Hopefully Bhelen will set up a heir, and not become one of those leaders who is to power focused to not set up a second in time over worry about being replaced.

The dwarven army consist of warriors each sworn to different houses, there is no main force that serves directly under the king except House Aeducan's own warriors. If to many of the Houses choose to rebel it could get really ugly.

The Legion of the Dead serves the king of Orzammar directly, for whatever that's worth.

It seems that the casteless also serve Bhelen directly as well.

He would have to train a lot of casteless to match the combined strength of the other noble houses. History also  shows that many great empires has fallen once their leaders die. I'm not saying that Bhelen(or his heir) would necessary lose a war among the dwarves. But even if he wins it could almost destroy them. the dwarven society is nothing like the human where each lord holds land of their own. A war between the dwarves would be on the streets of Orzammar. I think this is one of the reasons blackmail and assasination are so common. The dwarves can not aford to make war like humans do. But if pushed to far the noble houses might reconsider this.

He has a son, so I think that settles that.

Many leaders did have children, but were not willing to step done, or were to concerned about their children plotting against them to actually let them have any power.

Even in the epilogue with Bhelen as King there are still assassins trying to remove him from power. After disintegrating the Assembly, I highly doubt the assassination attempts will cease. Regardless whom gets the throne, I still see potential conflicts erupting.

note: The Legion of the Dead serves the king and only the king. They ensure that he holds power over the lesser houses. Civil war isn't really an issue when the entirety of an army of badass deathseekers is on the side of the king.

Yeah but they exist to fight darkspawn and to keep them away from Orzammar. Would they really be willing to abandon their posts and leave Orzammar vulnerable to get involved in a petty noble civil war?

yeah Kardol in game makes it clear they have no love for nobles/deshyrs who can't find their arse with a map, and will not get involved with politics. They don't care what the king is, as long as there is one.

Which strike me as odd, as if that king says, "yeah you stop work now in the Roads and now work in the city as charity workers" can they refuse?

I think the bigger question is, what can the King do if they do refuse? Kill them? They already feel that they're dead so it wouldn't be much of a deterrent for them and Orzammar doesn't have enough members of the Legion as it is.

I'd think that Bhelen would definitely name his son heir to the throne. Bhelen was the neglected one in the family and resented his brothers for it. So his daddy issues and his desire to see the throne stay within his family would probably be a huge motivating factor in naming an heir.

I agree and he even tells non-dwarves who question him on succession that while heirs CAN be chosen from outside the family, it isn't done often and it's clear that he disapproves. At the same time the lengths he had to go to get the throne and the fact that he outright tells the DC that he won't name Endrin his heir just yet (even though he doesn't have any other children at the moment and that's not what the DC would want to hear) indicate that he'd wait to see which of his children - if any - proved to have the makings of a good King.

Just dropping by to say that my DN-centric AU fiction has just been UPDATED! And has exceeded 200,000 words!

As for the Bhelen deal, I'll go out on a limb here and say that it was his own fault for WANTING to seem inconspicuous that he ended up as the least noticeable in the family.

Back on topic, I think Oghren is the best dwarf. So stereotypical of a dwarf. Plus he has the best humor out of them all.

You think that someone that you feel is a stereotype is the best the species has to offer?

Whoa. I duck out for 2 days again, and the dwarf thread is ALIVE!

I am pleased.

Back in the UK in 36 hours, then I'll post something more on-topic.

OH... BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNNNN

Nice one, Sarah.

And I agree with her. As much as I love my Beserker drinking buddy, he is NOT the best dwarf in the series. I don't know who is, but he definitely isn't.

Kardol would probably be my favorite dwarf in the series, then Gorim and Bhelen tied for second. Dagna is adorable. Over all, though the dwarves have the most factors contributing to their awesomeness: cool architecture, Legion of the Dead, Silent Sisters, Provings, Golems, cool looking heavy armor, Tapsters, Dust Town, and 1001 and one ways to serve nugs.

Is it weird that I can't stand the Silent Sisters? They really seem like they're doing more harm than good for Orzammar's women fighters. They're the only women fighters (except for people like, say, a princess) who are automatically taken seriously. Even Adal Helmi who is likely the sister of a deshyr and a high-up member of a very powerful family has to deal with that kind of crap. The Silent Sisters aren't a threat to the established order of things as they mutilate themselves and so aren't really capable of functioning out there by themselves and need a handler plus they probably never get married and have children so they can't pass along anything about their fighting.

The men in Orzammar have been shown to not really want women fighting but if it's a Silent Sister then they're nice and easily placed apart from the rest of society. If women want to fight and to be taken seriously, society practically shoves them at the Silent Sisters and as long as they're the women fighters given any automatic respect, it stops women fighters from becoming more mainstream and accepted.

Yea, it seems like the Dwarves thought that letting women fight is worth it if it makes them shut up. Literally. :P

I mean I respect the original silent sister. But that thing needs to go away now.

About ranking favorite dwarves. Number 1 is Bhelen. 2nd Kardol. Then all of them.

Kardol is my favourite.

Behind him is Bhelen.

Then Gorim, mostly for his little anti-noble spiel in the origin.

I shall ignore the first comment, since my flogging device is on the other side of the room, and I do not feel like getting up to get it.

The silent sisters do not need to speak. The only conversation required is burying their axe in your skull. Anything else is just pointless, really.

What about flirting? I mean an axe could be intriguing for a while, but that would get too scary eventually.
What about the sweet talk?

I mean it's like having a mute TV, it's useless :P

You actually use WORDS when courting someone? I thought a good shield bash or a skull blugeoning was the unoffical language of love, and WWF style wrestling the prefered form of foreplay!

You men. Is that all you're interested in is TALKING?

Pheh.
