So many of the character support threads are filled with icky cyber-lust, I thought it would be a nice change of pace to have a thread dedicated to characters that you admire in a totally non-sexual way. This is not the place to pine over so-and-so not being available as an LI, but to celebrate your ME pals and appreciate them. The thread is intended for all character's fans, where we can all mingle and discuss our ME buddies without worrying about the romance stuff getting in the way.

I hate to see a thread left hanging and I'm bored so... which character would you like to discuss?

I approve of this thread and squad mate friendships.

Hmmm, I thought more people would be interested in squad mates as friends, as opposed to it always being about romance.

I've always been pretty vocal about leaning away from romance and concentrating on the platonic relationships, but I don't know what else I can say about it directly. I know you'll only get more dialogue with the romance interests if you pursue the relationship, making the dialogue feel like it was cut off in the middle if you didn't pursue the romance. I've thought that the writers should consider diverging the dialogue tree, one type of conversation you get with romance and the other you get with friendship. Somehow, I think you'd actually learn more about Shepard if you pursue the friendship path, while you learn more about the squadmate if you go with the romance.

Oi vey, sorry for missing this. I'm very much in favour of clearer bonds of platonic friendship in Mass Effect 3.
There are some hints at such relationships to be found in Kasumi, Garrus and Samara, though it could obviously be expanded upon.

Though I would primarily like to see Jack become more at ease with the idea of friendship. She'd be a perfect best buddy for my survivor of Akuze.

It really bugs me that characters like Jack only 'open up' to Shepard if it's a romance. I think that's highly unrealistic. In real life we open up WAY more with our friends than we do with 'love interests'.

There's hardly any relationships at all in Mass Effect. You get like what a couple 2 minute conversations with your chosen love interest? They should fix that first then maybe I'll worry about friendship dialogue.

Well, to be fair on that, what Jack does end up telling Shepard is something so personal, I can only see her telling that to a romantic partner. However, you're left with a feeling that Jack only overcomes her trust issues if you romance her. She might not trust someone enough for romance, but she's certainly learned to trust the squad enough to give her life for them in a suicide mission. Wish they had delved more into that with a friendship dialogue.

Of course, part of the issue is that there really isn't much dialogue to be had from the squadmates unless they're talking directly to Shepard. The best way to give the feeling that there is friendship out there is to have squadmates mention what is going on around the ship and with other people. Kasumi does this and you get a great sense that the squadmates might actually venture out of their respective rooms once in awhile.

My problem with the Mass Effect system:

[Regular conversation]

[Regular conversation]

[Regular conversation]

[Loyalty mission]

[Romance dialogue: Yes or No?]

[Yes: Flirting and then sex cutscene]

[No: I don't want to talk with you anymore]

[Same gender: I don't want to talk with you anymore]

I am in favor of more (and better composed) deep platonic friendship paths/dialogue trees across the board, including with otherwise romancable characters.  I... don't know what more I can offer this thread than that, but there you have it. :wizard:

I support friendships.....not everything has to revolve around sex and stuff :)

as a femshep, I felt more connected to Ash, and I wanted the same vibe for Miranda and Jack in ME2.....

ZAEED and GARRUS.

Come on especially Garrus with the male shep he has barely any friendship dialogue (or any dialogue at all really) besides his loyalty mission.

As for Zaeed they have to get his love interest active in a new quest for him. (Jesse)

Grunt is the definition of this. he's like an adorable puppy.

I love Wrex and Grunt in a very platonic way, in fact Grunt is like a little brother to me and Wrex is like a cool older brother. Garrus is also awesome as are Thane and Garrus.

I also consider Tali and Liara female friends, especially Tali of whom I'll protect like my own sister. I liked them but Ash is my woman, everyone else is just a friend as far as my version of Shepard was concerned.

This would probably be a great thread were it not created as a negative response to other posters.

I'd genuinely love it if we were able to take the friendships to a deeper level (dammit, that still sounds smutty) and be able to connect with the characters without 'girls club' style remarks coming up.

We need more bromance (and, erm, sismance Posted Image) dialogue and possibilities.

Samara.  I really liked the way the friendship developed between her and Shepard.  While my Shep did ask her if she ever felt like she wanted to fall in love again, she didn't mean it as a flirt...  She was just curious.  And I really liked Samara's answer: that she's lived long enough to know herself and to be comfortable with who she is and the oaths she's taken.  I really enjoyed being in the company of a mature character who did not need Shepard to change her or rescue her in any way.  Go Samara!

I seriously agree with you on this.  I felt really sad at being locked out of further friendship progression with Jack just because I was playing FemShep.  Also, it would have been nice to get some genuine, non-sexy sparring practice with Garrus!

Tali is my main Shepard's BFF. Been with her as long as Garrus, this Shep's a bit into tech so I can see them chatting about that and Tali trusts her enough she'd link suits XD so sweet

My Shep is also Earth Born and was a lot like Jack when she was young and in the gangs; lashing out at anyone who tried to get close, expecting betrayal. Because of that she's really drawn to Jack and wants to help her out in a kindred spirit kind of way.

Also since Earth Born Shep never knew her mother she's started seeing Samara as a kind of Mother-figure. She wishes she had a mother who was as awesome, wise and kind as Samara.

At first Jacob seemed like really good friend material but the way the game assumes you want to jump his bones kind of ruins that which made me sad. My Shep totally saw him as a bro
