Further on in The Stolen Throne (the end of chapter 15) we get this:

" 'Do you speak the King's Tongue?' Maric asked, making certain to pronounce each syllable carefully.
...
'Who do you think taught it to you surfacers?' he growled. The accent was thick, but very understandable."

Hm...does this mean that Ferelden was some form of the dwarven language and that's why they have the same language if not necessarily system of writing?

Old post but... new info from god.

David Gaider wrote...

Is the common tongue English due to Andraste talking it (and the chant being in English)?

Heh, no. The common tongue actually comes from the dwarves. They introduced trade and currency to humanity.

Then why don't humans speak the old dwarven language? Did they invent a new language to trade with humans?

No,
they invented a new language to trade with each other. There isn't any
one "dwarven" language, though humans like to think of it that way
because of the old kingdoms only Orzammar is left.

Just an interesting discussion in the DA2 forum about what percentage of players may have played the dwarven origins (estimate is pretty low -- dwarves are the least popular). There's no hard and fast data, but it's always nice to see people come out of the woodwork and say they liked the dwarven origins for what it was worth.

So the dwarves brought civilization to the world?

Naturally, I am unsurprised. What else could you expect from the master race?

Man, I still have no idea -at all- what these people are talking about when they go off on dwarves being ugly or overweight. Not to mention the people who refuse to play dwarves because they are -short-, which is like refusing to play elves because they have pointed ears and not because they are prancing nancies.

It's really sad since consensus seems to agree with us that the dwarf origins had some of the best writing and plot in the game. I sort of get the feeling that dwarf PC options may not reappear later in the Dragon Age franchise. (Gaider is being very vague on that point, it appears).

Not sure if I should bother posting this but here goes...

As someone who has openly gone on the record about NOT liking to play as a dwarf (love dwarven culture, but hate to play as one), I don't get why dwarf fans seem to get upset at those of us who don't like to play as one.

Is it so wrong that I don't like to play the game as a dwarf because I don't feel comfortable playing as one? Because I really don't feel comfortable playing one.

I have played both dwarf origins (and I did take my DN from the origin straight into Awakening, RPing that she was sent to Orlais instead and became commander in there), and I find them to be very interesting and on par with all the other origins (though the DC is my least favorite origin overall, while the DN would be third). I love dwarven culture, and Orzammar happens to be my favorite portion of the game.

But... I just don't like to play as a dwarf. Is it because of the height? No, it's mostly because of the proportions that Bioware gave them. They are just... odd. At least that's how *I* feel about it.

Considering how some people also don't like to play as a human (because they find it mundane), or how other hate playing as elves because they find them too frail (or prancing nancies as stated above), I don't see the big deal about some people not liking to play as dwarves.

For the record, I DO think it's a shame that you can't play as a dwarf in DA2, because I always advocate for variety and for there to be options to satisfy everybody.

Well if dwarf-lovers are such a minority that it might affect whether we'll get to play dwarves in the future then that is reason to get a little annoyed.

Sure, but that's hardly a reason for me to want to play as a dwarf. I get that you guys are sad that dwarves aren't more popular, but that doesn't mean you should get annoyed at those who don't like to play as dwarves. It would be like me getting annoyed that s/s romances weren't more popular or something similar. It's just a matter of personal preference. As I said, I do wish that dwarves were a playable race in DA2, for the sake of those who do like them.

Eh, I should just go. I think I'm just going to make people angry in here.

I'm not annoyed at anyone, and certainly not for daring to have a personal preference that differs from my own. I just find myself somewhat bemused at the reasons that crop up over and over for these differing opinions. It's always the same two or three reasons, and I just don't see them as having much substance. This does not mean I am demeaning the people who give these reasons to validate their opinions.

I do find myself a bit irked at the thought that dwarves may not be playable in future DA titles, but that annoyance is not directed at the people who do not like playing dwarves. It is at the situation itself.

No one has to like dwarves. The point of frustration comes when people not wanting to play as a dwarf for whatever reason removes the option for those who do. You can choose not to play as a dwarf, but our choice to play what we prefer might not be there in the future (it already isn't there, but I accept Hawke being a human character the same way I accept Shepard being a human character). The majority that is most often catered to should not act defensive when nothing is being taken from them, in my opinion.

Alright, I get it now.

Hopefully there will be playable dwarves in DA3. Gaider did make it sound as if they will at least consider it. As I said, variety is good.

EDIT:

@Yuki

I only acted defensive for what I perceived as an annoyance at people not wanting to play a particular race.

I don't have an annoyance AT specific people for not wanting to play it but an annoyance that so many people apparently don't want to that it's affecting future games.

Not a big fan of the guy, but maybe Varric can change that attitude.

Doesn't bother me that other people don't like playing dwarves. I get it -- I'm not a fan of elves personally, but I like watching others be passionate about elves -- I live through them instead. Dwarves are an acquired taste really. =p

It only doesn't make sense to me when someone goes out of their way to discourage dwarf stuff. There have been several incident in most of the romance threads where a few posters would express disgust at the thought of their preferred LI with a dwarf. I've seen the occassional groan when Alistair + dwarf romance shots were shared. The vast majority of posters welcome those shots because we are sharing our enjoyment of the game, but there are still those who pout when dwarves get discussed at all. (When it has nothing to do with the thread, it's one thing, but when it's specifically tied into a love interest, it's another.) Not a big deal either way -- been playing dwarves for years if the option was available. I just like hearing people say, "Hey, I'm not really a dwarf person, but I enjoyed the story. The culture was cool." ;)

Aaaanyway, here's a fun dwarf story for me to share since it's kinda related to the discussion about attitudes towards dwarves. About four or five years ago, in the early days of PvPing on WoW, we could only pvp against the horde on our server. I was the only dwarf that actively pvped at the time and ran with the same crew over and over. I noticed that every time we were put into a match against the same horde team, their troll leader went for me first thing every time. Blew me a kiss or sometimes did a /love emote. Every time. I got mad, thinking that he was picking on me because I was an easy kill as a cloth-wearing priest and he was being patronizing with his emotes. I would see his crew coming and make sure I was somewhere else on the other side of the field, but I actually watched him break from his pack specifically to pursue me before he would continue to cap the flag for their team. You can see how I felt picked on. Well, one day, someone from his crew saw me hanging around in a city and said hi. We talked about it and misconeptions were cleared up. Turned out the troll absolutely loved dwarf females. I was his favorite. Hence the emotes and ... of course, the deaths. He was being affectionate.

:P

Varric does look awesome. I also love his crossbow. I hope crossbows are actually useful in DA2.

Bioware Blog has a post on lore info for each race in DA2, including dwarves. It talks about the hierarchy of surface dwarves and the clans they're divided into. I realize this is the DAO forum so if you don't want to be spoiled on DA2, I suggest you skip the link.

I have a question for the assembled dwarven scholars. Do the dwarves have ready access to cheese, or is it an imported luxury?

Codex:
"This hulking beast (Bronto) was originally bred by the dwarven Shaperate as a beast of burden and food source, the rough equivalent to surface oxen and cows."

I suspect they could produce cheese from Brontos.

me too. I think it just missed the really scowly shot though, I was trying. :)  and her name is Baonna. :)  it's actually more of a Hobbit name (I've used it one Lord of the Rings online before), but I thought it fit her too.

*good insight into likes/dislikes and acceptance, and awesome story about Troll crush on dwarf*

That is a really awesome post, and I really loved the story. I'm checking out the DA2 thread that was linked here, too, and I intend to pronounce my love of playing dwarf characters, of course without bashing anyone else.

My personal story was that my first playthrough ever was with a male City Elf, which I treated as the character "most like me", and therefore one of my 3 canon playthroughs (used to be 4 but discovering a major glitch in Awakening had me delete and disown the 4th Warden). My 2nd canon playthrough I always planned would be female Dwarf Noble, and because I learned so much about Dwarven culture (and how different it is in Dragon Age from other fantasy franchises), and of Bhelen's motivations, I was hooked both on Bhelen's vision and of dwarven culture and society, and since then my favorite playthroughs have been dwarves. I'm going to make another "me" playthrough as a retcon to my City Elf (though I will keep that character), this time as a commoner (since I've had a rough upbringing myself), and I'm going to make all the choices I felt right that I didn't make with my first playthrough.

and hopefully Dwarf PCs will be available in future Dragon Age games.
