Just to add my two cents to the discussion, I don't see what the problem would be with releasing a few screenshots/concept art with FemHawke. Maybe even put her on the cover alongside the Male Hawke. Don't see how its a big deal if they do at least that.

never said different. i think the reason for hostility here is that many woman here feel attacked by nothing at all (and some of the guys, too, to be honest). heck i was attacked because i said that an organisation whose only aim it would be to reach aims for only one sex is sexistic...

No, you were attacked for claiming all feminists are sexist.

I think, as it has already been said, a lot of the more vocal feminists are the ones who come across as sexist or whatever. In reality, I think most just want more equality of the genders, in all aspects of culture...if that makes any sense at all. :bandit:

In reality?  Err, I don't think this is the place to discuss the possible existence of the supernatural.  I don't think it helps your argument either.

I'll grant your point about Thedas featuring plenty of powerful women, though.

Hey guys,

 I was wondering
if there are any other females out there who are a little put off by Bio-Ware's
continuous use of a male lead in their marketing ads. In both ME and DA:O you
had the choice of being either sex. I am little put off by the fact that
they are choosing to aim the market towards the male demographic. Why not show
a female Hawke in the advertising for DA2? Look at successful marketing such as
Laura Croft, Samus, and countless others. I feel that Bio-Ware could use a
female protagonist that both males and females would love to relate to, and
watch in trailers and advertisements for the games.

Ok, I'm off my soapbox.

i don't see a problem with it. i think they'd have a lot more guys buying though if they used the Female Shepard model as the marketting model for obvious reason that us guys can be very simple and we'd much rather stare at something pretty looking for any amount of time rather than a mock digital copy of our selves >.>

but anywho i really don't think how they market it matters the simple fact the game is an RPG should imply changeable sex.

actually, what i said was that most feminists i SAW so far were sexists and thats the truth. non sexism means same rights for everyone, and i dont see feminist organisations fighting for men who are in the disadvantage (what they are in some points). so, as long as they dont do that, theyre sexists just like men organisations fightening only for the men. if an organisation stands for the right of all, wether men or woman, its non sexistic.

My feminism sensor is running high here....

What is wrong with feminism or being a feminist?  It really disturbs me to see when someone turns the word into something with negative connotations.  Feminism, quite simply, is the belief in social, political, and economic equality amongst the sexes.  There is nothing negative about that.  It does not mean 'social, political, and economic equality at the expense of men.'

If you define it that way, I´m totally in favour of feminism. Unfortunately, every feminist I´ve ever met had this definition: "social, political, and economic equality at the expense of men." So I´m a bit biased against it. Also, I think equality between genders is already achieved in western country (if you come from Iran it´s obviously different...). Feminism seems outdated to me.

That said, if you really do feel disenfranchised about men in games only being covered in bulky armors from head to toe, and want to start a movement for men to get revealing armor, then I'm behind that.  In fact, it is very much the same issue as far as I see it -- one that shouldn't be a dividing line but a joining one.  Equality in the choice over the portrayal of your characters' attire, covered or revealing.  At the end of the day, that's the major point anyone is asking for: to be recognized and treated equal in marketing and portrayal.

Well I don´t feel like starting a campaign right now, but glad to have you in case I should wish to do it someday!:D

Who's denying the problem? I asked why you're contributing to it by perpetuating the perception that men are first in video games. Despite the fact that I deliberately mentioned possible icons for classes that are typically gender-neutral (like mage), you interpreted that as iconic male characters. I believe you and others have quoted 40% as the percentage of female gamers, arguing that male gamers aren't that dominant. If that's the case, then the only major problem left is perception--and you're contributing to that problem by making assumptions like what you just did.
I don't think "Why shouldn't Bioware also market an iconic mage, archer, rogue, etc?" is a demeaning question unless you assume that either Bioware or the people who like to play female characters are stupid. Every previous Bioware game has allowed a male or female protagonist, and IMO they've done them justice. The implication that what they don't market won't get as much in-game attention is flimsy, and that's the point I'm trying to highlight. The answer to my (rhetorical) question is that what is marketed does not reflect what is in the game. Just look at the Marilyn Mansen marketing from DA:O.

I am not making any assumptions. Again, my point:

We don't want another case of anti-femShep.

DAO did a fantastic job portraying women equal to men in game. I never once felt like I was playing a male character (well, except audio glitches) with a female mod, as many women do with femShep.

I am acknowledging a problem that already exists. I am asking for a little change. It seems you're getting in a tizzy about that idea.

Well, Hawke is typically a surname, isn't it? In any event, it would be an odd first name. Verner is masculine because of the etymology of the word, and, with the exception of English, almost every language has masculine and feminine words (and sometimes neuter). Inasmuch as it is used as a surname, it is gender-neutral, which is my point. The website you linked was for first names. By the way, "Hawke" is not included in their database as a first name. :) As for a lack of cool-sounding female names, I think "Soteria" fits the bill, but I might be biased.

No, Verner is masculine because it's a male name. You mentioned that those surnames don't sound masculine--Lincoln was a last name first and it's a first name. It's possible, and any woman being called "Lincoln" certainly sounds likes she has a male name. And not the cute "Charlie" kind, either.

My point was is that people will refer to you throughout the game as "Hawke" which sounds masculine. It does. Maybe not to your ear, but to pretty much everyone else's it does.

That is because they are the loudest. They are the angriest, the most self-absorbed, the most conceited. They are not the majority. Any woman here or elsewhere asking for equal rights is a feminist. Any man asking for equal rights for woman is a feminist. That is the truth. You have your own idea about what the word means. That doesn't mean it's the correct one. Calling "feminists" anything else is just another way to demean equal opportunity.
