As you're fleeing Ferelden, you arrive to the sea and watch it. You and Bethany both decide that you need to find safe passage across the sea but have no money for it and you're forced to run around a port to find a passage for cheap. You can talk to many people but none of them will offer cheap passage, always having ridiculous prices (and some asking for sexual favors from Bethany / Hawke for a cheaper price).
Once you check out the inn, a man is sitting at the corner and is drinking his rum while flirting with the bartender. A few mercs (including a Qunari for comparison) appear and threaten him saying he owes their boss some money for his ship, he breaks his drink and kills the men before apologizing to the bartender and walking out of the bar.
If you follow him, he's sitting there looking at the ocean with a smirk on his face. He introduces himself as a captain of a ship and looks at you two and makes advances but appears more level headed than the rest of the captains and pirates. Through talking with him further, either you or Bethany agree to his "demands" (because the other pirates were asking for gold + sex, he's just asking for sex) and he leads you to the boat.
When walking towards his boat, he hides behind crates and motions for you to do the same. He gazes at the boat and notices that some more thugs are ravaging the boat for supplies and his money, he pleads for your help and offers to give you free passage if you assist him (due to his crew being imprisoned on the boat, he can't ask for anybody else's help).
After you've dealt with the criminals and cross to the Free Marshes, you (or Bethany, depending on gender) are harassed by the crew and he (the guy) comes down and kills the crew involved and apologize to you both for the attitude of his crew.
You land on the Free Marshes, he asks you to visit somebody nearby that will help them out (he's coming along to "show" you the way) and the people he insisted on visiting give you the materials required to make a tent when outside in the wild (explaining the camp). Unfortunately, when occupied with this, thugs from the same gang in Ferelden heard of what you've done through the boasting of a few crew members who tried to charm some ladies and in the end the crew get killed and the ship is burned.
Ruined and with nothing left, he decides to head towards the town / area you're going with because he has nothing more to do. He introduces himself as somebody who's parents were pirates and he followed in their footsteps and that he doesn't know the world except for the sea, so you need to introduce him to the world as a whole and you see his character change over the years.
He mostly approves to violence and greed but disapproves to violence towards innocent people and working for lawful figures.

Oooh yeah. And you know, thinking about Beauty and the Beast a bit more, the only thing she can't do while she's captive is leave. His power over her is pretty negligible otherwise. So, maybe all you'd need to do is have the PC and the LI stuck together, kind of like how you really can't get rid of Alistair for most of Origins even if you hate him. Of course, there'd be nothing to make you actually talk to or use him but if you ignored him you probably wouldn't be too interested in pursuing that romance anyway.
Yes, but the power was there. I mean, he was holding her hostage, he was pretty damn threatening and scary when she entered the East Wing. If he did more to her than simply demand she stay, which was part of the bargain, his romance with her would have been unforgivable.

Oh I totally agree. But I wonder if the power aspect is what makes that sort of love story appealing. If you subdued or eliminated that aspect of it, could you preserve the essence enough to make it viable in a game? I think it might work.

Wow. Dave, I'm impressed. Of course, you'd have to find ways to work around being able to refuse sex as a reward (because I'm pretty sure offering up your sister's body might not fly too well), and things like that, but I like it.
Especially the last sentence--it's a nice change from the sweet an' charmin' main male love interest we're always presented. Of course, that's my favorite kind, but I would like to see something different.
How they handle his aggressive sexualness (in this proposed character of yours) I think would be very vital to liking him or not. With Zevran, it came off as too dirty to me, almost slimy. When I ignored that aspect, I liked him better. But his raunchiness wasn't handled the best way, in my opinion.

Not if it is a sacrifice to Cthulhu.
Also, good on Dave.

I didn't like writing that much either, although I needed to find some excuse on how to leave Fereldan without gold and got into the usual swashbuckler mindset.

To add, it's happened so many times. If it happened once or twice, I doubt I would have noticed. But there's a dead-something in just about every BioWare game. BGII, ME, ME2, DAO, JE, KOTOR, NWN and NWN: HotU. All of them. Some of them are more blatant and groan-worthy than others, but I think that's an overabundance, don't you?
Hmm, does Anomen's comparing you to his sister count if he did it before she was killed? Of course, you could still say it's odd or creepy to compare your prospective love interest to one of your relatives...

I'd have to say he sounds intriguing, but there would be 1 change that I would make, by your leave of course. Instead of trading sex for passage on his ship, I would want him to ask for gold or help on a side quest, because after all, if he's that suave and charming, he won't have to bargain for sex. Plus, I think my PC would injure him in inventive ways for even suggesting sex as payment. Other than that, he sounds like a chaotic/good type swashbuckler, which is always a fun character to interact with.
On a side note @ Dave, I thought I scared you away with my snarky idiocy. Glad to see you're still hangin' in there.
Edited for length.

My problem with the gold aspect is that I dislike very much when a game makes you collect gold early on to spend it all for quest progression, it happened in Fable 2 and such and it just seems to bother me. Especially when the sum isn't trivial and you'd rather keep it.
I had intially decided to write that you helped him fight the crime lord that he owes money to and he gives you safe passage off but I wanted to leave that more open for future use (such as when the boat is burned down) and threw in the sex thing to make him appear more edgy and make it clear he's a pirate at heart (but it's not something I liked writing down to be honest)

No--I honestly believe that if both parties are adults, there's nothing "wrong," it's a matter of what they're comfortable with.

I would explain as something similar to a Beauty and the Beast romance. He's a big, mean, nasty dude but She softens his bitter exterior him through a long, angsty, drama-licious journey. Like phaonica said, it's a trope. Not my favorite, but to each their own.
Generally I think no one likes things to be reduced to trope-status, as if they're all somehow bad, but like I said before, they wouldn't be tropes if they weren't fun and entertaining to a lot of people. Alistair's, Morrigan's, Zevran's, and Leliana's romances are a collection of romance tropes too. Doesn't mean they are shallow, it means that they have broader appeal, which is necessary when you're talking about limited game resources.
I'm a dead sucker for the bad boy trope. Yes yes yes yes, it's been done a million times and is totally manipulative of my primitive desire to chase danger, but aw hell. I can't help it. They're just so gosh darn cute.
Everyone is going to have different opinions about which tropes these romances fall into. I can only speak for myself. For me, I felt like Loghain was a good person who effed up really bad. He was kind of a jerk at the Landsmeet, but he also considered me to be his enemy, so that made sense. He was actually kind of a jerk in The Stolen Throne and in my party camp, too, but I see it in a Tsundere or a JerkWithAHeartOfGold way. He does have a gentlemanly side and when he no longer sees you as an enemy, I think he's a likable person. Obvously, though, it depends on if you are playing a character who agrees with reasons to give him a second chance. It doesn't necessarily mean you agree with his actions, it just means that, for whatever your reasons, you are willing to let him try again.

well yeah but in defense of his character, it was the pc who brought it up (accidently)
i think it was just there to be something fun, like a flirt. if you think about it, the romances in HotU aren't really fleshed out in comparison to other, more current romances. i mean the only thing that really 'haunts' valen was his fear of losing his humanity again - he has more or less come to peace with every other awful thing that has happened to him (if not then those possibilities weren't explored, as you said)
IIRC the HotU dialogues were, for the most part, the same for all characters, but a few were options for members of the opposite gender only ("romance dialogues"). "Have you ever been in love?" was the romance dialogue for that particular conversation.

What if I RP'd Revan as being a fourteen year old that dressed up as a republic soldier for a play on the ship before the Sith attacked?
