I'm not put off by it. I started playing video games by looking over men's shoulders, otherwise I never would have set foot in a Gamestop. How many women out there who aren't already gamers are going to pick up Game Informer? Maybe there will be more female-friendly advertising on TV or other venues where some women might actually see them.
Again, this thing of women playing video games started happening a few years ago. Give it time and it will eventually change, any female oriented advertisements in a 95% male oriented magazine will only feel forced.
This isn't something you just JAM in and tell the other person on the other side to deal with it, you have to ease it in.
EDIT: Erm, I just re-read my post, the above is not a sexual innuendo. Just FYI.

It's like I'm actually playing a JRPG!

Ah, JRPGs. Always had a problem with them. I tend to like the villain and want to kill the main hero. Because main villain tend to be a sensible, educated and interesting person, while main hero is a retarded teenager.
That said, JRPGs often use female-driven marketing.

As a woman, I find it annoying, but I guess I can see where they're coming from. When games do get promoted with female characters, the tone is almost invariably 'look at this sexy chick wearing next to nothing!' which I would find even more annoying. So I guess Mike Hawke is the lesser of two potential evils from the marketing department.
I'm a man and I agree - I'm happy to see a female in the marketing, as long as she is tastefully presented.
And that is why you should never go into marketing...
You know what would make me buy a videogame? A bad **** group of dwarves chopping people in two with axes.
You know what would make me NOT want to buy a videogame? A picture of a bikini wearing elf.
But, if I was in the marketing department and I had $$$ on the line, I would vote for the elf... even though it would hurt.
Any woman who gets upset or is offended over this just has to get off their high horse and deal with the facts, even if it is pretty damn unfair to them.
1. People like to associate with the character they play as. It's harder for men to associate with a female character. Men are still the considerable majority of the consumer base. Put it together.
2. There is a stygma attached to guys playing as a girl character. This is not so much the case vice versa.
3. Theres a reason every other nerd gets a hard-on when they see wolverine.

So if you saw a tv advertisement with the dwarves you mentioned morphing into different images, a woman elf with a sword, a mage with a hood so you can't see the face using a staff to hammer their head in, a human warrior, a male elf, and something saying who do you want to play as.

That would have been a cool ad for Origins. I wonder if that would work for just male and female Hawke though. It might confuse - but it would certainly be cool if done well.
Also, women make up for 40 - 50% of the customers in RPGs.

Do you have a citation for that? (Not trying to be argumentative, just researching exactly that issue as we type - and coming up with nothing.)

If you are experienced with these stuff, could you recommend a few good ones?
I have never played a JRPG and I´d like to try one just to understand what is so special about them.

Sorry, but it just isn't. If that were the box art for a game that I saw sitting on the store shelf but otherwise knew nothing about, I'd pass it by. But then, I'm firmly in the demographic of... what was it, now?... testosterone-fuelled adolescents? that Bioware's obviously targeting.
Yeah. That must be it.
