I'm a gal and I HATE female armors with belly midriffs. In a serious RPG there should be no need for sexy armors. Male chars wear full plate armors due to their high protection. Females should too.

Yeah, armor with that mid riff is just Japanese sillyness.  Atleast give them chainmail, but to be unprotected at all is just ridiculous.

Spandex is the best armor for both men and women :bandit:.

But this armor(or lack thereof) just looks impractical in my opinion.

Who needs armor if you can be sexy instead?

http://www.giantitp....s/oots0675.html :innocent:

All levity aside, I prefer my character's armour to serve the purpose of protecting her in battle, not giving men something to oogle at.  (This doesn't mean that it can't both look good and be effective, though.)

Haven`t read the rest of this... except the dev posts and the one above this.

First, there TOTALLY should be sexy armors for females. But, seeing as I`m male, I`m biased.

Second, I don`t see why a femHawke can`t be created and in the trailers for the game you select a few "Hero" pan shots that you do with both and then edit them together so the camera moves, the maleHawke starts speaking, and as the camera pans around him, the shot transitions to the same shot of a femHawke who continues speaking.

TBH, I have to say that I don't mind impractical armor on the women... or the men. All the weapons are overdramatized as it is. (Just try unsheathing a sword or maul of that size from your back, it's likely to topple you over.) And the eye candy is nice, so long as it's not being touted as realism. (But if you are striving for realism, then you sacrifice the eye candy. Thems the breaks.)

I would actually guess that the metal bikini thing probably began in Western fantasy art. But Asia certainly ran with it. Sort of how anime stylistically has its roots in old Disney cartoons from the '40s and '50s.

I believe its a fact that most users will be male so they go with a male character. Simple logic.

Girls into these games will not be put off by a male advert while some lads will be put off by a female ad. (their mates may call them gay or some such juvenile mentality)

Most girls will be just so happy they can actually play as a girl in game they will be delighted, considering the heavy male orientation of most games. This makes it obvious to use a male advert.

you don't know that...

maybe that's why she's complaning... she's put off by the male-driven ads...

You do realise that you do not know that to be untrue. While game companies advertising implies I am right as they are not idiots.

Well, I'm always put off, sometimes I just buy the game anyway. Tomb Raider--put off by the gravity defying depiction of a woman, and there was nothing to make me want to buy it anyway, Dragon Age--bought it based on the reviews before I even saw the advertising. Thing is, women are a growing segment of the gaming market. Is it really smart to be thinking 'they'll buy it anyway, even if they're a little pissed off?' Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't, but shouldn't they be trying to expand that market share, not expecting them to buy it anyway?

Fact is, I expect so little from gaming companies in this area that I'm not even put off by the male advertising, I just want  a mention that Hawke can be female in the ads. I don't actually get put off until I get in-game and see things like chest-baring light armor. On the other hand, the females didn't have gigantic waggling booties, on the other hand, they had breasts like cantelopes, on the other hand....

Bah! Tell you what, gaming companies, just treat the female characters with the same respect that you treat the male ones--like they're a positive thing, and not something that needs to be hidden, and we'll be good. Oh, and put them in armor that looks like someone is shooting stuff at them, and have them run like they need to go fast not get a date.

Lol, hey now, some of my favorite games are JRPG's, the old final fantasies, namely FF6, and definitely Xenogears (not the wretched Xenosaga) and Vagrant Story, oh, and Saga Frontier, and lets see, FF tactics.  But most of those games didn't 'sensationalize' females and their armor.    Take a look at Terra from FF6 and then take a look at Rikku from FF10-2.   It went from being a serious narrative, to a fashion walk.  If the plot isn't so serious to the point where unrealistic armor wouldn't detract from the enjoyment (ala Vagrant Story) then well, it's fine :P

My feminism sensor is running high here....

Seriously, what´s all the whining with being put off by the advertising? If that´s the problem, companies had to stop advertising at all, because whenever I see advertisement more than once I´m getting angry about that bullsh!t.

Also, once again: I find it incredibly unfair that women are allowed to wear revealing armor and men aren´t.

SEXISM SEXISM SEXISMSEXISMSEXISM!!!!!!!!! Get out the torches! Let´s riot a bit!

yeah since most women have the psychical strength to fight in an functional full plate armor; and even ride a war horse with it ? Sexy armor is at least some excuse for the lack of realism

As for the male lead, other that the fact that the majority of the gamers are males, the whole DA setting is quiet masculine

I believe sexy armor is more realistic in the way only a very skinny woman would wear ir.

Use it as a moral booster for troops...come on it could happen.

Actually my point is that the gals take male adverts better than guys would take a girl Shepherd or Hawke. They are more mature and will be less put off than a lot of teenage (and even 20's) boys will be. BW know there are more male players than female (even if it was 49/51%) they therefore go with the majority.

As for the Tomb Raider business they buy that as Kiddie porn since they are probably not old enough to go get a blue movie in a shop.

My view on skimpy armour is its rubbish, unless you can include it as wearable in male form that would be a laugh. I near laughed coffee all over the screen when I watched my nephew playing saints row 2 playing a big muscle bound skin head dresses up in a bunny suit complete with suspenders. Now that was a laugh.

First of all, I'm a female. I really don't care whether they feature a male or a female or some other creature on the marketing ads as long as I know that I can play as a female if I want to. I think they could use both a female and a male on the ads to attract audience.
If a gamecover features a man in his best years and it says nowhere "You can also play as a female." I'd be put off.
No bad about games where you can only be male. I just think if you can play as both sexes why not use that to your advantage in the marketing world?

Most men don't, either. ;) And 'masculine' is an opinion. In our day and age, there are many women who serve in combat roles worldwide. It is no longer exclusively a man's place to take up the sword and defend he and his, so to speak. Furthermore, it is in no way exclusive to a man to act 'masculinely'. Traits that have traditionally been considered 'male' can be practiced by females without any shame.

We're not saying that Bioware should not cater to marketing forces and act to make the most money. What we are asking or arguing for is any small crumb. If those teenage, male constituents you are speaking of are truly incapable of sympathizing with a female heroine because they see her as intrinsically distasteful, weak, or uncool (which is a can of worms in itself) then continue giving them male-centered trailers, screenshots, magazine articles, etc. But you can do all of that, and then release a screenshot or a piece of concept art of a femHawke. The two are not mututally exclusive. They can easily coexist so that everyone gets what they are asking for. :)

Exactly.
