What stopps you from not playing a romance if you dont like it?
Saying there should be no romances because I dont like romances is like saying there should be no warrior class available for Hawke because I only play rogues and mages. As long as the romances are not forced on the player I see little point beeing upset about them.

This should have been /thread

No, and to be honest I give litte effort towards romances on first playthroughs. I do think they add a vast amount of replayability.

I'm on my (unspeakable number insert) palythrough with DA and I am still comming across situations I haven't encountered before. That's quality and incredible depth.

Ah ok.

So you are saying it adds to the game, but is not necessary or a deal breaker for you.

 Correct.

primary reason for passing on that xp and leaving it on the retail
store's shelves

True.

But, what if the new mass market approach of Bioware excludes romances because the mass market doesnt care for it?

Would you still buy it?

Considering I've played a bunch of their games and not until DA even heard of the term ''romance'', as long as the story and characters are well written, why wouldn't I?

Edit: As long as all of this sim-simulation stuff is completely optional and I don't get punished by the game for not doing it and none of the accidental romance triggered and lose of approval if turned down stuff, then who cares?
Really, I had to reload a bunch of games just because every damn line with even the slightest bit of humor seemed to mean->flirtation.
And then the leave or take scenario......

I'd wait until it was cheap, I suppose...once the price got knocked off a bit. I'd eventually buy it--obviously not every RPG has romance in it--but the game would wait just like any other. BioWare is the only company I always make sure I'm first in line for, when it can be helped.

So, no initial buy without romances.  Gotcha.  Yet, I am sure people wont jump down your throat about it like they did for those who are mad about lack of race choice.

But the mass market does care for it? Bioware games are even known for its romances so... this "what if" is completely irrelevant. :bandit:

I like the option. I have characters that I did experience romances with my PC's, and those I did not. Since it is a choice and you do not have too? Even if you do not want them; why care either way? It is not like you are forced into having them. I personally find them a nice part of the game. A personalization to your favorite pixel companions. :D

I hope DA2 has romances, I think it brings realism to the game. (putting aside that this takes place in the Dragon Age and that there are mages and such)

There's a strong difference between the complaints and opinions toward it though, being one is a perceived reflection of themselves and the other an interaction complaint.

A controversial opinion among the Bioware fandom, I know. But I kinda feel like the discussions and kvetching about the various options, who should be, who shouldn't be, etc. overwhelm any other discussion. Not completely, it has to be said, but I dread something like the Tali crazies taking hold over the DA fandom. Thank goodness the "love" was evenly distributed among every character of DA:O...

I realize it is too late at this point, but no harm in making our voices heard as well, just to let the devs know that the dating sim aspect of the games are NOT the main selling point for everyone, and that it might have been refreshing to not have romances in this game?

I do agree. But we are the minority sadly. I mean: a romance option is good if it helps to tell a better story. But lately they have become so important and people are so interested in them that they seem to darken everything else... I mean, it seems that romances are necessary for a Bioware game, and not that they are just a tool to tell a better story. I was soooo happy that Awakening was romance-free :)...

See, I don't want to say "I definitely wouldn't until later", because if I felt enough hype for the game, I'd go and buy it. But for me, a gigantic big point of DAO was the romances--to see them removed would kind of feel like I'm not playing the same franchise. Other elements of the game were certainly important, but maybe not sixty dollars worth of importance?

On the other hand, if the DA franchise--or BioWare--never had romances in it, I'm sure I'd be ten times more forgiving on that aspect. It's all about expectations, I suppose.

As an aside Vittoria, a better word to use other then realism (because that carries so much baggage with it) is Plausibility.

If it wasn't for the relationships (barring romances) and incredible writing I don't think BW's games would be anything special; to date.

Not necessarily a no buy, but it would no longer be at the top of my buy list.  I'll buy a bioware game before I buy any other game.

I see what you mean.  Since they did have it previously established that romances are part of the game, it's something you like, and look forward to.

If they said DA2 would have no romances at all, it would be a let down.  Perhaps not a fatal one, but one that was profound.

Sort of like what happened to the people who lost their race choice.

So, even if the proposed "improved gameplay" was part of the selling point for having no romances (like has been said for lack of race choice by some folks on these forums) you would still buy it, just at a later date.

I see your perspectivePosted Image

Don't read Danielle Steel.  Read the Count of Monte Cristo, Blood Brice series and currently Valor Confederation.
and every now and then I did out my old Witch world series or something by Alistair MacLean.

'Mass market approch'?   That may be to be better discussewd in the other topics.

But seriously - no, I'd pass there.
Awakening has already refreshed what a nuisance Floodgate's NWN SoU
xp's lack of romance options was - and I've still not forgiven them for scratching
the female paladin's  companion scripts and convos out of the game.

So : sorry no can do without romance. options. period.

Actually, the two are quite synonymous:  they are both game features and add to immersion.  Take one or both out, and people will be unhappy depending on their tastes.

Can you imagine how many threads would be here if they said "DA2:  NO romances"

The storm would be horrendous.  That's one of my points.  Preferences are not wrong inherently.  People like certain things for certain reasons.  Critisizing someone for being unhappy that a game feature is gone but being forgiving to another unhappy group for the same reason is hypocritical.

Promoting understanding of why they might be mad is what I pointed out here Posted Image

Well, if I was a developer I would not be very proud of such a thing. I mean, there's nothing bad in improving the narattive and the storytelling... it's not bad to develop good romances if they help to tell the story... but I think that it would be better if Bioware game would be also remembered for their gameplay... just like Blizzard.

Maybe they should invest more time and money in the gameplay... it seems to me that since they are not using D&D, Bioware was never able to pull out a decent rule/combat system... and I'm not a D&D fan.

Just to say that sometime romances in Bioware games appear to me as the marketing trick to sell their games... instead of solid gameplay.

Ah gotcha.

So it is completely understandable why people who lost their race choice wont buy the game either.  Lack of game features means people don't buy, for whatever their respective reason is.
