Making the cooldown unavailable for spells will only make mages more powerfull than they are.Let me cast you 10 fireballs
in a few seconds, and i'm sure you won't agree.

Because warrior and rogues have to wait shortly between two hits (time to be able to prepare another attack), and longer delay if we talk about special attacks , the cooldown must be keep, it forces variety to cast different spell, so it's kind of strategic. With a cooldown process, you must draw a plan in your choice of spell to cast.Do you think it would be funny to only use the same spell everytime. Not only it will destroy the strategic use of magic, but also mages will be stronger than they are in DA:O

so you want an "I win button"

Why does it bother you how I play the game? I play on easy and I like playing RPGs like I read in fantasy and stories being powerfull and awesome. It's now awesome if I'm getting killed a lot. It makes the game more fun if I'm going around stomping everything

I said I was biased, but I never said I wanted an I Win button.

Everyyone do not play the game in the same way.So don't ask for a rush style, cause it feets you.
And with cooldown, you still kill the same amont of foes, the number of foes does not vary,it's just the delay you manage to do it.And DA is not a "monster/door/chest" game

Well I need challenge to have fun. Otherwise it stops being fun and becomes boring and a chore if I don't have to exercise my brain a bit. There is no feeling of achievement or badassry from an 'I win' spell. Anyone can do that. We might as well watch a movie.

If by casual you mean plays the game to enjoy the story and role-playing a character and doesn't need fake difficulty to have fun doing it, then yes.

there's a middle ground between an easy game and one that kills you 500 times by spamming hordes of enemies using cheap tactics. That middle ground is where any game must stand, so it allows you to enjoy the story and feels rewarding in the combat parts.

no matter how much you enjoy the story and the build up to the last fight, you'll enjoy the game much more if it takes 8 minutes to beat the archdemon than killing it with a single fireball.

True, but that "sweet spot" is different for different people.

I'm sorry. I want to respond to this, but all I can think about is how awesome that would be.

To the original question: just increase the mana cost of spells, and decrease staff damage - or take out all staff damage. This will make us stack willpower instead of magic - making our spells less powerful. The other way is to make armor more important, as rogues/warriors would become much harder to kill. Of course, you would need to reduce the power of Arcane Warrior spells so they aren't incredibly powerful AND hard to kill

I think magic should be overpowered, but it should also require finesse. The mage should have to make tactical decisions about which spell to use in a situation. I especially want to see mage vs mage combat made more like a chess game or martial arts battle, with spells and counter-spells forming a tactical game of wits.

the people who sucks balls playing rpgs will always demand less difficulty
the people who plays solo on nightmare mode will always demand more difficulty
the game who uses cheap tactics and fake difficulty will be annoying for everybody

the player with an average skill, like the 90% of us, can fit in a somewhat small sweet spot, so the difficulty can be tailored for most of us, since most of opinions tend to qualify DAO as an easy game

then why use tons of skills and talents if the fun is to one-shot kill everything?

It seems to me, that this thread is really not so much about magic, but rather, difficulty levels.

I've seen no reason to think that there won't be difficulty levels and we'll all be forced to play at a difficulty called "Nightmare is for crybabies" which leads me to believe we'll still be able to play at whatever difficulty level we choose...

I think maybe I'll attempt to frustrate all of you by playing at different difficulty levels at random throughout the entire game.

And none of you can do anything about it.

<insert evil laugh here>

I really had no problem with the magic in DA:O. Like Riona, however, I'm biased since I always play mages. That being said, I've played them through a large variety of situations and I honestly never felt overpowered. Yes, I could shoot flaming death out of my staff, but cooldowns, mana costs, friendly fire, resistances, enemy positioning, lack of armor, lack of defense, lack of copious life, fear of too much aggro directed at me, and the number of spells one could learn all limited me in a way that made me feel like my power was more than made up for. Against one enemy? Sure, I was a god. Against the majority of encounters in the game? I was glad I had Wynne, Zevran, and Alistair backing me up cuz I would have been dead (maybe not every time, but a lot). And just so you know, I always play on normal difficulty and I've never patched my game.

I also agree with the points about the lore. Though I agree that this is a video game and gameplay is important, it would make absolutely no sense for magic to NOT be powerful.  But it isn't as if I can hurl unlimited fireballs.  I do, however, think that the Arcane Warrior specialization sounds too powerful.  I've never used it myself, but it just seems to bypass the biggest weaknesses of the mage and totally unbalance mages thereby.  Maybe if you could use the weapons  but not armor?Posted ImagePosted Image

Doesn't matter. As long as it's fun. Difficult is not fun. Life is difficult as is is, and challenging. I for one want easy games. For relaxation.

P.S. DAO and Awakening was just my cup of tea.

Bulls**t. I was playing as a warrior always, and i didn't wanted to be a mage ever.
If there werent that many paralizing spells, a warrior or rogue could easily bring down a mage.:bandit:
