What is wrong with feminism or being a feminist? It really disturbs me to see when someone turns the word into something with negative connotations. Feminism, quite simply, is the belief in social, political, and economic equality amongst the sexes. There is nothing negative about that. It does not mean 'social, political, and economic equality at the expense of men.'
That said, if you really do feel disenfranchised about men in games only being covered in bulky armors from head to toe, and want to start a movement for men to get revealing armor, then I'm behind that. In fact, it is very much the same issue as far as I see it -- one that shouldn't be a dividing line but a joining one. Equality in the choice over the portrayal of your characters' attire, covered or revealing. At the end of the day, that's the major point anyone is asking for: to be recognized and treated equal in marketing and portrayal.

As for the male lead, other that the fact that the majority of the gamers are males, the whole DA setting is quiet masculine
What makes you say that?
DA is based quiet strongly on mediaeval England, the feudal society was strongly male dominant; the physical requirements for a geared knight with an 2 hander ( Hawke on the cover) is hard to reach even for a grown up male, considering that metal has the same weight in a fantasy setting. It comes down to realism, in my opinion at least
Just rationalizing here , i dont mind a sexy female in the adds

Well, I'm always put off, sometimes I just buy the game anyway. Tomb Raider--put off by the gravity defying depiction of a woman, and there was nothing to make me want to buy it anyway, Dragon Age--bought it based on the reviews before I even saw the advertising. Thing is, women are a growing segment of the gaming market. Is it really smart to be thinking 'they'll buy it anyway, even if they're a little pissed off?' Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't, but shouldn't they be trying to expand that market share, not expecting them to buy it anyway?
Fact is, I expect so little from gaming companies in this area that I'm not even put off by the male advertising, I just want a mention that Hawke can be female in the ads. I don't actually get put off until I get in-game and see things like chest-baring light armor. On the other hand, the females didn't have gigantic waggling booties, on the other hand, they had breasts like cantelopes, on the other hand....
Bah! Tell you what, gaming companies, just treat the female characters with the same respect that you treat the male ones--like they're a positive thing, and not something that needs to be hidden, and we'll be good. Oh, and put them in armor that looks like someone is shooting stuff at them, and have them run like they need to go fast not get a date.
My feminism sensor is running high here....
Seriously, what´s all the whining with being put off by the advertising? If that´s the problem, companies had to stop advertising at all, because whenever I see advertisement more than once I´m getting angry about that bullsh!t.
Also, once again: I find it incredibly unfair that women are allowed to wear revealing armor and men aren´t.
SEXISM SEXISM SEXISMSEXISMSEXISM!!!!!!!!! Get out the torches! Let´s riot a bit!
Yeah, imagine wanting a modicum of respect. I must hate men and all things male. Feminism, eww.....
Wow, did you ever just make yourself look ignorant. So sad....

to be fair, in recent years most of the time when feminism comes into play it doesn't have the original meaning but women who complain about things use it as an excuse to demand things to be pro-female pro-their dominance, instead of wanting real equality, it is as if the worl starts to go from male dominated stuff to female dominated one
I am all for gender equality in jobs but to replace one inequality for another worries me too

Ahh, but that raises another issue: we, as a society, are more used to seeing magic in our fantasized Medieval worlds than gender equality. Why is the first more believable than the second?

I don't see the need to market with a recognisable face. One of the most successful games of all time, Modern Warfare 2, didn't have one. Maybe it's different for an RPG, I don't know.
It's totally different for an RPG. RPG's are totally story based, and thus character based. MW2 is really at it's heart JUST a shooter, and thus the focus is on guns and multiplayer

even if some will postulate that im banned soon and ill propably be dead at the end of the day, killed by an angry mob, ill still say this:
imo many feminists are sexists, just better covered. many postulate to force bosses to employee woman, even if the law is still a little tricky at this point (get pregnant from a man youll never see again and BAM you cant be fired anymore). i mean, its a choice that someone makes, and if he chooses that he doesn't want that much woman in his company or that he doesn't want a femhawke or femshep to be on the cover-page, that may be sexism, but ANSWERING it with sexism as many female organisations do (giving youre tools female names, postulating that storms also have male names, sexism is EVERYWHERE:alien:) is surely the wrong way. imo feminism means to focus on the female side, and by doing that they disqualify themselves as sexist. try to tell one feministic organisation that you think that woman also should be forced to go to the military for a short time (dont know how thats in youre country, but thats how its in germany, alternative is that you maybe have to go to some seniors asnd have to clean theyre butts or something) and youll hear a thousand good reasons (some of them would also count for work) why thats not possible. and, dont get me wrong, im not a sexist, BUT if we want to stop sexism and stuff we must stop to fight each other, find compromisses that are fine for both genders and work together! everything else is nothing then sexism on another level.

Appealing: No.
Sorry, but it just isn't. If that were the box art for a game that I saw sitting on the store shelf but otherwise knew nothing about, I'd pass it by. But then, I'm firmly in the demographic of... what was it, now?... testosterone-fuelled adolescents? that Bioware's obviously targeting.
Yeah. That must be it.
Who says that would be box art? I think people are saying that they would like to see, to go along with all the male versions of Hawke in promo materials, concept art etc a few female versions. Posters, a trailer perhaps and such. I'll tell you one thing, I don't think I have ever bought or not bought a game due to box art.

Well, yes, but DA is a version of feudal society where the sexes are pretty close to equal. I don't think there's anything intrinsic to the setting that's overtly masculine. As for the physical requirements...well it's a video game, what can I say.

I don't think that it is productive to derail this conversation in this manner, to go after the 'bogeyman' of 'femi****s' in order to ignore the legitimate points brought up by more moderate women. Instead of going off on the extremists in order to avoid dealing with the work of finding a solution, can we please instead look at the women who have spoken up, here, and treat them in accordance with their words and actions instead of vilifying them for a very small percentage which has not made itself evident, here?
