Since ME2 came out, the BioWare store has showed the ME2 soundtrack as "Coming soon!" Now, to me, this seemed to imply that some hardcopy disc was in the works, and that BioWare's definition of "soon" actually meant within some reasonable period of time.

I'm not one those people who wants a physical disc for the sake of having a physical disc, though in my opinion there is nothing wrong with that. I'm after a physical disc for the superior sound quality. Sure, I can download the soundtrack from Amazon or iTunes, but then I'll only get some measely MP3 files. You see, this is a great annoyance for me and anyone else who cares about their listening experience as much as I do (there are people out there).

I've spent the last couple hours searching the forums for any and all answers, but found only two 'official' responses. The first, that a physical release of the soundtrack was not planned, and the second, that it was a possibility that was being looked into. However, that was something like 4 or 5 months ago. And still, the BioWare store says it's coming soon...

I would love love love love LOVE to get my hands on an actual CD of Mass Effect 2's wonderful soundtrack. I'd very seriously drop as much as $30 for it in the blink of an eye. I want it that much. So how long does it take a company to decide whether or not it's going to release a dang CD? Is one ever coming out or am I wasting my time twiddling my thumbs here?

MP3 encoded at 320 kbps are meant to have cut the pitches that human ears aren't able to hear anyways. But I agree with you. There still is a difference and it can be heard.

I import CDs from Japan, Canada and USA (UK doesn't count for me as it's EU just like the country I'm living in). So prices... that should prove how much I care about prices. Just have a look at Japanese soundtrack prices and most people would keel over.

I also imagine something like print-on-demand to be a possibility. But in most cases, the already existing format is just printed (on disc).

Well, to cut an endless story: I've always supported the idea of physical soundtracks and I'm also supporting it this time.

Mass Effect 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 are two blockbuster scores in bad need of physical release. Bioware should produce a 3000 print run, as a service to the fans who would want it. That way they wouldn't be left with tons of merchandise. There is incredible demand for videogame scores. I really wish Bioware would meet this demand. I'd buy in an instant.

I'm not sure if you can get the digtal copy at 320kbps, but if you can, you may as well get that. Even the majority of the hardcore audiophiles at Head-Fi agree that the difference between them and FLAC (lossless) is almost imperceptible.

I've purchased some soundtracks from Amazon (and also iTunes), and I can honestly tell you the sound is fine. I'd like to add my "voice" to the calls for a physical release, though. £13-14 for a bunch of MP3s is a bit high, I'd much rather have a physical copy for that price.

Anyways, 320kbps (CBR) is bad. You want it ripped in VBR - Same quality, smaller file size ;)

CBR will give you better quality than VBR given you can tell the difference. For the average listener it wont make any difference, but for people who deal in audio... Well they don't need me to tell them.

Depends on what VBR setting you use. VBR3 with a top bit-rate limit of 320kbps (encoded with LAME) is what I use, and they were settings recommended to me by an audiophile. Sounds perfectly fine to my ears ;)

We've been in discussion about getting the physical copies produced, but at the moment it looks unlikely that it will happen. We will keep working on, but will also update the site accordingly.

Jedi, would you advise those who wish to buy the soundtrack to get the digital version, then? If it's unlikely that a physical release will happen, I may just bite the bullet.

I hate digital distribution of anything, for music it is because of not having my own physical copy and the quality. I bought Mass Effect 2 OST from Zune Marketplace. They use 320kbps MP3s. They no longer offer ME2 OST on Zune. Which would mean if I lose the files I would have to buy it from Amazon and their music is in 256kbps MP3s, so a lower quality. Not to mention MP3 downloads on any service is a one time buy.

If I had a disc, I could play it and rip it anytime to any computer or CD drive/player. Not to mention, I like ripping my music to WMA Lossless which is so much better than any MP3 in my opinion (with the right audio system).

I'd suggest getting it digitally.

That's a shame, but understandable. Thanks, BWSJ.

Thank you for your responses, BioWareStore Jedi. I had hoped this thread would bring some sort of more official response than mere community rumors.

Exactly. I think having a physical copy is nice, but what I hate is the downgraded quality with digital distribution. It irks me that as audio technology advances, audio quality (with the ever-more dominating digital distribution format) has taken a plunge, and real enthusiasts are left with fewer and fewer options to get their hi-fi 'fix', so to speak.

With a lossless file, I can convert it into any other lossless or lossy format of my choosing to enjoy on my computer or with any portable device on the market. Unfortunately, the major players (Amazon, iTunes, Zune Marketplace) have unmatched music libraries and none offer a lossless download option.

I think we'll have to start a petition to get Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3 a physical release. The last physical CD I remember Bioware producing was Jade Empire by Jack Wall, and it was fantastic.

Jade Empire SE-2017-2
Mass Effect SE-2041-2 -> higher number, later -> OnlyShallow gets the point

(SE = Sumthing Else )

I was thinking more along the lines of Mass Effect being released after Jade Empire.

That' true, too (afair 2004 - 2007, JE Xbox, ME1 Xbox 360), but the CDs were 10 cm away, so...

edit: This still bothers me, but Sumthing still publishes game soundtracks; Alan Wake, God of War 3 and Uncharted 2, but also Halo Wars and Borderlands, so why no ME2 and DA: O? I highly doubt that interest in the mentioned titles is much higher. (About equal... I guess... )

It depends if BioWare (or perhaps EA) are willing to license the compositions out or not. It could be that ME and JE's soundtracks didn't sell in satisfactory quantities, and as such they've decided to not release any more.

P.S. Thanks for linking that website.
