I can imagine it took along time for Dain to get to Ostagar.
What with him smelling all the flowers, climbing trees, and running through meadows.

I can imagine it looked funny at first and then bugged Duncan after a while. Also my dwarves all romanced Leliana, outside of Thorin. so it was a hot red head, or Orzamr.. descions, descions.

You...had a dwarf named Thorin?

Please tell me your second one was named Gimli.

I was tempted but instead called him Dain.

Tolkien took all the best dwarf names.

Sigh, going through the Deep Roads with Eleka..so...bored.Gah there is so much crap to do there and on this playthrough Im trying to almost all of the quest. I desided to not have Ogran in my party(but I said I would help him and all). Im a two handed warrior so I dont need another one in the party. Its odd not having him there...

My decision was simplified by the fact that I like Orzammar more than I like Alistair, Leliana, Zevran, Morrigan, Dog, Sten, Wynne, Shale, and Loghain combined. Plus, Ferelden as a whole just seemed less interesting than Orzammar and Orlais and Antiva had accents that I wouldn't want to hear all the time.

I personally found Orzamar cliched and a drag.

Live in a cave full of bearded, angry, elititist midgets?

NO.

I like that DA dwarves are a bit of a mix. The living underground thing but with an organised (if machiavellian) society. I'm by no means an expert but it certainly seems a nice take on it to me. They look stereotypical in some ways but they're not at all. (Except Oghren who sometimes seems as if he's from another story but that's personal opinion and no doubt will be proven wrong easily by others).

The elves were a little disappointing to me. I'm not a fan of Tolkein elves but love the Games Workshop kind (Malus rules). I had hopes the Dalish might be a little more 'grunty' but oh well. I do play them a lot in DA but still with that vague sense that they could have been more ;-)

Okay, seriously, you're holding the fact that they have beards (like your avatar does) and their species against them?

Everyone's mileage varies, though, and that's why you end up on staying on the Surface...when you don't go get eaten by a dragon.

Calm down please.
I said bearded because dwarves have sterotypically had beards, not because I didnt like beards.

Also outside of the caste system the dwarves in DA are very similar to Tolkien:
Live Underground
Use axes alot
Drink Alot
have beards
have Scottish/Gaelic influenced names
are excellent miners.
Fight hordes of monsters (Darkspawn/Ocs)

Overall It was almost exactly like other dwarves in LOTR and Warhammer.

I used to make fun of elves a lot in WoW mainly because a lot of the d00ds flocked to that race.

We probably have Tolkien/Peter Jackson to thank as well. Elves = Hugo Weaving = awesome. Oh, and the d00ds? They just all saw that WoW ad that opens with a blood elf in a bikini...

Yeah, if it makes you feel any better, the movies didn't improve the image of elves, either.  At least not for those of us who are crotchety purists.

I won't even go into the sort of elven shenanigans brought on by WoW and other games.  DAO elves were a little too whimsical for my tastes but at least they weren't completely freakish.  I'm hoping for a bit of a darker image in DA2.

Why are you telling me to calm down? I'm not upset. I didn't use any exclamation points, emoticons, or pictures to indicate that I was upset. I just thought that the fact that people in Orzammar are dwarves that have beards is a really weird reason for your dwarf not to want to live there.

Also, I've already said that I don't know much about Tolkein or anything about Warhammer so any similarities don't bother me in the slightest.

I spefically said the beards didnt bother me, I just used it since besides a very few dwarves the rest of a good deal of facial hair.

I dont have to like Orzamar it was nicely detailed over the Dalish, but the Mage origin has more history and meaning to me.

I know you said the beards didn't bother you. You said that in the post after the one that I was clarifying, though, and so I mentioned it to explain what I was, in a very non-upset manner, trying to say earlier.

I never said you had to like Orzammar. As the 'your mileage may vary' in the post you insisted I was upset in implied, different people like different things. I get it. It's fine. You don't get my love for Orzammar and I don't get your love for mages, the US, or a romanced Leliana.

Still not upset, by the way.

Everyone plays differently but overall many of the elements in DA are cut and pasted from other areas in Fantasy.

I'm not a big fantasy fan so I don't notice or care.

I actually like what they did with elves in DAO. They put their own spin on the race so I didn't really feel like I was playing a stereotypical elf -- this was a different experience. I really like the tension between the city elves and the dalish elves. I wish the elves had their own fan thread -- as it is, I have to scour the Alistair thread for Addai's posts because she has such an interesting perspective on playing a dalish elf. I think tmp said he liked the city elf because they were opposite of the ethereal types we see in fantasy. I was a fan of dwarves before this game so it was easy for me to really get into my Aeducan and do things in the best interest of Orzammar. On my first Brosca, I was at a bit of a loss because there was no reason for her to care about the dwarven empire, but after a while, I liked breaking free of that and just being a dwarf in and of itself. I wasn't shackled to Orzammar and could just roam the world instead and meet other interesting dwarves in my travels. It's always hard to choose between an Aeducan and a Brosca if I had to pick one, but I go with Aeducan simply because she was my first character. Nostalgia and all that. ;)

Had I not killed her on the AD, my casteless would've gone back to Orzamarr. Have to spend time with her nephew, smirk at the nobles who looked down on her, enjoy a bed that doesn't make her feel like she's sleeping on a cushioned floor. And, of course, it wouldn't remind her of Alistair.

I like the Dwarf Commenor more than the Noble one though. The commenor one was much more grity and had a better origin story. The scene where the entire Proving sees that you are casteless is just intense.

While the noble is much more connected to Orzamar when they get back, the commenor is a true nobody-hero story.

Sometimes when you take control of Leliana she hums, at a high enough approval.

Okay, I just started one. With any luck, people will even use it. Posted Image

And I like the fall-from-grace story better than the rags-to-riches which helps explain why I like the DN better than the DC.

Thank you!  I would make an elf fan thread but I'm afraid no one would come.   So since the Dalish lovers I know are mostly Alistarians, we borrow his thread to spread the love.  I do like the elven lore of the DA universe, too, specifically the history of oppression.  Lots of interesting dramatic tension there.  What I miss in the Dalish is the darker view you see, briefly, in The Stolen Throne.  While I think side stories like Cammen and Gheyna are sweet, they contribute to a kind of fairy-elf atmosphere.

The dwarven lore is some of the best developed and very interesting, though some of it like the caste system actually makes it harder for me to play.  It's so depressing.  Likewise the city elf.  Both city elf and the dwarven origins are some of the most dramatic of all the origin stories, but honestly I do not know how my city elf Warden would have psychologically survived returning to the alienage and seeing that blood-soaked orphanage.

I'm a Dalish fan. I'm Roma blood, and I like the disconnected/displaced culture Dalish have in this game. My cultural guilt, let me show you it.

Anyway, I've been drawing a dwarf again, have a WiP:
