I really had no problem with the magic in DA:O. Like Riona, however, I'm biased since I always play mages. That being said, I've played them through a large variety of situations and I honestly never felt overpowered. Yes, I could shoot flaming death out of my staff, but cooldowns, mana costs, friendly fire, resistances, enemy positioning, lack of armor, lack of defense, lack of copious life, fear of too much aggro directed at me, and the number of spells one could learn all limited me in a way that made me feel like my power was more than made up for. Against one enemy? Sure, I was a god. Against the majority of encounters in the game? I was glad I had Wynne, Zevran, and Alistair backing me up cuz I would have been dead (maybe not every time, but a lot). And just so you know, I always play on normal difficulty and I've never patched my game.

I also agree with the points about the lore. Though I agree that this is a video game and gameplay is important, it would make absolutely no sense for magic to NOT be powerful.  But it isn't as if I can hurl unlimited fireballs.  I do, however, think that the Arcane Warrior specialization sounds too powerful.  I've never used it myself, but it just seems to bypass the biggest weaknesses of the mage and totally unbalance mages thereby.  Maybe if you could use the weapons  but not armor?Posted ImagePosted Image
