I'm not put off by it.  I started playing video games by looking over men's shoulders, otherwise I never would have set foot in a Gamestop.  How many women out there who aren't already gamers are going to pick up Game Informer?  Maybe there will be more female-friendly advertising on TV or other venues where some women might actually see them.

Again, this thing of women playing video games started happening a few years ago.  Give it time and it will eventually change, any female oriented advertisements in a 95% male oriented magazine will only feel forced.

This isn't something you just JAM in and tell the other person on the other side to deal with it, you have to ease it in.

EDIT: Erm, I just re-read my post, the above is not a sexual innuendo.  Just FYI.

How long is a few years ago. The very first time I played a game on a computer was in the 70's when I was touring our new computer department, back when they were giants, and the guys let me play tic-tac-toe. Then I found a simple little space shooter, pong and the arcade at the movies and mall.  We were out there, and there have been some of us playing for as long as the guys have.

I suppose we may have to wait till someone with imagination and money, starts up a magazine like "Woman Hunter"     But I would much rather just have some advertisement that is aimed at gamers no matter what their sex is.   If you can play as either sex show it.  If you can play different classes, show it.  Just give out the information about the game and all of it's capabilities and the issue would be moot.

Ah, JRPGs. Always had a problem with them. I tend to like the villain and want to kill the main hero. Because main villain tend to be a sensible, educated and interesting person, while main hero is a retarded teenager.

That said, JRPGs often use female-driven marketing.

As a woman, I find it annoying, but I guess I can see where they're coming from. When games do get promoted with female characters, the tone is almost invariably 'look at this sexy chick wearing next to nothing!' which I would find even more annoying. So I guess Mike Hawke is the lesser of two potential evils from the marketing department.

I'm a man and I agree - I'm happy to see a female in the marketing, as long as she is tastefully presented.

And that is why you should never go into marketing...

You know what would make me buy a videogame? A bad **** group of dwarves chopping people in two with axes.
You know what would make me NOT want to buy a videogame? A picture of a bikini wearing elf.
But, if I was in the marketing department and I had $$$ on the line, I would vote for the elf... even though it would hurt.

Any woman who gets upset or is offended over this just has to get off their high horse and deal with the facts, even if it is pretty damn unfair to them.

1. People like to associate with the character they play as. It's harder for men to associate with a female character. Men are still the considerable majority of the consumer base. Put it together.
2. There is a stygma attached to guys playing as a girl character. This is not so much the case vice versa.
3. Theres a reason every other nerd gets a hard-on when they see wolverine.

So if you saw a tv advertisement with the dwarves you mentioned  morphing into different images, a woman elf with a sword, a mage with a hood so you can't see the face using a staff to hammer their head in, a human warrior, a male elf, and something saying who do you want to play as.  You wouldn't be interested in it if you are someone who likes rpg games?

I want from DA2's marketing the same thing I wanted from ME2 (and didn't get, obviously).

Both a male and female version of the character standing together, with the tagline: "YOU ARE HAWKE, CHAMPION OF KIRKWALL". Or, actually, maybe better: "WHO IS THE CHAMPION OF KIRKWALL? YOU DECIDE"

Play up to choice and customisation angles.

Because, honestly, I bet there were no small number of people who thought Sheploo was the only "main character" of ME2 and didn't even realise that you could chance his appearance, or be female.

That would have been a cool ad for Origins. I wonder if that would work for just male and female Hawke though. It might confuse - but it would certainly be cool if done well.

I'm a girl, and personally, I don't care as long as I'm female in the actual game. I don't really pay attention to the Hawke in the pictures, other then giggling at his beard. It's something that female gamers unfortunately have to deal with. I think our group is getting bigger, though. We'll have to see.

I have never played a JRPG and I´d like to try one just to understand what is so special about them.

In DA O Howe was defenitely still an old school moustache twirling evil through and through
villain but Loghain McTyr came almost close to the new trend for DA 2.
The 1rst podcast (linked in the podcast thread here) partly sounds as if they wish to go
into that direction for the villains: you'll learn much more about their motives and background
why they think they do what is best for all - or so they intend - still early alpha, so it is
hard to tell wich elements make it into the final game.

At least, the way I know BioWare,  despite their marketing's neanderthal man archetype,
we will not be forced to roleplay an adolescent retarded ruffian
- unless we decide ourselves for that against other options.

Major gathering of bullsh!t here:

1. Many men, probaly even the majority, prefer playing women.  Also, women make up for 40 - 50% of the customers in RPGs.

2. There is not. Maybe you don´t like it, but apparently you´re not very bright anyways considering how much crap you wrote...

3. Wolverine sucks...

Someone suggested this for ME but I think it works for all of BioWare games.

I think with Hawke, if they showed the different classes and some of the different character creation options it would work.

Do you have a citation for that? (Not trying to be argumentative, just researching exactly that issue as we type - and coming up with nothing.)

@mopotter Hey, yeah. classes and stuff might work really well. I like the idea that, even if male, warrior Hawke is the "face", it would be clear that there are lots of options.

Hmm, I wouldn't say "experienced"... and of which I played most are not known for their great graphics so don't await that from them. Also do you consider visual novels as JRPG or do you exclude them? (some people do include it) Will japanese-style games also work for you if they were made in the west? If so one of the games I suggest to play for the greatness of story and setting would be Septerra Core which was too underrated, and if you don't mind adventure games then Shadow of memories is great. If you don't mind mature themed RPG/strategy games then Tears to Tiara is good, there is an english patch for it.

If you are into simple games but with good story you should try the Aveyond series

Sorry, but it just isn't.  If that were the box art for a game that I saw sitting on the store shelf but otherwise knew nothing about, I'd pass it by.   But then, I'm firmly in the demographic of... what was it, now?... testosterone-fuelled adolescents? that Bioware's obviously targeting.

Yeah.  That must be it.

I don't think so.  I'm not sure I would buy it if I had never heard of BioWare.  It's too cute.  Nice image, but cute.  It's also why I would rather not have the image of the character so dominant or just one character.  I like the image of the dragon with the figures in the wings.  This is pretty powerful without the figure coming towards you.

The available online statistics so far are all rather more than less well dusted,
as in 'no longer relevant'.

that one about mmorpg players is at least in part interesting':

My only problem is I don't want to see just a girl on the cover if I can also play a guy.  I actually don't want to see any main character on the cover I like the dragon and I like the images in the wings.  Will just have to wait and see what they end up with.

I've been looking at the ESA website and research (which say 40% of gamers are female) but it's tricky to interpret. "Videogames" is a very wide term. I'd be interested in RPGs in particular. Anyway, probably getting off topic. If I ind the stat I'm looking for, I'll come back.

EDIT: PS This is what I'm looking at

http://www.theesa.co..._Facts_2010.PDF

Taking a very loose approach and trying to see all the stats working togther, I'm guessing female RPG players are less than 40% but probably not HEAPS less, well not less than 10%. (?)

posted  2003.  Interesting though.  I hate mmorpg games.  It would be nice to see something about rpg games.  Maybe during my lunch I'll start googling.
