Yeah, it sounds great, but this worries me, too. There are even women who wanted to get it on with Zaeed (must be the British accent) and Haer'Dalis and such. How are you going to create a male character that doesn't cause at least a few women to nerdrage after the fact over the fact that he wanted Bethany instead of LadyHawke and they didn't like the other options? At best, a small minority are depressed. At worst, 40-50% of your fan base is depressed. I mean, I sure did lament about Bann Teagan's unromanceableness. How do you make a character appealing enough to romance Bethany, and yet not so appealing that he attracts a portion of your fan base more than the other characters? That's gotta be hard.Gill Kaiser wrote...
But what if Lady Hawke falls in love with Bethany's boyfriend? What then?
Plus, I don't know if I want them to dedicate resources to content like that... the Aerie/Haer'Dalis thing was interesting enough, if sickeningly sweet, but I'd rather have another NPC available for the PC than just to watch something like that happen. I'd rather it be off-screen anyway, and have Bethany just mention she thought someone was cute, as long as it makes sense. But then, over a ten year period, there should be plenty of opportunities for her to slowly fall for some minstrel we keep bumping into. That might be nice. They should totally give you the chance to be overprotective and force her to sneak around, though.
The less non-interactive content there is, the better. And if they gave you too much influence over Bethany's romance, it would feel like metagaming. It should be unobtrusive, novel-style, like just seeing them walking around or talking together at camp, and not necessarily involve the main character much.

A minor NPC.

Indeed, I believe the most interesting scenario there would be possesion by Flemeth, which would make for a world of problems for Hawke.

Yeah, that's what I meant with the "minstrel we keep bumping into" thing, but he would have to be pretty average in most ways to avoid every LadyHawke's interest.Collider wrote...

Yeah, I worry about that too, hopefully it won't happen. That's a little too Baldur's Gate 2, if she dies or gets abducted. "Stuffed into the Fridge" is the trope--she'd become the token damsel who gets thrown into peril to motivate the big hero. (Not that I didn't enjoy it in BG2, but now I'm actively aware of it, so if they did it again...) Possession by Flemeth might be interesting, in that it would be utterly horrifying, but it wouldn't alleviate the fact that that trope is both well-known and potentially quite annoying. It would have to be really well-written and executed to avoid being (a) predictable by the player and (joriandrake wrote...

Honestly, when I heard you had a sister, my first thought was "well, I'd expect her to end up some sort of motivation object, but probably Bioware knows we'll all be anticipating that." So I'm really hoping that they avoided that trope altogether and did something cool with Bethany.
The far more elegant feat would be to place a character at your side during the entire story who is neither boring nor annoying to the vast majority of players and Hawkes. That would be impressive. I'm looking forward to more Bethany info in general.

Something like that dude who the fem City Elf was going to marry would be good. You know enough/see enough that you can tell he's a nice guy, but not so much that he becomes that interesting.

it doesn't have to be Flemeth, could be any random demon or somesuch

Agreed, however I think that Flemeth would be a better choice as she is already known to be very powerful and other demons in the first game were a lot easier to deal with than her.
I think this would introduce a greater jeopardy for the character, as we have already seen that a quick trip to the circle tower and a two minute excursion in the fade was sufficient to deal with a regular possesion.

hmmm propably a little too easy:
1. catch her (were an epic hero and stuff we can easily make that
2. drag her to the circle of magi for some kind of fade action and kill the demon
3. if 2 doesn't work because shes an apostate, well first search for a bloodmage or become one ourselfes, then we search for a "volunteer" (wheres the next alienage again??) and go in the fade for some more fade action. problem=solved.

Yes Cammen was a bit lame, but I enjoyed that you could influence the lives of such minor npc's as well as being a kingmaker.
Also the whole Cammen quest did allow you to be a complete cad and bed Ghenna, which Wynne approved of for some reason, maybe she has a thing for bad boys?

If it is, I'd just kill the guy. She'd be pissed but she'd thank me later.

Of course this is as long as she doesn't get in the way of my PCs love interest. Otherwise *crushing prison* "You are just talking pixels to me! Muhahahaha!"
