Stereotypes are exactly that, a generalization.  I do know women who would not buy their daughter a game like ME but would buy it for their son.  They exist.  :)

Right. There's an "M" rating, you know? And most gamers aren't teenagers? And there are plenty of moms who would allow their daughter Mass Effect? In fact, I'm sure moms might be more willing to let their daughter play a game with sex than a son, the same way some parents are more trusting of the more "innocent" daughters over their sons.

Not sure if your talking to me or not.  But if you are, did you read the whole thing?  I'm wanting more advertisement towards women.  Maybe I should have said granddaughter, now that I think about it.  My friends are all grandmothers, and until I explain the games I play they think I'm on my computer playing grand theft auto running down innocent bystanders.  They think that because the advertisements  they see on tv don't show adult women playing video games.  They show the frat boys or the sports guys.   I gave my boss one of my copies of ME because she has never seen a video game that she can play as a women.

My step-daughter plays video games.  I started her out on the old Mario Brothers and Zelda when she was a kid.  But I was always the weird one to my friends who didn't get it.

That'd be an interesting thing to try, and there you'd see me saying the same if there were white guys in-game, they'd be out of context.

What are you trying to imply? I have a few arguments in my head, but honestly, this doesn't even seem to apply to any sort of logic, unless you clarify.

I know they seem to want an "iconic Hawke", but as somebody earlier in the thread pointed out, the symbol for the Dragon Age series would seem to be the blood dragon rather than the Warden, who in the boxart doesn't even have their face showing. If this game is about building and developing Hawke, then maybe the marketing should be asking who Hawke could be instead of telling us they're a dark haired white guy with silly muscles.

(Slightly off-topic: I know developing different builds for different classes would be all the more zots, etc, but I actually laughed at my puny 11-strength mage's inexplicable six-pack in Origins).

As it stands one would need to be watching these forums like a... well, a hawk to know that you actually can be female, and most people here are probably going to buy it anyway and thus... probably aren't the ones that need to be told with marketing. Even though you can only be a human this time, there's still two genders, three classes and a bucketload of CC sliders worth of variation on who Hawke could be, but in my opinion whoever chose this one-man approach is causing a great disservice to an IP that seems to pride itself on character development by marketing it as if Hawke is a fully preset character.

Of course, it's just not as common, same goes for fantasy wrpgs. Also, FF7 does have a somewhat futuristic setting, so this is exactly the type of game where no background makes more sense than any other.

I'm not put off by it.  I started playing video games by looking over men's shoulders, otherwise I never would have set foot in a Gamestop.  How many women out there who aren't already gamers are going to pick up Game Informer?  Maybe there will be more female-friendly advertising on TV or other venues where some women might actually see them.

This isn't making you money, ruining your gameplay experience, affecting your life or the life of others.

You are discussing a symbol which represents nothing but the game it's trying to advertise.  Take your cause to somewhere where it matters, like an association that supports females from third world countries less fortunate than yourself if you care that much.

This honestly just makes me ill.

Why do you have to treat us like this? All we're saying is that it sucks being a minority and feeling invisible, and it would be great if we could even get a 25% representation on the side. This DOES matter. This is promoting "male" as "default." If you don't see a problem with that, honestly, that sucks, but it's not my place to tell you that you should.

Just as it's not yours to tell the girls to shut up and stop whining.

We have the right to want to feel represented. We don't neccessarily have the right to get what we want, but we DO have it to vocalize that we feel marginalized and be given ear and respect as a result.

First you want representation in government now you want representation in video games. When will your lust for power be satisfied?

Seriously, why aren't homosexuals represented? Handicaps? Sea Monsters?

Does it really matter that Biowares default Hake is male? Really? Maybe I dont understand what the deal is because Im not female but who cares what his gender is? You arent forced to play as a male when you play the game.

The last time I opened an anthropology book, mind you it was a long tome ago, human race started in Africa and the first known languages had an origin in mesopotamia (close to Iraq). That being said, I'm sure in the ~20 years that intervened since I read anthropology books, scientists may have developed a different opinion.

nope what im saying is that theres nothing without a cause, it doesnt matter in which row we evolved. besides, im talking about dragon age here. in the real world, black people exist. never said different. what im saying is that the skin colour is related to the terretory (at least in a universe like DAs) where it occurs. so you need to find a good excuse for blacks in what we know of thedas when theres no really huge area that is a reason for black skin.

Again, this thing of women playing video games started happening a few years ago.  Give it time and it will eventually change, any female oriented advertisements in a 95% male oriented magazine will only feel forced.

This isn't something you just JAM in and tell the other person on the other side to deal with it, you have to ease it in.

EDIT: Erm, I just re-read my post, the above is not a sexual innuendo.  Just FYI.

I don't pay attention to Bioware marketing at all because I don't think it is remotely representative of the products they actually sell.  Think about the Dragon Age Origins marketing.  A lot of that stuff had me thinking it was gonna be some kind of psuedo wannebe God of War mixed with Lord of the Rings.  That's completely inaccurate.  Likewise all the videos before ME2 that focused on assassination, being badass, and scantily clad women.  There's a lot more to ME2 than that.  I find interviews and video previews and gameplay footage a much more telling way of investigating a game.  So does Bioware marketing bug me?  Yes, but it doesn't turn me off of the game.  I have just learned to ignore it.

While I understand what you're trying to say, it's like going to a bar and complaining that women can't participate in the NFL.  It's not going to work, trust me.

Best post of the thread!

Personally I dont care who they market to, but if I cant play a straight male hero, im not playing! Simple as that!

As for the rest,

This isnt a political board for equal rights or a political board for homosexuality.

Last I looked you could play male or female so who really cares who is in the screen shots or trailer?

Well...it's sort of disinformation, I believe. We come from a number of hominid species from all over the world, but the original humans most closely resemble Bushmen and came out of Africa as a result.

If anyone who knows what they're actually talking about wants to correct me, be my guest. :)

Thank goodness.  :)  I feel pretty strongly about they way BioWare focused on the default male Shepard in ME when they have done nice cover art in the past.

I did miss Morrigan on the cover of DA and it's sitting right in front of me. Thanks.

I honestly don't know.  I think I may have just gotten that idea from from hearing about mesopotamia as the cradle of civilization.

If this supposedly matters, than why criticize Bioware, a company known for giving choice to the player in regards to character, plot, gender, orientation etc. Do you see a female character as advertisement for, say , nearly every shooter game? Its not a company issue but an issue of the entire industry. Props to Bioware for giving options, they shouldn't be criticized for making a good marketing decision. They should be praised for being ahead of the game.

Again, you are being represented. It's easy for you to brush things off as being irrelevent since it doesn't in any way affect you. You get what you want, so why care? It's okay that you disagree, or don't care, just be more considerate when you post next time.

They're a different species. Humans didn't come from Thedas, either. Presumably, if there aren't any black people in the game, they're still at wherever humanity originated from.

It's just the demographic they're marketing to. the young male that wants more Kick ass action and instant gratification then a more classic RPG player. that generally likes diversity, and slower build ups.

Whatever, I'm out. It honestly just makes me sad looking at what some of the people here are saying ... I'm not an idealistic, but I thought we'd come further than comments like "First you want representation in government now you want representation in video gamew. When will your lust for power be satisfied?" being uttered unironically.

I hope that someone at Bioware at least feels for us, even though I'm not exactly expecting a complete change of heart.

And I hope that when my daughter buys video games, it isn't in a world where she's told that she isn't allowed to express an opinion about issues of worth wherever she feels marginalized.

Grateful to the ladies in this thread (and the more reasonable males :) ) who see this as it is.
