I thought Aribeth was CREEPY AS F---.

That one sentence made my day.Posted Image

She WAS!  I don't know if NWN and NWN2 were actively trying to get me to hate the city of Neverwinter and its leadership, but I definitely did.  When 4E came out and I found out Neverwinter was cratered, my response was, "Good goddamn riddance."  In NWN1, Desther had OBVIOUSLY EVIL written all over him, Fenthick was most appropriately named given the idiot ball glued to his face, Aribeth sat around and twiddled her thumbs most righteously the whole damned time, and Nasher...oh...don't get me started on Nasher.  Between NWN1 and NWN2, I wanted the opportunity to assassinate him in his sleep.  With an irate, rabid badger as the vehicle of assassination.  And some vinegar.  And a rusty spork.

And god, Aribeth in HoTU pissed me off to no end.  I ended up killing her...again...because I couldn't stand recruiting her.  Or letting her continue to exist in any way, shape, or form.  Either you turn her good and she has righteousness shining out of every orifice like she did nothing wrong, AND MAKING MOVES ON VALEN TO TOP IT OFF, or she's utterly psychotic.  And picks on Valen.  No one touches Valen, understand?  NO TOUCHY.  B-TCH.

I don't have a problem with video games.  Everything I do in a video game is something I wouldn't do in the real world.  As long as I can kill of or send away any of the LI I don't want to interact with I'm fine with it.

And this is why I'm perfectly happy to muck about with extremely dangerous/problematic characters in video games.  Come to think of it, of all the fictional guys I've fangirled over, modded or otherwise, there are very very few I would even consider giving the time of day in real life.  I'd probably be friends with Garrus.  And I might romance Alistair; his doofy sense of humor is identical to my boyfriend's, which gave him an unfair advantage.  But IRL, I would not touch Zev, Bishop, Atton, Ozai, or even my favorite modded romance of Kivan with a ten foot pole.

I agree. I think there is a significant difference between a real world type romance and a *fantasy* romance. I like fantasy romances in my games. Especially since because it's a game, it's less risky to be *dangerous*Posted Image Posted Image

:D

I can't help it.  There are some things in certain BioWare games that really set me off.  The Carth Syndrome is one.  Neverwinter, Aribeth, and Nasher are others.  Though the nice thing about video games is that I can usually kill the people who ****** me off quite that much, one way or another.  I got to kill Aribeth TWICE.  I say that's an overall win

LOL!  Indeed, I looked at the dialogue files for Aribeth, and it does seem like she's stealing thunder from female PCs by trying to "comfort" Valen.  She definitely comes off to me like an author's pet character.  All the more reason I was glad I didn't take her with me.Posted Image

And who could forget how (in HotU) the PC, a complete stranger, can convince Aribeth to be good or evil just by talking to her?

Being a female gamer, I fell in love with Alistair. The first time I played DAO, I was a Dalish Rogue. At the end, when Alistair became king and told me we had to end our relationship, I was like "WHAT??? Oh no! ...Reload!" Because I was so emotionally attached to him, I couldn't just let him go like that. Even my husband teased me about loving Alistair more than him. So I think that Bioware really did a great job of the romantic build up with Alistair and the development of his character.

With Zevran, it was like, "Oh, sex? Sure." "More sex? Okay." "Hmm... Sex... Yawn..." I really didn't have that emotional attachment to Zevran. And Leliana was just too girly for my taste. Shoes, whoopty-do. You like my hair? Thanks... I guess...

One of the issues I had was that once Alistair was courted and in love, the conversations basically stopped until the very end before the battle. I need more substance than that! More emotion, more flirting... You know, he could flirt with my character when we got back to camp, have his own ideas about going to bed, rather than me initiating it all.

So when it comes to DA2, I hope that the characters will be so in-depth that I'll have that same emotional attachment to them. I want them to be more realistic, and if I'm in a relationship with them, I want them to behave accordingly.

I'm all for another goofy-sweet Alistair. I haven't played the other Bioware games, so I don't know what other romantic interests are like, but I wouldn't mind a relationship with Varric, Dwarves need love, too. And Varric is rogueishly handsome, for a dwarf.

Entering this thread, don't know what's going on, but...I think I'll just stick on topic. ._.
What style of character, you say? Well, personally, I'd be fine with anything...so long as it's not another "Oh, my wife died awhile back. Sob sob." situation. A dwarf romance option would be nice, since there wasn't one in Origins.(Don't give me that look. Dwarves need lovin' too.) Maybe a maleficar/apostate who's a bit of a womanizer and a philosopher. Or heck, maybe a rugged, yet somewhat elaborate rogue

All in all, I think it depends on the character's actually personality to me rather than pure aesthetics. I'd love a romantic interest with a surprisingly well written backstory.

I have to add that while I'd like a romance with a dwarf, there is no way in hell that I would ever fall for a dwarf like Oghren. He's nasty and putrid! I want an eloquent dwarf, like Gorim.

I'd agree that romances could use better pacing in that sense.  Alistair's romance did peter out after a while, although it's definitely better than past romances (for example, in Baldur's Gate 2, there is almost no romantic dialogue with Anomen once you're done sleeping with him).

Ok I have to say I would do this once because it would probably be HILARIOUS.

But I'm sure they'd make a dwarf LI much more suave and less....gross.

As for Nathaniel, I'm really happy that he's going to be in DA2 but I'm actually not all that interested in him as a LI for Hawke. I think they sort of missed a great opportunity for a romance between HNF and Nate, I mean all that conflict, history, overcoming a mutual hatred...It would have made for a really interesting relationship to watch develop. For Hawke, none of that would be there. But I don't think he's going to be romanceable in 2, anyway so I guess the point is moot.

Oh I would totally still romance him if it were possible, don't get me wrong. Nate is a pretty sexy beast. :D But it'd be much less interesting, and seeing as we're probably going to have a choice of 2 men to romance I think I might prefer a new character. Plus, there's that whole becoming a Grey Warden thing. That and the fact that he's killable makes me think he won't be an LI.

I think you are right that they missed out on an excellent opportunity, actually with nearly all of the Awakening characters. Since I am kind of new to Bioware games, Awakening proves for me that even with shorter stories, Bioware makes some extremely interesting characters, and that Origins wasn't unique in that feature. I haven't been crazy about most characters introduced in the Origins DLCs, but Awakening's characters are really good.

Although, where was my darkspawn companion? Posted Image

I liked that about Leliana. I slave for hours in the character creator and FINALLY an NPC notices Posted Image
but it was rather unfortunate that I chose the same hairstyle Lel has so I was like "Oh you're only saying that because YOUR hair is the same" Posted Image

What I didn't like about Alistair romance is that you don't get the "last night together" scene especially if you don't choose the DR. So there I was playing through the Denerim battle, last conversation with Alistair was a long time ago, I'm waiting for some grand love scene (or at least expecting Riordan to come through for us) until I got to the end and Alistair sacrificed himself Posted Image so I had to reload and do the DR

Of course--I like hearing what guys' opinions on their girls are, or even on what straight men they want to have romancable by their female PCs.

And there's always the option of creating another equivalent of this thread so you can let out your inner gush! ...Yeah, I know.
