Funny you should say that. In most DnD campaign settings, elves are indeed short -- so this idea that
Dragon Age was unique in that sense is a false one -- in
Forgotten Realms, however, all elves except drow are just as tall as humans.
BioWare didn't pick up on this for any of their FR games, however, which is why you get the typical DnD elves in them.
Honestly, my issue isn't that the elves are shorter than the humans in Thedas... it's that the male elves are modelled to be shorter than the female humans. That just bugs me.

The culture and character of the elven people (both City and Dalish) is awesome, though.
As for tropes... it's not like
Humans Are Special gets no love, guys.
