Wow that was off topic for a while.

Sorry if I threw the conversation into the gutter for a bit.

The EU doesn't have dwarves yet?

I think I need to sleep, as I first thought you were asking if there were any Dwarves in the European Union.

There is one actually

Literacy in Orzammar...

I mean apart from the scholars in the Shaperate is there any interest in literature etc in Orz or would that be considered a bit effeminate...

I guess literacy amongst the dusters is virtually non-existent... But what about the nobility, dwarves seem to be more about fighting and practical skills than reading...  Dagna of course being an exception...

The scholar in the DN origin enjoys King Endrin's favour.  I think Gorim says that his work about the paragons is widely popular in the nobility

As far as the dusters go, Rica wrote a letter to Bhelen.

yep to the above. Also it would be in a different language (imo) to what humans/elves know, I went with a runeish language as, well, seems more dwarva.

I would say they use both THEIR language and the common language, with scribes ordered to translate from one to the other.

Given the tradition vs change stuff, it would fit if Dwarven runes were traditional and still official, but human script was gradually taking over in unofficial usage - particularly among the merchant caste who deal with surfacers frequently, but elsewhere too because it's more convenient and quicker for use with paper and ink

All cool. I sorta guessed the educated ones would be bilingual. Many thanks, so Rica wrote to Bhelen? Also useful.

Thanks, Wulfram, Raonar & Soignee...

Rica apparently teaches her sibling to read. I believe she learns it from Beraht as part of her training as a noble-hunter. The whole point of that is to make her resemble a noble lady enough to keep the noble interested (after all, if he could go with a random duster or a random refined duster, who is he going to pick?). I think literacy would probably important for merchants as well, particularly when trading with the surface. Being able to keep track of finances on paper is more practical than counting the money every time or trying to remember what you have.

Ah, I was going to ask whether noble hunters were literate... It seemed to me in the manner of geishas and other courtesans that they should be... Nothing better to fall back on than storytelling when other things fail/are over... Before TV and the internet, of course...

Well, there you go, all in one place...

When things fail/are over they are just dusters that can read. There is no qualified work for them, and what duster affords paying a story-teller?

How would a Shaper refer to Oghren: the GW Oghren, late of house Branka?

One hopes that dusters that can read will have more tales to tell and be more aware of certain things...

PS I think it was Henry Miller who said: "The dumber the girl, the dumber the f***" :P

I doubt it. Grey Wardens typically don't live in Orzammar but they technically keep their caste and name. If Oghren was considered of House Branka instead of house Kondrat then he would still be Oghren Branka. I'm not sure if he IS considered a part of Branka's house as she can put in or take out whoever she wants and she may very well have removed him when she left.

And when it comes to NH's 'being over' I don't know what you mean. If they never get pregnant or have daughters(or, like with Mardy, has a son by a man who is considered casteless by the time the baby is born) then they'd fail but as long as their son is alive then they would be a part of the house.

Thanks Sarah.

As for being over I mean "the act" ie tell him a good story once he's come...

My Dwarf Commoner character, "Mistake".
He got the name because his mother, A noble's daughter got one day rather tipsy and ended up with a castless. She got pregenant and was disowned by her family and tossed away to dust town, going about her days simply drinking and getting money for alcohol. He was her mistake and thus since she would call him that as he grew up he had it as a name.

Damn, I'd hate to have her as a mom. Imagine what kind of bullying "Mistake" went through. What does he think of his name?

I would hate to be called Mistake.

My second DC is called Bob though so that would also suck.

It was an unimaginative day.

Considering he's a castless he's kind of used to being treated like crap and as such he simply views his name, Mistake, as simply his name.

Man, that sucks for him. I would have a huge chip on his shoulder towards my mom and the nobles if I was in his situation. Will he be glad to leave Dust Town and become a GW?

Well he's got a large protective side towards his sister and had so since she was little, He's the one who's made sure her name is Rica and not..something worse from her mom, by continuingly calling her Rica.

So Duncan kind of had to drag him out of there.

The mother does have a bleak outlook on life, so I can see her blaming her children for her problems.

My DC however was eager to get out of Orzammar since Beraht was sent to the stone and realized he had to get out before someone in the carta retaliated for killing their boss/ or being executed by the nobles for "tarnishing" the Provings.
