I have always wondered while playing DAO why the different races are the way they are.
I always thought that elves were the tallest race, but quick and agile.
Dwarves were slow but powerful,and short,  and Humans are the in between.
Why the change in DAO??
I never liked using an elf due to them looking like little kids.
Am i alone in this topic?

elves were more the not tolkien elves. they were victims of racism and stuff. making them taller then humans didn't make sense....

While being unable to romance Zevran at first and finding all elves unattractive due to their child-like proportions and angular faces, I wouldn't change them--I think they look unique, and better than the cliched High Elf version.

I have to say I would like Spellforce-like "snow/ice elves" and "ghost elves" (which appeared in one of the Dragon Magazine issues) however, those have a lot of potential

The scrawniness of the elves does bother me, and elves are my favorite race to play. Some mods have helped, specifically to give my female elves healthier looking arms and more booty. I figure it goes along with the theme that elves are a diminished race in Thedas, and maybe actually under-nourished.  I like the poignancy of that a lot.  Not your typical super-race.

I'm just glad they don't have donkey ears. Oh, thank you for that, Bioware!!!!

I prefer DAO's lore of races more than any other including LOTR. A refreshing change, but also a good change.

hmm. DA:O isn't the only that made elves 'short'. last I checked, Dungeons & Dragons had relatively short elves (in relation to humans...at least as far as I remember them in the Forgotten Realms sourcebook from 3rd Ed. or so)



but as mentioned: different world/setting, different rules. some stuff may stay the same/similar, but that's ultimately up to the authors of the world/setting

Uh, i'm pretty sure they aren't. Correct me if i'm wrong, but the elves have a higher dexterity and magic score, where as dwarves have higher strength and magic resistence. I'm pretty sure humans are the "balanced" race, not really superior in any one area.

Humans Are Bastards and Humans Are Average are such common, obnoxious tropes I'm glad to see them subverted. Humans are almost always, in a fantasy setting, portrayed as the most "average" of all the other races. And then you have the Can't Argue With Elves trope which is possibly the most infuriating. They are an entire Mary Sue species.

i didnt mean in stats, i mean in SOCIAL STATUS.
not only r they lower citizens, but they look like kids, non intimidating.
maybe they were made to not look intimidating, idk

but that was a reason i didnt like using them, bc of their build.

And y not?? they did a facelift on the DARKSPAWN, so y not the ELVES??

Only in Tolkien are Elves that tall and superior. In the common legends, elves are more like gnomes, leprechauns. That is, very small and cunning.

Because if Dragon Age followed every other fantasy game out there, then Dragon Age would be just like every other fantasy game out there.

I didn't like the elves at first either, but hey this ain't Tolkien. Besides, it got you talking about it, so the devs have done their job, haven't they? [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/wink.png[/smilie]

YES! I'm glad I wasn't alone...I kept thinking "man, what an ugly elf". Then again back then I was still expecting Orlando Bloom...

Not only in Tolkien, elves are considered superior to everybody else in a lot of fantasy sources (ALTHOUGH, they were influenced heavily by Tolkien).

Yes, exactly. I honestly can't believe you're saying that the game isn't being stereotypical enough!

And, yeah, why can't humans be taller or stronger? Just because we have no basis of comparison? That's most certainly the artistic reason for it, but there's no logical one.

1: According to DA's lore elves used to be immortal and uberpowerful. The got their butts handed to them and kicked around for centuries until they've become the worlds eternal refugees. so not looking intimidating fits them perfectly, if they looked intimidating they wouldn't be treated like complete crap. Which would then defeat their purpose in the DA universe.
2: Taller isn't always better. It's easier for dwarves to punch you in the junk when you're tall. And ogres would pick you up first. and lightening. being tall is overrated  /shortguyrage
3: Do we know the elves didn't get tweaked? I haven't seen any screenshots of them yet.

Every fantasy universe is different. These were more like the D&D elves.



Imagine if they had based the elves on the fairytale, "The Elves & the Shoemaker."
