don't get a single glimpse of female shep anywhere.

But it's just marketing as long as I get to play as female in the game itself I don't mind THAT much.

I'm a man and I agree - I'm happy to see a female in the marketing, as long as she is tastefully presented.

Unfortunately for us girl gamers, I'm pretty sure the men outnumber us. So if men are going to identify more with a male protagonist, it just makes more sense to market it as such. I shouldn't get too upset about it, it seems to me that it's just a pragmatic marketing decision.

I'm male and I'm very annoyed with the assumption that everything has to be driven towards appeasing the 18-25 Male set, with all their disposable income. (I'm 23, and heck if I have much disposable income!). A few more female leads in anything really would be greatly appreciated, and with Bioware's history of great female characters, you'd have thought they could make the lead for DA2 a female, rather then some hulking tank of a man.

It's a missed opportunity really.

It's stupid, but I'm resigned to the fact that every single gaming company would rather alienate female gamers than male.

I just hope we can make a male character in the game who doesn't look like a friggin' chimney. I liked how the male models in DA:O weren't quite OUTRAGEOUSLY ripped, muscular guys are HELLA unattractive. If every single male character in DA2 looks like Hawke does in the screenshots, I'm going to cry. God.

Why can women in games look hot by male standards, but men all only look like beefy macho male fantasies?

I don't dislike either of the default Shepards, not sure about Hawke yet, but I totally agree that the symbol should be the Blood Dragon,  and in ME the Normandy or I would have liked to see the "villain" pictured.  Sare, the collectors and an image of the Reaper.

I also liked the dragon with the images inside the wing.

Just so my point gets across clearly:

Image IPB

I am not thrilled by the fact that an "iconic" Hawke was chosen, who happens to be male, but I can accept it.  What I really, really am concerned about is that the last game Bioware marketed, Mass Effect 2, completely erased Female Shepard from any screenshots, trailers or art, until a few days before the game's launch.  I don't want to see this repeated with DA2.

If anyone is wondering *why* I want to see screenshots or trailers of FemHawke, I would ask, why should Bioware *not* show off a female version of the hero?  What is gained by alienating those who primarily play female characters?  If the statistics are correct, and forty percent of gamers are female, isn't that an important and vital demographic to market to?  Wouldn't sales be hurt by *not* attracting this audience?

Desire Demon: Best way to appeal to both sides. Make it the symbol of DragonAge (you could rename it BoobAge ) Mister Bioware: Make it so!

That doesn't explain why they don't want to show a beautiful woman on the front and would rather opt for beefcake.

1st of all DA:O's ads also depicted the Grey warden as a Male.

2nd of all Yes lets not target the biggest portion of people who will buy them game. Males between the ages of 17-30 years old. It's marketing, get over it.

3rd of all just be glad female Hawke isn't be advertised as a over sexualized big ****** bimbo who has the IQ of paste. Which like 90% of the females in video games.

Same reason why they don't show Cortana in Halo.

The male human noble was sort of default, yes, and BW fell back on him in most BIG ads, like the Sacred Ashes trailer. But the "default" city elf, castless dwarf, and mage were all female in their concept art and trailers. That was a fair compromise to me :)

Marketing identity wise, the red dragon is clearly the main icon, since the game is open to role playing as male or female, marketing probably should highlight how Hawke doesn't have to be a male. Unless the male default version is leagues ahead of the female version ... which is another way of saying, way less effort is be put into the female default version.

Does it matter?

I know I'm a guy saying this, but if the game were mostly female and I had an interest in the game, I really wouldn't care so long as I can still play a guy.

Not that I'm faulting you, I'm just asking you if it really matters that much?
