Nice!!! Im liking how the combat is shaping up....If indeed they stay on track with this. On a candid note, I found this comment rather humorous:

2. The combat is being refined.
The combat in Dragon Age Origins was very tactical, allowing you to issue orders to the folks in your party. For the sequel, BioWare is aiming to keep that tactical aspect but also make it more action packed, if players wish it to be. Today we got a taste of the new combat system with a mountaintop battle against an army of orcs. They might have been imps or goblins or demons, actually. We're not nerdy enough to know the difference.

The last sentence made me LOL

Edit: I read the rest of the combat paragraph and laughed at myself because I realized it's pretty much the same as DA:O Image IPB

Thank you very much clarifying this. The way the reviewer painted it made the conversation wheel seem very limited.

I imagine that's the only dialogue he saw? The demo is pretty action-packed and there's only the one conversation-- which, yes, has three options in it. As has been said elsewhere in this thread, however, that's not all we're limited to.

The personality options (which the article mis-characterizes, I'm afraid-- they may have been more his impression of the lines he saw rather than our explanation of them) have a bit more complexity as to what they affect. That's probably part of a larger conversation, however, so we'll talk about it at length later.

Thank you for responding. The term "complexity" makes me happy, but I hope that the relevant people are aware of the misleading nature of this article. I know that since it has already been released to the internets not a lot can be done about it, but perhaps the next installation of information should include a better explanation of the dialog system (which I believe is a topic of concern for most rpg-gamers).

***I also suggest sending ninjas to Hatfields house to kidnap his games and xbox. (A little note will be left at the scene saying: "These items were meant for nerds only.")

A sequel to a very well received and selling game would be expected to have the same level of production and gameplay across the board.

Same guys are making the game. This is the way they want to go, it's their property. They're not forcing me to buy it. I've got faith in them enough. And if that faith is shaken, I won't buy their games anymore. Simple.

What we've been told and shone thus far seems to be anything but...

There are plenty of reasons for concern about where this game is heading.

And here is the problem. Constructive criticism - great! Keep it up. Bad part? Declaring 'BIOWARE HAS RUINED THE FRANCHISE' 50 times in a week is not constructive criticism. It's being a freaking obstructive **** getting in the way of actual suggestions.

To be realistic, there's no win here. You have an opinion on how you'd like the game to be. You want it to be essentially like the old one. Let's say Bioware magically bows to your whims. You're happy. You go away.

And you're instantly replaced by the exact same amount of people complaining that it's less of a game than an expansion pack, and that it sucks and Bioware ruined the franchise forever. No matter what Bioware does, people will complain. So, I say let Bioware do what they want, take criticism as they wish but don't let unruly hoards of miscreants on the forums decide what they should do, because they will always be there and they will always be unruly.

Yeah, I got the feeling that the article was poorly written, which I honestly expect from IGN at this point. Anyways, sounds good so far. Looking forward to the trailer and stuff.

Exactly, Daemon was just trying to sound like he knew what he was talking about.

The part where he mentioned...

Each choice is represented by an icon that indicates whether or it's a "good," "nasty," or "badass" choice. Good choices are represented by an olive branch, nasty by a Greek comedy mask, and badass by a red fist.

Made me question if he really asked any questions about the game at all. it sounds like he was simply given the controller, played, left, and made his own decisions about the game.

Hmm, ok, that journalist appears to be an imbecile.

IGN's style post Dave Z/Dave Smith has been to hire these guys who think they are youtube/-etard celebrities.  Greg Miller is notorious for trying to be cheeky monkey LULZ funny, and fails every time.

The guy who wrote the DA2 preview is INTENTIONALLY calling darkspawn "orcs" because he thinks he is being funny.

That being said, the combat sounds like Mass Effect 2, exactly as we predicted.  Now we away for the announcement that the party is down to 3 instead of 4 and you can't change gear on your party

Geeze...way to steal all of BW's thunder for the next big announcement on how much DA2 "improves" on the original.

Way to go.... :pinched:

Today we got a taste of the new combat system with a mountaintop battle
against an army of orcs. They might have been imps or goblins or
demons, actually. We're not nerdy enough to know the difference.

The guy is reviewing a videogame at a comic book convention (not a nerdy thing at all) and proceeds to declare with pride that he's not nerdy enough to actually provide accurate information? What a f*cking douchebag.

This is intentional.  Hatfield knows the difference, he is trying to be meta sarcastic/ pre-trolling the fanbois.

The only videogame writer who was actually good at this was David F. Smith, who IGN fired 10 years ago because EIDOS complained about his Deus Ex PS2 review.

You'd be surprised how many kiddiez actually like Greg Miller's writing style and lame podcast camera hamming.  IGN knows it's audience is a bunch of tumblr 4chan trolltards so they play to that audience.

They lost their journalism slant when Doug Perry/Dave Z left.  It's all about IntErWebZ luLz with them now.  Well they think they get lulz, they just get  /sighs from adults IMO

Whatever weird sense of humor he wants to use, it should not interfere with providing his readers with accurate information. So I still say douchebag. And a crappy reporter to boot.

^^^ Agreed.

This article perfectly demonstrates why I can't stand sites like Gamespy / IGN et al. The lack of professionalism, clarity, real information and the fact that their content is written by utter morons like the person who wrote this particular piece. Really, it's unbelievable.

By any means, PM me, because it might contain spoilers, and should not be mentioned on "General Discussion".

Yeah I'd like to know this too.

Anyway the 6 options will be (confirmed by devs)
Response 1
Response 2
Response 3
Response 4
Response 5
more..

If you select 'more..'. you get 5 more options and 'back..'.

The number of responses is unlimited.

You might ask 20 questions but only as part of a chain of 5 selections > NPC Reponse > 5 selection > NPC response. There's nothing in the wheel thast stops that same chain from happening.

You could probably find that in DAO too. Not sure why this is a bad thing?

I'm not really sure where the "there are only three options for dialog" impression they got came from. Perhaps it was when I showed one half of the dialog wheel with three options...which, you know, leaves another half open for...you know...other....options. *Shrug*

Also probably worth noting that we're not locked into specific icons per place in the wheel. Oh no. We have -much- more flexibility than that. We're like gymnasts.

I wouldn't worry about it. The author of the review sounded like he never even touched a DA game.
The whole ''orcs'' reference actually made me laugh.

Everything looks great from my perspective, and there are a lot of people behind you BioWare :)

Still makes me laugh everytime I read that please please please Bioware can you have someone in DA2 say "Is that Darkspawn and someone reply "not sure could be orcs, ask so and so he's a nerd" :P

Are they removing gear and "leveling"?

My disappointment with ME2 was the change into a shooter, all these "previews" make it sound like DA2 is going that way as well.

It could be cool I suppose if DA2 is more of a hack-n-slash, mix things up a little and then return to classic RPG style for DA3.  I would appreciate DA3 a lot more if that were the case.

Period.
