I must necro this thread, for I enjoy Dwarf-related threads!

Question for the PC people: What Dwarf-related mods are out there, if any? As in armor, weapons, etc.

I will be getting the PC UE version of DAO soon -- a few days tops -- and will download the toolset. I'll promptly begin my study of it so that I can create my own mods, but I would like to know what Dwarf-related mods are already out there.

(Seriously? What about Gherlon the Blood-Risen that Rica tells you about in the DC origin? Was she just making him up?)

Doubtful, considering there's a mountain stretch of road called Gherlen's Pass. While there's a slight difference in how the names are spelled, I highly doubt that they are two completely different people.

That would just be absurd for us to hear about a casteless Dwarf who became Paragon -- and king -- and then have some other person with a similar name getting his own stretch of road.

Plus, it makes a lot of sense for the Casteless to know about someone who was as reviled in Dwarven society as they were only to return to that same place and show them that he's just as much of a badass as anyone else.

That is a major reason, yes. No trade means no money to finance its war.

"With far fewer resources than Orzammar and no access to the surface,
Kal-Sharok has had to do some very questionable things to survive, and
now they are changed forever. "

If you had to venture a guess, what would you say are the "questionable things" that Kal-Sharok had to resort to? I honestly can't think of anything, except for maybe cannibalism on their fellow Dwarves.

Don't ask me why I thought of that, but it was the only thought that really made sense for me.

EDIT: Seems I wasn't the only one that thought of cannibalism. That makes me feel better.

As another edit to this post, I associate a soundtrack song from FFXII to my particular Dwarf Noble Xanthos Aeducan.

It may not seem to fit with the setting of DA to some people -- to me it does, but I don't know how other people might see it -- but when I listen to it it definitely makes me think of what Xanthos Aeducan embodies for Orzammar's society and future.

Also, it sounds awesome. Image IPB

There's a mod to fix the lady dwarves' proportions, and a related one that changes the female light armors to look like the male ones (but with a lady in them). I think that's the only dwarf-specific one I use.

There you are! I knew your handle started with tmp but couldn't remember the numbers.

Heh, I just wanted to be clear that it wasn't a quick swap for an actual male torso. And thank you *so* much for the light armor mods. My Dalish elf, and her abdomen, in particular thank you. :)

I'm definitely going to download that first one. The arms were just very.... off-putting when playing on console. I can't recall if Sigrun suffered from the gorilla-arms problem in Awakening. I don't think she did, but if she did then it was something I never paid much attention to.

Probably because she's so adorable Image IPB.

Do you happen to know the name of those mods? Links? Actually though I like the dwarf female appearance and armor, so I'm wondering about the "fixes." Dwarves that aren't stocky are halflings, maybe gnomes. Still now I can't help wondering if I'm missing out on something

Just makes the arms shorter, nothing more really. I like improved atmosphere cause it has a badass set of armor.

tmp7704 wrote the dwarven lady proportion fix (as well as fixes for the other female races), so if you click on their name (a bit higher up on this page), and then look at their projects, you should be able to find what you're looking for.

Don't see the armor mod I'm using anymore! The 'rogue armor' mod is kind of close, though. And some of the DA2-inspired light armors look fun *and* cover your bosom and belly.

So when I get my PC edition of DAO UE and the toolset, I'm going to begin modding -- as I said earlier.

It's going to be Dwarven related obviously -- more Deep Roads stuff and political stuff for Orzammar -- and it's basically add-on campaigns for the Warden/fixing the thing about DAO I despise the most.

Would anyone like to help me in this endeavor? I'll be a noob at the toolset modding, so I could probably use as much help as possible to properly code or do other things (testing, environments, etc.)

I'm in the story planning process of what I would mod everything to do.

How complicated is the toolset to use actually?

The toolset -- I have a love/hate relationship with it. It's buggy and has annoying limitations, but at the same time, it's an incredibly robust tool. There is a learning curve to using it, but it actually is not so difficult once you play around with it a bit. If you have experience with programming or with modern database packages, you'll have an easier time with it. There are some terrific tutorials out there as well.

There are very few add-on campaigns (I can think of one, but there may be another one or two) for DAO because it is an insane amount of work making them.

If you mean the light armours matching appearance of male version, they are optional downloads in the proportion fix mods, listed as "unisex" files. I use them too much myself to just remove them Image IPB

Hey, thanks for the links- lots more in the tmp7704 list! It doesn't look like your DAO chars use the proportion fix though, no? (EDIT: Just not your first dwarf... I see it in Sereda.) I found this char of Verly's named Veylya (hopefully not too snoopy to go DAO char exploring or mentioning others' chars) who clearly is using a mod to change her dwarf's appearance, though it may not be tmp7704's given the longer arms- looks like a cute, short human, maybe a halfling... nearly all the dwarfiness removed other than maybe a subtle remainder in the hips and the large, round head...
:?

I'm too used to my own dwarf girl's appearance to change it now... Maybe in the next go-'round...

EDIT: Just checked out the gallery at the mod itself... definitely not a subtle remainder in the hips! hehehe Definitely will be trying it next time... I also might try out the elf and human proportions fixes...

Quite the surprise to get email notifications that there was activity in this thread again! I have not played DAO since before DA2 came out so my info is obviously limited, but I checked my old folders to see what I used. Back then, there wasn't much that specifically catered to dwarves apart from tmp's awesome work on dwarf proportions and unisex armor and tucked hairstyles. (Seriously, tmp, you increased my enjoyment of the game a thousand-fold!) If you play a female dwarf that romances Alistair, grab "mild romance scenes" from tmp as well because it's just so much better than the default romance and embraces the height differences between the two lovers.

The Kisses by Charsen is also dwarf friendly (either gender), but I don't remember what it entails. I want to say goodbye kisses at the gate. Didn't Charsen have a dwarf + Zevran wedding mod or did that not get completed? Been a long time, sorry. =/

Edit: Apart from the above, I don't see any other dwarf mods in my folders, which is OK because we're so awesome that we didn't really need that much improvement in the first place. ;)

I think I saw a good mod a month ago that made armor look better on dwarves at DragonAgeNexus, but then it sank into obscurity, can't find it. Doesn't improve dwarves, just how we're shown.
:D

Again hopefully not too intrusive, but just made this for comparison (I'll delete it if it's too much):

Oh, yeh, if counting kiss mods and such, I did spend some time fixing the zevran/dwarf kisses as they were pretty bad (I worked on the rest of the races as well but only for Zevran). Charsen also started a kiss mod, but aside from a couple of female elf kisses, we don't conflict -- I note which ones need to be deleted from either.  The mod I linked (is it tacky for me to link a mod) can be used as a whole mod (it makes for random kisses and has bug fixes and such) or just individual kisses can be used for overrides to the default kisses.

This reminded me of what a pain dwarves are to work with in the cutscene editor.  They are not the same height in the game as they are in the toolset so lining them up properly is frustrating as hell.  But that's also why dwarf kisses look so bad in the vanilla game.

My first dwarf (Lorelai, my avatar) did not have the proportion fix; Sereda does. You can see her fingers and Veylya's hit their legs higher than Kruklya's do on hers.

@Corker Yes, very. noticeable difference. Not sure if I like it better. For sure the height and build of dwarves looks "natural" to their environment, but I'm not sure how evolution within subterranean stone tunnels might favor a dwarf with such long arms. Seems more likely all that unforgiving stonework and short spaces would favor the shorter arms of tmp7704's mod. Still if Kruklya had shorter arms those decapitations she's so fond of would be harder to manage!

Also noticeable are the other changes tmp7704 made- hand size and shoulder width. The arm thickness makes more sense too

@Ethereal Writer Redux- Hey thanks for resuscitating this thread. If your modding gets off the ground I'd be happy to playtest your stuff and help your ideas take shape. The Deep Roads are great "ground" for new material, and if you know a way to add story arcs and revisits to Orz politics, I'm all for it

I thought about changing my Avatar to a Dwarf for when DA3 comes out but I decided to keep the elf. I think the Dwarf had a golden beard with knots in it.  Oops it's a red beard I misremembered.

Anyone else think of changing their Avatar for DA3? Why did you go Dwarf on you Avatar?

I switched my own portrait to this one of my DAO char Blunchard because I love this dwarf face I made for him- so cartoonish but yet so proudly expressive, and also like a stocky dwarven Elvis or Wolverine. I like it better than the human one I did that was vaguely a self-portrait. I've seen a number of excellent dwarf male faces by mochen and also some very good ones by mulch00- definitely worth using as a portrait- but, well, gotta be original, so best I can do is best it'll be...

So did they finally decide to include dwarves in DA3? Since I've not gotten through nearly enough of DAO yet and have heard some serious dismay about DA2 (which seems to just shove dwarves into Orzammar and seal the doors), my concerns are not particularly pressing, but still. I only just yesterday came across that thread where Gaider himself said only 5% of all logged-in players ever play a dwarf... disappointing, though I never liked dwarves so much until DAO, so... Worse was Gaider's statement along the lines of "As a developer I also have to take that 5% figure into consideration." (Clearly a paraphrase, but close...)

On recent posts... I'm not so concerned about dwarf girls being positioned to kiss... *ahem* Alistair... and Zevran... *ahem* I mean, if they really want to, fine, but I don't need the mod. I've seen how the Alistair romance happens, and I wouldn't want my Kruklya enduring that as well. Nor does she identify with Mr. Assassination Is Kinda Neat, being more of a thief than a murderer. Given Oghren's demeanor, I don't think she'd be going for him either if he were an option, but he's more interesting to have around at the moment. And I also think the longer arms makes dwarf girls look older- which I prefer to the human youth appearance. And I may be onto something with my jest about easier decapitations: the longer arms make those elaborate animations look more credible because they extend further into the opponent's general area otherwise. They still don't line up the head chop quite right for all opponents though, but.. the novelty still hasn't worn off for me yet... nor the look of a dwarf girl taking down an ogre...

I've had the same avatar since I started posting here and don't really plan to change it.  DC was my third playthrough, and the first one I really felt like I was adequately role-playing.  I started keeping a... memoir of sorts, a collection of my reactions as I played the game, in the form of chat-styled dialogues and screenshots.

When my husband started actually requesting updates, I thought maybe other people would want to see it, too.  I joined the forums during that PT, as I recall; didn't post much, just a question or two in the ZevThread, using my dwarf avvie because she was my current character.  Then I finished the playthough log and posted that.  And then I got well and truly sucked in.

Two Wardens later, I had another (my Dalish Elf) who I liked about as well as my dwarf, but I'd settled into the avvie and more or less consider it my "forum face".  So I leave her be.

I'm curious about the role of dwarves in DA3. Playing as a dwarf in DAO was just an enriching experience. I know people complained that the Deep Roads were too long, but I really ate up all the lore and looked in every crevice and ruins. Read every broken sign with their amusing sayings. I vaguely remember hearing about statistics being dismal for the amount of people that tried out a dwarf. Pretty sure that I made up at least 2.5% of that because of how many times I replayed the game. (Lost count after the 12th dwarven playthrough!) My favorite was my first Aeducan. Made some hard decisions that really stung at the end of the game, but I wouldn't change anything though.

Image IPB

Others I've played:
Image IPB

As for DA2, I was OK with not being able to play as a dwarf again, but I was dismayed at how marginalized they ended up being. Barely heard anything about Orzammar really. I don't know why they didn't have dwarven female models available either. I had been so excited to see their "roller derby" version of the dwarf female when they released the concept art. Varric was the best thing about DA2 by far though. People were seriously going from "omg I'll never romance a dwarf ew" to heaving sobs about his lack of availability. =p

I don't know if I'll pick up DA3. I hadn't thought about it. Since none of our characters carry forward (and import decisions are bugged like crazy), it's hard to have something to look forward to.
