Since the DA:O boys both had senses of humor (a trait I love) and were generally light-hearted, I'd like something different in DA2.
1) A very introverted, stoic warrior with a dash of angst. He's the silent type who sets himself apart from the group, but when he offers his advice it's always insightful, and when the PC gets to know him you uncover a very soft and squishy inside. AKA Nathaniel Howe from DA:A, really.
2) A self-serving, cocky, brash ****hole. NOT Morrigan with a peen. Think Eric from True Blood. The PC can work her/his way under his skin over the course of the romance, and he'll become extremely protective as a sign of his affection, probably never saying his feelings in words.
Physically, I want brunettes/dark hair since DA:O was blonde overload.
Also, any race but a dwarf (for these particular character types, I mean).
[Edited to add:]
3) Garrus Vakarian. That is all.
Haha. Agreed on Garrus, but if you take Garrus with you on missions, he does in fact have a pretty win sense of humor. He's also one of the few characters who gives Shepard sass. I loved it. And him

I agree that I'd like to see different styles of characters, but generally, angst is not something that sits well with me in video games. I'd like to point out that angst and character issues can be distinct. Maybe it's because I've played too many BioWare games, but in 99.9% of cases, whatever issues the main character's got going on are far far worse than anything any NPC can angst about. For example, in Baldur's Gate 2:
PC: I've been kidnapped, tortured, set upon by shadowy assassins, seen my foster father murdered, traumatized by my own brother, and dumped in some random-ass city filled with thieves and evil wizards. I've just found out I'm the hellspawn of an evil dead god. Oh, my creepy not-sister and I just got our souls sucked out through a soda straw, and I've turned into some freaky hellbeast due to TEH EVILZ.
Anomen: WAH DADDY ISSUES
Aerie: WAH MY WINGS
Viconia: WAH MY GENERAL B*TCHINESS
Jaheira: WAH MY HUSBAND
PC: ...I hate you all.
Or for a more recent example, in ME2:
Shep: So I've been killed, fought over as a DEAD BODY, returned to life by a terrorist organization, and kicked out the door on my merry way. And brain-raped by Prothean beacons. And potentially grew up in a gang, watched everyone around me get killed, KILLED EVERYONE AROUND ME, etc. WHOA.
Thane: So about my dead wife and estranged son issues--
Miranda, Jacob, Samara, Tali: And our family issues!
Garrus, Zaeed, Jack: OUR REVENGE ISSUES TOO!
Shep: I KEEEL YOU ALL DEAD. NAO.
...you get my point. I feel BioWare's gotten better about this in recent games, managing character development with limited wangst, but angst just sets off fifteen red flags for me. I approach RPGs from both the perspective of the PC and my perspective as her limited storyteller, and sometimes even though the PC might sympathize with angst, I usually find it difficult.
