Give the ladies a fair shake. That means plenty of raging lesbians and a few guys like Sten.

Why can't it be two guys competing for *my* affections? ;)

I'm always open to new possibilities. As long as it makes for a good, compelling story I won't rule anything out, but managing the feelings of an unknown party (the player) in a love triangle is probably difficult. By that I mean, making sure the competition remains appealing and doesn't turn you off the LI(s) entirely.

This could be interesting.  I can think of a couple of routs, the good and evil compete for my affections, depending on my alignment I could go with the one I find attractive, but that would sort of have to happen towards the beginning I would think, before the two LI choices realize which path the character is headed.
I'm not sure I would enjoy it a lot.  For the same reason I wouldn't fight for a man but it would depend on how they did it.

I think a good example of the love triangle with competing love interests is the antagonistic relationship between Casavir and Bishop in NWN2.  While the PC can't romance Bishop (unless modded), I still found it extremely entertaining to listen to them try to one-up the other and have the PC fit into their rivalry.  Plus, the dialogue between the two, and interaction with the PC, would differ depending on influence points.  I wouldn't be one to complain if I saw this sort of thing again.

I liked that part too in NWN2 but honestly I think that was only because I found Casavir so awfully boring. If he been any interesting at all Bishop might have seemed more annoying with his constant snide coments then amusing. Not sure if it would be possible to create a good romance conflict like that where both parts are equally interesting without making one into the victim for abuse by the other? Posted Image

I want a bad boy... Nathaniel-ish
And I want a little bit of a chase, maybe compete for him with my sister. It's kind of boring when your the center of the attention all the time.
Or someone older that's more like Alistair's original design...
I don't want to have to choose between a virgin and a sdm guy again. As much as I love Leliana I would like a man this time around.
(Unless one of the new girls has a voice as sultry as Corinne Kempa's....)

Decided to rewrite the character, Pirate romance take 2!

I'll just mention that I liked a lot of the concepts you wrote about.  I agree that you could definitely make an interesting mod based on that story, if you wanted.

Just for extra romance potential, you could push him and Bethany to get together.

Booooo! BOOOOOO! God, I hate LI-NPC romances.

But.. you'd rather want your sister to be single? :(

1)  Being single isn't some horrible fate--some people actually prefer it.

2)  Just because she doesn't hook up with an NPC in the game doesn't mean she'd be single forever.

Honestly, I don't get angry sex at all, I've done it and felt like crap afterwards... maybe it is because I'm older and stable now, but I can honestly say that all my relationships in which there was angry sex occurring were fundamentally flawed and bad for one (or both) of us on some (if not all) levels.

Maybe it is just my inner prude showing again, but to me angry sex is just a few steps away from sex being a power struggle rather than an expression of love.

You know what I hate?

"Oh, they're attractive males and females and look how much they despise each other, they must really be sexually attracted and are about to have glorious hatesex!"

...I really don't like when Morrigan/Alistair are shipped together.

Yeah, I kinda hate that too.  Especially since there's no evidence in the game that Morrigan and Alistair are the least bit attracted to each other.

1) True, yet the cast that follows you through the game will for some reason always remain single. I can understand it in terms of say.. DA:O where it's a year or so, yet DA2 will be taking ten years and if there's no NPC relationship forming up then it'll feel weird. I just threw in that option because Bethany would be able to have a romance if you didn't care much for the pirate as YOUR romance or if you're a male and you want to be a big brother figure. "If you harm her, I swear I'll kill you."

2) True.

I agree that ten years is a long, long time to be without any relationship. The devs have already said the party will have lives of their own, so I wouldn't be surprised if this eventually includes marriage and kids.

It'll be really interesting to see how they handle romance.

Good point, about the time-span of this particular game.  It's something to keep in mind.

There was a trilogy of NWN2 mods called 'Dark Waters', which handled a love interest for a companion rather well, I thought. First, the PC got to choose which companion to begin a relationship with. Then, after that relationship had progressed to a certain point, the 'unchosen' companion had a random encounter with someone on your travels (in this case a ship's captain visiting an inn). There was a short cutscene where the two got chatting, and then he (captain) asked my companion out on a date. From then on, there were various points in the game where the companion would receive a message from her lover, or whenever we crossed paths on the high seas she would ask permission to go aboard his ship for a bit. She would return a short while later with either a gift - at one point a necklace (amulet of protection), another time a dress (magical mage robes) - or the odd quest (she wants to get him a present, he's in a spot of bother - the usual!).

Having the companion's LI as a non party member unavailable as a romance to the PC would solve any competition issues, and also prevent any romantic party convos in which the PC doesn't play a part. It'd be less disruptive to the group in general, but would also give a sense of the NPC having a life of their own, somewhere to go and someone to visit when in camp or not an active member of the party. It would also be interesting to have them return from visits with presents/quests, or even just some kind of 'good mood' effect for a while (like moodlets in the Sims, I s'pose, heh).

But that sort of makes it so you have to pick a love interest in the beginning--what if you don't want to? DAO had the possibilty of starting up to three seperate relationship all at different times: you could start with Alistair, then start with Zevran and then end with Alistair when you found out he's a Theirin. You could stay with Zevran and then start with Leliana as she gets more flirty, and then end it with her because you ultimately love Zevran or something to that effect.

I just wouldn't want to be pigeonholed into being only for one LI for an entire ten years (or whenever the romance becomes available).

Well, I was more thinking in relation to Bethany, or other non-romanceables as far as DA2 is concerned (sorry, should probably have made that clear!), since there is no LI angle for the PC at all. But anyway, who's to say that an NPC relationship is going to stay the distance for ten years? Maybe they're just having a few dates ...

Dunno, it's just that if our party members are going to be presented as independent individuals with lives of their own, it would seem .. odd .. if that didn't include a sex life to some degree. And as much as I don't want to compete for the affections of an LI, I'm also not sure how I feel about my various options sort of waiting around for me to make up my mind. I certainly wouldn't want them to fall in love with anyone else, but a fling or two while I make up my mind wouldn't hurt.

Edited to elucidate and apologise!

I don't necessarily want Sten's personality, but have you read this thread? Interest in qunari has only heightened with their new, muscle-bound, behorned look.

Isn't all Qunari like that though? I remember ther merchant in Awakening wasn't much better. I admit their look is rather appealing however their personalities are not. Remember that conversation with Sten when he mention our warden couldn't be a women because all warriors where men and in the end he ask why a women would want to be a man? Not exactly the sort of flirts I want with a LI.  ^_^

I think it's most certainly possible to do a qunari who's a follower of the Qun and have a different personality than Sten's. Of course, if he falls in love that obviously tests the "Qun" part.

I do actually want to see a qunari love interest though, with their set of ideals--it just seems like it would be really interesting, to me.

It would be. Unfortunately with what Mr. Gaider and Mary revealed about the Qunari, it would be extremely unlikely without the love interest being Tal-Vashoth. The Qun doesn't seem to allow romance.

I think this would be a great idea, especially, as others have mentioned, it's a 10 year span.

Well I do hope they give us a variety of choices, because, really, I find nothing about them attractive.  Interesting maybe, to talk to and befriend, maybe, but the writers will have to make a truly remarkable character for me to consider them as as a LI.   Muscle bound guys have never been at the top of my "looking good" list.

Definitely :wizard: Though my German is rubbish (sorry) and Google translate had some trouble with the last bit, here it is in English (sort of):

I hope that the romances are more demanding. A man, handsome, caring type something and something macho. But he is right with Nich go to the camp fire me if I make him some presents one. That would be great.
