This may be an utterly useless question, but I'm curious to know if anyone has any insight as to looking for 'Banes' had any significance other than being a wild goose chase to end up speaking w/ Kahoku which could already be done w/out having to speak w/ Dr. Michel & Capt. Anderson.
Thanks
Banes, any relevance?

Nope, it's just another path into that side quest.

You know, I was just wondering the same thing. I started replaying ME1 and just finished the whole Banes side mission. I thought I would find something (like his body) whenever I investigated the planet where Kahoku's men were, but I didn't find anything. And when you go back to Kahoku and ask him about Banes after his men are found, he doesn't give you any new info.

Glad I'm not the only one confused about Banes.

I believe it was content that was unfinished. They forgot to remove/change the lines of dialog.

I don't think it's unfinished. You hear about Banes from Dr Micelle. If you then talk to Anderson he'll inform you that Banes is dead and that you should talk to Kahoku. There's nothing really mysterious about it. He was probably investigating Cerberus and got bumped off for his trouble.

It really came off as anti-climatic. Personally I believe he's the Shadow Broker with his death being a cover up, but who knows.

behind the scenes reason: cut content
cool new reason: he's TIM (The Illusive Man)
I like the second theory myself.

That second theory is the most popular one for TIM's true identity, yes. As far as we can currently guess what BioWare may have been foreshadowing, I'd say it's either Armistan Banes or General Williams.
There's also the possibility of the upcoming comic giving him a 'new' name or keeping him nameless. I guess there's a certain charm to that last one.

Banes is dead. He can't be Illusive man or shadow breaker.

He may or may not be, both Anderson and Kahoku got the information from a group a marines who turn up dead.
The marines could have have been bribed into reporting him dead. And they get taken out to cover his tracks.

Occam's razor would suggest he is dead.

He could be TIM but then again what makes me believe there different is that banes doesn't seem bothered about working with alians and TIM as we all know isn't too fond of working with non-humans. Just putting it out there.

Due to the fact that the shadow broker isn't human you should have known this isn't a possibility
