So I purchased NWN 2 about 4 days ago and I'm loving it so far. The thing is though I only purchased NWN 2, not the expansions. I've updated NWN 2 to the latest patch and have installed DX9.0c on my Win7 64-bit desktop so the question is: Will I have problems losing my saved games if I install the expansions?
Thanks in advance.
Got a question..

No I think your saved games will be fine. I find it amazing you found the game without any expansion as most for sale now are bundled with MoTB at the least.

Well I digitally downloaded the game through Atari / Digital River and apparently they wont sell the Deluxe Edition to me since I'm in the west part of the states. So I will be paying for each one individually.

Once you do the Digital Download, does the game have to be activated before or after installation? Or is it just an install .exe that requires a CD key they email you?

It requires activation after the installation and you use the CD Key to activate it.

Farem, welcome to the NWN2 community. Hope you enjoy your stay, and make it a long one.
Once you get the expansions, make sure you get involved with the MP side of the game, if you're interested in that sort of thing.
Great fun and the cheapest entertainment you'll ever buy.

Actually I am very interested in the MP side of NWN 2. Infact that was the main reason I decided to buy the game. Unfortunately for me most servers require you to have the expansions to play so I will need to get them.NWN DM wrote...

On the other hand I haven't played anything D&D for about 6 years so would you guys recommend me to play through the OC and the expansions to get myself up to date on how things work again before diving into MP?

Yes, I would recomend you play through the game at least once before you jump into MP, although you should realize that most PWs out there have customized the rules quite a bit. They may not work the same when you get to those MP servers.
Welcome to NWN2 BTW!! I would highly recomend all expansions as this will give you the richest NWN2 experience as well as allow you to download and play anything created by the community...which is a lot by the way. Much of the community made stuff is better than the OC IMO, so you're in for a treat.

Welcome to the NWN2 community Farem! Please do get all the expansions, and in the future, plan on getting Mysteries of Westgate to complete the official experience.
NWN2 mods and the community are still young, and I strongly suspect nothing less than a creative epiphany coming our way.

I didn't have a problem with saved games but I installed from DVD.
I know this question was asked on another thread, but I didn't really see an answer so I'll ask it here.
When you install the game from a digital download, is the DVD check disabled? Is this possible to configure on the DVD install versions now as well? When you're trying to fix something in the module (particularly code) and you go through several iterations of a fix, those 10 seconds for DVD checks really add up.
It's mighty frustrating, I have to say, so if this can be disabled now (like it eventually was in NWN1), I'll be a really happy camper.

The DVD Check from D2D installation is not there, but, the SecuROM check is still there. I don't have any hard data, though the anecdotal data I have mentally accumulated indicates that load times (until patching to 1.23.1763 at least -- first SecuROM removal) are only slightly faster than with the DVD check (and in the drive.) Once the check is removed, my gut tells me that load times would be equivalent and faster all the way around (and they are on my machine.) Retail DVD in my case.

Sorry, I don't follow DNO. What's D2D?
I'm patched to the latest version and my drive still spins up whenever I launch the game. So NWN2 must still be searching for the disc.
I didn't think to check if the disc is still actually required to play, but then, why access the drive at all? That's the part that slows things down. Drive must spin up first and then the disc must be read.

Direct 2 Drive, digital distribution, online purchasing, file transferred over the internet only, take yer pick. I don't recall it accessing my drive since the latest patch, but I could be wrong. It may be part of the executable to simply check to see if they're going to load from disc first... haven't noticed.

Gotcha. Sorry, I'm not up to date on the acronyms. I'm old school, I guess. I still buy discs! And my install definitely checks my drive, so I'm wondering if the digital version does not.
It would be great if Farem or anyone else who has a digital version could confirm if their NWN2 install spins their drive on launch.
Much obliged.

My disc drive does not spin on launch of NWN 2 cipher. Absolutely no disc required for digital copies.

Oh Cipher, I've been Old School since old school was the only school. I've got a shelf full of all my favorite (and some not so favorite) computer games. The only ones not on the shelf are laying next to my computer. I go from 5.25" discs in my Gold Box games (and Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, Falcon 1.0, Strike Fleet, etc.) to DVD ROM boxes with NWN Diamond and NWN2 Gold. I won't get my games online only. I can assure you, my drive does not spin up when I start the game. Nope, just checked again. Nary a little light comes on. Patched to 1.23.1765 and I have NWN2/MotB and SoZ all installed.
So if it is, then hmm. Don't know what to say.

So I took OUT the disc from the drive and then launched NWN2 to see what happens. There was no disc access this time! If there's a disc in the drive it spins. If not, it doesn't. I wonder if this is NWN2 or just windows weirdness.
Anyway, problem solved. Thank you guys! By not waiting on the disc anymore, you've just helped me create more time! Now if only we can stop time....

Glad to hear that, Cipher. Sadly, Time Stop was not included with the game or any of it's expansions.
