Hrmm, conversations about the surroundings and the events that are actually happening... funny thing.... that sounds like the content of the conversations in Awakening! And a seemingly large percentage of people who frequent these forums hated how conversations played out in Awakening because apparently they were "terrible" and "didn't tell [me] about the characters" etc. Go figure.

The problem was that the conversation was not about a major game decision (think Alistair after Redcliffe) but rather about some random tree or statue that you found that was supposed to be illustrative of the character's persona. The problem was that you had to find random tree, and then listen to a three line snappy remark. It was too shallow, and the wrong kind of cue.

Also, I would like less love romances. Morrigan's was refreshing in that sense because you didn't have to declare eternal love, but at the same time it was frustrating because in absence of that it went to heavily onto the other side as friends with benefits. It is entirely possible to be in a monogamous relationship with someone, care about them and their wellbeing, yet not either declare love or buy into it in any meaningful way.

A controversial opinion among the Bioware fandom, I know. But I kinda feel like the discussions and kvetching about the various options, who should be, who shouldn't be, etc. overwhelm any other discussion. Not completely, it has to be said, but I dread something like the Tali crazies taking hold over the DA fandom. Thank goodness the "love" was evenly distributed among every character of DA:O...

I realize it is too late at this point, but no harm in making our voices heard as well, just to let the devs know that the dating sim aspect of the games are NOT the main selling point for everyone, and that it might have been refreshing to not have romances in this game?

I like the option of a romance.  It's one of the reasons i buy all of BioWare games, and why i play them more than I play the other games I have.  But I don't always pursue them.  It's a choice.  They have always had this element in their games and I would be very disappointed if they removed it.

There will always be extremist on the boards.  Back in the day, there were outright wars between Carth and Bastila lovers and haters.  But the two romances added a lot of character to the game.

Her romancing was perhaps the least appealing to me, I still wouldn't want it removed from the game just because I personally never liked it, there are still others who do

I thought the romances in DA:O added much to the game. However DA2 sounds like it's going to be quite dfifferent in the way you interact with NPC's, so I can't really say if romances will be good or not until I've played them.

No, it was the character talking about the object, or the objecting supposedly triggering some memory. That's what I meant about it being illustrative. It was just the wrong kind of interaction. We have plenty of in-game events to talk about: the darkspawn, the architect, etc. There is no need to introduce these new elements, IMO.

Characters should tell you about themselves to some degree, but it would make much more sense for the conversation to be about now. When I talk to my friends, I am not asking how they grew up but rather talking about what is happening now.

From what I remember of DA:O, there weren't any romances if you didn't want them to be there. It was an effective enough system as anyone could ask for.

To be frank my worst fear about romances in DA2 is that just as you are already predetermined to have a race and origin your character is also predetermined to have a single male/female romance/marriage option in the whole game, this would be even worse than the removal of all the romances

I appreciate some people don't need or want this content, but I also don't think that people who enjoy such content (and even spend an inordinate amount of time discussing it) are weird, unreasonable, or desperate. If I was those things I would play dating sims...but I don't want to play dating sims. I want an interesting romance woven into the framework of an epic story. What Bioware does in other words.

Wall of text=ouch.....sorry.

Totally agree. I don't buy or play dating sims. Much as I love the Bioware romances I would have about zero interest in a pure dating sim with no other gameplay aspect. Also I think it's funny that people think romance-lovers are lonely weirdos given the amount of married or otherwise non-single fans I see around the boards.

Friends who don't play video games just think I'm wasting my time while I think they are wasting their time watching American Idle, or Big Brother.

And from listening to some of the talk shows, they think we are all losers if we are playing any kind of video game, living in our parents basement instead of our 3 bedroom home with husband, stepdaughter, pets and job.  Sometimes I'd like to smack them on the back of the head.

I do play Sims.  It's like watching a fish tank making them do all of the stuff I hate, like housework.  I leave the room and come back to see if their house burned down while I was gone.   Oh and yes, I like to build houses.  That's it.  lots of houses.  But I also like Fall Out 3, Civilization and even Fable 2.  All of BioWare games, and I'm looking forward to DA2 and ME3.

Without the well written story and well written romance in their games, BioWare would just be putting out another game.  I wouldn't pre-order but might buy.  Right now, I pre-order everything they do.

But DA:O was great in that regard, you could still be friends with all the four LI even if you did not pursue the romance. ME2 was a big step back from that but I am confident that relationships in DA2 would be similar to those in DA:O and not those in ME2.

Well they were being developed at the same time so it was not like ME2 specifically set out to not have that feature.  I also hope that feature of DA:O becomes standard in Bioware games going forward.

That is your worst fear?

While that would be unfortunate that is hardly a catastrophe.  They pretty much had that in KOTOR and it was not terrible.

I like romances, gives your character more personality. That not-so-friendly banter between Morrigan and Leliana about sharing was a nice touch.

I hope party banter like in DA:O returns. In ME2 it felt like squadmates didnt know each other existed except during the two conflicts between Legion and Tali and Miranda/Jack.

Agree.  I hope ME3 takes some of the DA:O ideas on dialog and adds more for all of them.

I wouldn't mind it if you could have friendships with party members and weren't forced to pursue them to find out more about your party members. Also they wouldn't be as bad if the options weren't: a) be a nice guy and be forced to romance them or B) be a jerk.

I'm not usually so blunt, but you evidently suck at dialogue choices. I have Wardens who are super best friends with Zevran (and that's just one instance), and guess what? No romance needed.

As for your fear of character-worshipping maniacs, I have to agree that the Tali fetishists are (most of them) highly unsettling, but you can't really blame them for liking something, can you?

Seriously, you can get high approval without any romance. With gifts, if your (virtual!) social skills are so bad.

Anyway, this is just my two cents, so please don't take it personally.

Well, I would say my worst fear is to lose costumization options and origins, but as those already happened my next "worst fear" would be a predetermined future including whom the character marries

Well we already lost the origins and the race options due to VO.  I do not think Bioware is out to destroy options if they do not have to, but they have higher priorities...that is to say VO was a higher priority than race/origins.

Also I believe it was a marketing move.

Probably necessary in the expensive developement costs and necessity of massive sales in today's market.  I plan on rolling with it and seeing what the final result is before deciding if the sacrifice was worth while.

So freaking glad the tactical combat is remaining.  That was among my worst fears.

Oh and if they are going to have one romance "option" per gender so long as I have the option to not have a romance with that person that is tolerable...not a good thing by any means...but tolerable.

If you don't like romances you should play one of the 100.000 MMORPG available where you are free to have your soulness hero...

Anyway.. asking Bioware to remove romances from their game is like asking Ferrari to remove the red from their car = EPIC FAIL

what a troll thread-starter post.
Ah yes .. "No Romances" .. we dismissed that claim.

suggest in a game which is all about choices, where no one is required to do any romance, and which offers more interaction as one of the key differentiators to other games the total removal of one feature you seem inapropriate and want to remove for any other player.
clever, but we see through your maskerade.. did they sent you ? did they made you ask ? .. but.. ask on.. i dare you. question for a question, answer for an answer

This. Choosing to be friends shouldn't mean that the dialogue comes to an abrupt halt. You can be close with someone without wanting to jump their pants.

I agree with this.  My Fem Shep wanted to keep talking to Ash and Liara as a friend, but couldn't do it.  I like the romance options but I also want the option to be friends.

Romance options are an essential part of every game made by Bioware, at least for me. Therefore I can only agree with MaxQuartiroli. :)
