If Baldur's Gate 2 was released at a time when we had as many forum users as this day it would have just as many complaints....

Yes and people were just as vitriolic and sure of their views as they are now. On the other hand, this is why I try to hold back on my carping, because I've seen it all these complaints before. People comparing apples to oranges, holding games up to impossible standards, and people who never played the game because they are convinced it sucks and don't shut up about it. Everyone who thinks they are breaking new ground by beating something down because it's popular, I got news for you...

I love how people think that in the bad old days of Baldur's gate II that forums didn't exist and everyone had to pound on stones to send their complaints in to bioware.  The net is much more entrenched now, but gamers (especially pc gamers) knew of the net back then...

I think the only difference between then and now is that a lot of modern gamers aren't used to RPGs with major depth and complicated mechanics. The roleplaying market for the past several years has either been dominated by first-person games like Oblivion or hack-and-slash action RPGs modeled on Diablo. Dragon Age belongs to a sub- genre that just hasn't been popular in the past 4-5 years.

Back in 2000, fans of RPGs like Baldur's Gate would know exactly what they're getting into. I'm guessing that some of the biggest complainers bought Dragon Age and without realizing just what they were getting into.

Finally, I think PC Gaming has become more and more about being able to run games with stunning graphics. When a new game doesn't deliver jaw-dropping eye candy or doesn't require you to buy a super-computer in order to run it, some people will get upset.

The people who think DA:O is some huge step down from BG2 because of the number of complaints about the graphics/difficulty/lack of difficulty etc just don't understand that every high profile video game released today has more forum complaints than any game released 10 years ago because the percentage of gamers who participate in forums has sky rocketed, in the past if you didn't like a game you wouldn't bother to track down it's forums and feel the need to complain about how it doesn't fit your view of the perfect game, if you didn't like a game you just wouldn't play it and move on. These days there's a huge number of 'gamers' who get all their enjoyment out of making negative forums posts about a game instead of ever actually playing it.

If you think DA:O is a bad game, just ****, leave the community to the people who actually enjoy the game and go find something else to do with your time.

Half of the forums on the Internet are dedicated to the 1998 video game StarCraft.

You are definately right, sir.  There were forums in the 1990s and early 21st century.  In fact, there were BBSes back in the 1970s.  The thing is:
1: Most of those forums aren't around anymore.
2: Most people didn't know about them or atleast didn't use them.
3: The few people who did use them weren't ussually gamers.

Well, there is BG series forum up and running, and most people posting in it rather seem to like the game. :)

Maybe there were more bugs in the original release, but I nonetheless just love the fact how light the system requirements are, how attached you become to your NPCs, and also the Infinity Engine was rather nice at the time, and still remains so I think. NWN series camera angles were just serious annoyance to me as much as i wanted to like the series!

Regrettably since it is +10 years old I still considered it the very best non-solo playing PRG released, and what matters is the soul, depth and fun that was in this game like there has never been since.

Yet, every game has its fans and haters, and surely there would have been detractors as well - and at times one feels negativity is all the rage.

The Graphics will NEVER be as mind boggling as you had hoped, the dialog is GOING to annoy you (more so it it's voiced), you WILL encounter a game breaking bug, lose your save file and have to start from scratch and one should simply be thankful that npc DOESN'T end his dialog with a "This game brought to you by..." statement

But trust me on the sunscreen… Everybody's free .....

Maybe the BBS's, but by the time I really got in to forums (The late 90's) There were a ton of gamers, especially PC gamers, using them.  I remember reading forums related to Fallout/Torment/Diablo/Baldur's Gate/Unreal Tourney...

Alot of these are still around as archives on the sites of the companies that made them.   Others are archived on places like No Mutants Allowed, etc.  SOOOO Maybe my memory is messed up, but i'm sure I used a computer to connect to the intertubes and post things in a forum like web page back in the day, with lots of others posting, and many of those posts resembling this thread and lots of others.

There may be More people on the net now, but I still say the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I loved BG and BG2. I love DA:O. They are completely different games, but the spirit and scope of both are very similar, and it was the spirit and scope that impressed me. I've never been as impressed by fancy graphics and effects as I have been by good story and background, but I'm not going to hold good graphics against a game unless they are so high end that I can't play it. Overall, my opinion is that both games are great based on their own merits. As someone else said, the reality is that these days the people who love something tend to make up the silent majority. The forums have become a veritable breeding ground for trolls. Welcome to the modern internet age.
