Humans Are Bastards and Humans Are Average are such common, obnoxious tropes I'm glad to see them subverted. Humans are almost always, in a fantasy setting, portrayed as the most "average" of all the other races. And then you have the Can't Argue With Elves trope which is possibly the most infuriating. They are an entire Mary Sue species.

Humans really are bastards. Even in Real Life. Why should they be better in literature / games / movies?

I have always wondered while playing DAO why the different races are the way they are.
I always thought that elves were the tallest race, but quick and agile.
Dwarves were slow but powerful, and short,  and Humans are the in between.
Why the change in DAO??
I never liked using an elf due to them looking like little kids.
Am i alone in this topic?

Elves in DAO are frickin' tight. A lot better than the pompous idiots elves are in many sagas.

Thank You. Elves are my favorite race in DA:O and most other fantasy games.  I didn't really like the high elves in TES4: Oblivion (dark elves were frakkin awesome though) or other high nose snobby type elves. Im glad there aren't set in stone rules of fantasy lore. It's good to have some variety.

hmm. DA:O isn't the only that made elves 'short'. last I checked, Dungeons & Dragons had relatively short elves (in relation to humans...at least as far as I remember them in the Forgotten Realms sourcebook from 3rd Ed. or so)

Funny you should say that. In most DnD campaign settings, elves are indeed short -- so this idea that Dragon Age was unique in that sense is a false one -- in Forgotten Realms, however, all elves except drow are just as tall as humans.

BioWare didn't pick up on this for any of their FR games, however, which is why you get the typical DnD elves in them.

Honestly, my issue isn't that the elves are shorter than the humans in Thedas... it's that the male elves are modelled to be shorter than the female humans. That just bugs me. :P The culture and character of the elven people (both City and Dalish) is awesome, though.

As for tropes... it's not like Humans Are Special gets no love, guys.

gotthammer may have been thinking of AD&D, not the FR setting.

Looks like we've established that the OP was pretty much wrong about everything. How did the "elves are tall and awesome" meme get associated with dark fantasy, anyway?

for many years elves had this arrogance and superiority in all fantasy worlds, The elves of dragon age may be a vengeance for many years of that. I hate elves and it looks Gaider does too.

I guess it's actually the tall part that I'm curious about. That's purely a Tolkien thing. In FR they match humans, in most other worlds that I'm familiar with they're somewhat shorter.

Only in Tolkien are Elves that tall and superior. In the common legends, elves are more like gnomes, leprechauns. That is, very small and cunning.

Not in Norse mythology.
