Hmm. Anybody have an X-Acto blade? I need to slice open my eardrums really quick. Shouldn't take too long and you can have it right back.

Sign me up for a Hawke that can emote more than one disposition convincingly, please.

You can't govern a person of who and what they are just be the sound of their voice, I noticed some people on here stating they will "make" their character on how Hawke's voice will sound, this is not an option, if you be nice to someone in a conversation, you're going to have a calm voice, if you decided to be nasty, Hawke is obviously going to sound more angry and serious on the matter, it worked for Mass Effect and it's going to work for Dragon Age.

Whereas I would rather Hawke be calm and erudite.

That Hawke is voiced at all thus guarantees that one of us wil be disappointed.

Not necessarily. Particularly not if we have a flexible enough actor that the calm and erudite lines are voiced appropriately and the more dangerous statements are given some grit and growl (although, not to the degree the OP suggested.)

As Rogue Unit said, there's just as much possibility of disappointment with no voice. If they did it right, none of us will be much disappointed, and some will be thrilled. And if you're lucky, you'll be able to turn off the player lines, although I wouldn't expect it and you may even change your mind if they really cast him well.

As long as it isn't as monotone as Shepard's, I'll get by

I'd rather have a voice capable of subtlety, emotion (besides rage), and nuance, myself.

The above quotes embody what I'd like from both genders of Shepard. (Except for the monotone; that's Mark Meer. Love the guy, but his Shepard was lacking. JH had more voice experience.)  Particularly that the actor can effect emotions besides rage. An actor unable to explore the full range of human emotions just can't sound like a real man and certainly can't play a lead character. It would be like casting Arnold Schwarzeneggar as Hamlet. No, just... no. I hope they chose an experienced voice actor with range, and preferably a natural British accent.

Umm...no.
I LOVE Jennifer Hale, and she was brilliant as femShep.  But even with
the accent, I can recognize her voice in just about anything now.
Avatar, Metroid, KOTOR, now ME...especially ME.  I hear Hale's voice,
and I either think "BASTILA" or "FEMSHEP" immediately.  I'm pulling for
Grey DeLisle.

Yeah, I love Jennifer Hale, but I hope they anticipated the Mass Effect comparisons and avoided casting her.

I love Grey DeLisle, but same deal. I've heard her voice a lot, I can recognize her too easily, she just played Velanna in Awakening, and she's still not British. If Hawke is to have a British accent, I'd prefer that her actor be an actual Brit.

I heard Dude
Hawke's voice at the SDCC demo. If it is anyone that BioWare has used
before, I wasn't able to recognize it. It's not Mark Meer haha (or
Sbarge). It's difficult to describe... not too gruff, not too sissy.
Good acting from what I saw/heard. He had a UK accent (obviously).
Bethany's VO was quality as well.

That is lovely to hear! They've avoided my main worry for DudeHawke, then. Thank you for sharing that. :)

Having a voiced protagonist, especially in this climate of gaming where men need to be hypermasculine in order to pass as being anything other than 'weak,' it does have me worried. My male PCs were never ultra butch, just calculated and erudite and oftentimes whisper-lethal (not in the Bale Batman chewing gravel way, ;P).

But this reminded me of some of the lines in DAO. If we get a flexible actor for the Hawkes, can you imagine Dude Hawke responding to some of Leliana's dialogues? 'Ooh, I love shoes!' 'They sound so divine!' Ohhh, LAWDY, I will love it if my Dude Hawke could be in touch with his feminine side. Mostly just to spite the brogamers. Still -- tis fun!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. NO O O O O. Niet. Nein. No (in Spanish).

What about the poor people who don't want their Hawke to be a clueless macho? Deep voice is bad. I hope with all my heart BW has chosen someone with a voice who is neither squeaky nor gravelly.

I want my guy to be a clueless macho

Exactly.  My MaleShep (whom I played for maybe 30 minutes before abandoning him due to the voice-over) would have bee better served by FemShep's voice.

That's right.  The Male Shepard voice was so wrong for my character that I would rather have been able to use the voice from the WRONG GENDER.

It was because of this that I asked for that ability in DAO.  My wish was not granted.

ha ha.. did a dev respond to you on this? what did they say?

This is a bit off topic.. i was just thinking about what i would like to see dragon age's voice over do better than mass effects.. and i came up with:

If a big event happens (like kaiden or ashley dying).. i think the defult greetings should be changed for a short time afterwards. having the same happy "dismissed chef" after talking about kaiden's death with ashley was totally out of place :( (i was playing femshep for the record, cause hale is heaven)

also! I couldn't imagine grey delise playing a heroine or super good character... she is too good at evil

And that on different playthroughs, even if we choose to roleplay a wildly different character, he will sound the same.

I am not in favour of a voiced PC, and I really hope they include some kind of option to turn it off if you want.

But I suppose if I had to hear it, I would want an older sounding voice. Wise and world weary. And the female voice to sound calm and intelligent.

What I most look forward to in having a voiced pc for DA2: English accents. :D I know you listen to everyone else talk in accents during DA:O, but it's just so much better when it's your own character.

Side note: I hope ladyhawke is a bit more feminine than femshep was. Not that Jennifer Hale didn't do an excellent job, but I'd like the character to be a little more poised I suppose... if that makes sense.

On a more serious note (though I do think Brian Blessed would rock), I'm not especially keen on a VA for the main character. I love having a voice for Shepard in the ME games, having a pregen for that was fine, and even for Alpha Protocol, but for DA I do not want, DA was more old school, create your own character, now it seems everyone wants all games to be the same. Can't we just have one franchise left with no VA please? Do they all have to be identical?

Either Simon Templeman or the guy who did Mike Thorton (I actually liked his voice, was not hypermasculine which is probably why others didn't, the insecurity people have nowadays) would be suitable if they really must have it, but at this rate they might as well mass produce games just by changing the textures with the way things are going...

There will always be people who will be much disappointed with a VA no matter how good they are.

Yes, that is the huge problem with roleplaying a character with a set voice.  The personality and tone and inflection are ultimately the same, with a set expression behind the character.  Hopefully with Hawke we will be able to have some personality differentiation.  However, the problem with making different dialogue choices have different tones means that choosing different responses in one dialogue tree could make the character appear as a bipolar sociopath.  (Shepard is an example of that at times.)

Add in that we have a character that will span a decade and it gets even more concerning, IMO.  Not everyone starts off - or should start off - as a Level One Survivor with tough as nails and ultra macho voice and then end up with the exact same tone and gruff at the end of the game, those ten years, like a grizzled War General.  (Not that I want this kind of voice at all, but it is the typical hypermasculine version protagonists receive.)  I'd rather see growth reflecting in the character's tone and personality over a decade

Even if the VA is a great actor, I still have reservations.

That's why I liked DA1. It avoided the problems of VO and had more dialogue text thanks to that. As to the peasant Hawke-there will be little personalization it seems. Already we are limited from 7 to 1 surnames and one race. Bleh.
