I'm pretty sure not...Hawke looks older, and that's about it. Generally older brothers and sisters don't last very long in RPGs...little ones make great sidekicks, though!
Well... Bhelen
Clearly the exception

Ok so not a fan of Aerie and Haer'Dalis I take it?.
So long since I have played it, was that BG2?, I remember Aerie the non-winged winged elf, Haer'Dalis rings a bell but I'm at a loss there.
I'd suggest if such patter gets tiresome only use them in seperate parties, if such an occurence were to occur.
Rant as much as you want, if something irked you it no doubt did others
You think?
You're right, Aerie's the non-winged avariel, and Haer'Dalis is the tiefling bard you rescue from an astral prison run by a cambion. And believe me, after the first time I used Aerie, I never brought her again. Haer'Dalis on his own is happy as a clam.
Malanek999 wrote...
I thought the HaerDalis/Aerie romance was great. Things like that make the story feel more realistic. It was also very well written, it really brought out both characters. I do however think that certain characters (with high charisma) should have been able to outdo Haerdalis. Anyway, I would support seeing this feature again.
I'm not saying it was poorly written. But I did think it was poorly implemented. And I'm sure I'm not the only one. It also doesn't help that I despise Aerie with the fury of a thousand suns
But back on topic: Aerie and Haer'Dalis are part of the reason I'm not chuffed with NPC/NPC romances; I'm not saying they're impossible to implement well, but implementing them is something of a thankless task. If it's done well, it's a cute subplot that doesn't really contribute to the main story. If it's done poorly, it's a crapfest. They may be more realistic, but more realistic does not necessarily make for a better game.

You think?I'm actually ok with Haer'Dalis, I'm just a little bitter that his romance with the female Bhaalspawn was cut while his NPC/NPC romance was retained. Aerie...yeah, don't get me started on Aerie. It'll end with me breaking out a buzzsaw or somesuch.

Well I guess it depends on the writing of said npc's, two reserved characters may be more restrained whilst two outgoing characters may be more in your face.

I don't mind playing big sis--I did it for Imoen in BG2 and loved it--but there are better ways than inter-NPC romances. 9 times out of 10, they get to be highly obnoxious.
See also: Aerie and Haer'Dalis. *pulls out shotgun*
Indeed, but surely a nauseating romance between npc's is better dynamic than a party just waiting for the PC to click their fingers?
...have you ever played in a party with Aerie and Haer'Dalis? Not only is it nauseating, it's downright DISRUPTIVE. Their stupid banter comes up at the worst times, not to mention how it messes with any PCs attempting to romance Aerie (though why anyone would want the insufferable harpy is completely beyond my comprehension).
If there are NPC/NPC romances, a few simple things could make them a lot less annoying.*is trying not to rant*
- Don't upstage the PC. Yeah I'm a selfish prat, but there is kind of a main character.
- No inter-NPC romances involving characters that the PC could romance. It just gets messy and obnoxious.
- Keep it short, simple, and sweet. A subplot is cute. A "look at Aerie and Haer'Dalis being nauseating every 30 minutes" is decidedly not.
Exactly. I absolutely despise having to compete for their affections--I know it may sound hypocritical since they often have to compete for my character's, but the way I see it is that, since I'm a real life person, I may or may not pick another character over them--it has to do with whoever my character finds the most suitable.
For a romance triangle between two NPCs, my romance interest will always end up with the other character if I don't look his/her way. To me, it seems like some sort of weird, paradox second-best. Like I'm the best manipulator so I get him first (considering I can be just about any personality type, it really does seem as if my LI would only pick me based on my astounding ability to say the exact right thing).

And from a design standpoint, that was always my problem with Aerie and Haer'Dalis. I know it's not realistic, but this is a game about changing Thedas and acquiring "power at any cost," not a social dating sim. Certain things have to be simplified for the sake of, ya know, fun. Dealing with a love triangle like that in which you're dumped at the drop of a hat for saying the slightest thing wrong is not FUN, unless you're the kind of person who likes insufferably fickle and prissy LIs.

a) Non romanceable characters
2. Don't let them steal the show. The game is about Hawke, not them.

I'd really like to see some kind of inter party interaction that goes beyond simple banter. A romance would be great, hell could even have an npc being interested in our potential LI.
And to lose out to an npc?, a Kobayashi Maru situation no doubt, would no doubt infuriate many, but would make for great roleplay.

Well it could be a result, depending on how you play your cards. Some consequence you know.

You can lose out to no one. Assuming, under the hood, it is based on approval it is pretty much the same thing but more interesting. "Winning" is more satifying when there is competition.Bobad wrote...

Some nice roleplaying added to the mix, see the partymembers evolve along side you would do the story good. Makes sense, though I'm not sure Bioware thinks its worth implementing.

That would be true if the romance interest wouldn't actually end up with the other chick/guy--or if the other person was only interested because of the PC's interest. Then it's competition. Otherwise it's playing the master manipulator game. Like I said, I always feel like I'm second-best to my romance interest's real choice. Because I manage to manipulate that approval bar higher, and that's the only reason.

exactly my point as it would give the NPC's more motivation for thier actions if theres a relevant relationship between NPC charicters (not specifically taliking romances) for instance alistair hates you for stealing his preferred girl rather than you just being a ****...
or some other dude feeling the need to save another party memeber in a near suicide mishon you know justsuggesting that the intra party social dynamic is made more apparent so you know who likes who and who hates who whos pineing for who becuse in origins you see them travveling for (i think its about) a one year period i find it hard to belive that a certain comaradery wouldent form

Besides you can have a threesome without 2 of the people actually having sex together.

The thing is, you can get a very strong party social dynamic without romance. It's called friendship, and it WORKS. It worked just fine in KOTOR and KOTOR II--though in the sequel it was less friendship and more who wanted to kill each other the least. It worked fine with the inter-party banter in DA:O. You don't need a complicating romance to have compelling inter-party relationships.

No I'm not. Stop whining. If you can't handle what I'm saying maybe you shouldn't be discussing a game thats more than likely going to be rated mature,
And I never mentioned anything regarding incest besides the little sarcastic comment.
