"Before, I think Origins was kind of like Death Dealer meets The Hobbit. It was half really “raah, scary” and half really whimsical."

- I didn't really find DA whimsical.

"One main thing that the framed narrative story device has let us do was modify the UI stylistically in constructing a more coherent and consistent look. In Origins you had quite a few things – the leather book, the tribal thingies, the blood and parchment and so on and so forth. There were five or six different elements. For DA2 we use the tapestry elements in a lot of different ways – in the world map, load screens – and the actual presentation of the UI then becomes kind of like an illustrated manuscript that ties into the main story device."

- This sounds really cool to me

"That was also another factor in the decision, trying to put the art in a place where it looked different from other things out there. Basically, we have this epic game. Origins is very large. There’s no way you could make a game that huge that is as baroquely and finely detailed as Gears of War, say."

- Since this is about their decisions in DA2, the mention of DAO being very large suggests to me that DA2 will also be very large.

"We spent a lot of time on epic terrain – sweeping vistas is something we tried to do, and I don’t think with very much success in Origins."

- Hmm... to me there were some pretty epic places in Origins: Ostagar, the Deep Roads, the Mountain where you seek the Urn of Sacred Ashes.

"The combat is really over the top."

- I imagine this might bug some people, but I think it was what they were going for in DAO as well. How I enjoy it will depend on how it is handled - I generally liked DAO's aesthetic choices, but I don't know if the same people are making the decisions.

That's one hell of a crystal ball you've got there.

Anywho, I actually like the armor designs and I'm all for the world looking different since we're out of Ferelden now - I do wish the game looked technically better at least from the screens they've been circulating.

Nice interview.

I'm loving the fact that he mentions better lighting and more epic vistas- these were sorely lacking in Origins and I really hope they pull that off. Certainly haven't seen it in any screens yet though.

The combat is starting to make me think Kill Bill over the top- and I don't think thats a good thing. I liked Origins because the world felt grounded at least a bit- even if its a legend, I don't want Hawke going all Leonidas in 300. Thats just meh.

And I'm not sure I care for the jaggy armor- it just seems like they went too far the opposite direction of Origins visually and are retconning everything. I mean the Elves as plains Indians now? What?

It just seems too samurai/Conan now and from what we've seen thus far, look absolutely nothing like Origins. Having visual continuity is a good thing...

I like the style and all, but I'm not sure what to think of it...since if so much detail is going into that one piece of armor that we evidently have in the beginning of the game, does that mean we're not allowed to switch armors?

I hope we wont get to fight big kung-fu pandas in samurai-amor. I am dissapointed they chose this new artstyle rather than improving the one from Origins which was really nice. The only thing that bugged me in Origins was that the variety of some armors was not big enough. DA2 seems not to be my game =>Jade Mass Age. I think I need to reinstall Baldurs Gate one more time.

Looks interesting. Thank you for posting this. I didn't look forward to Dragon Age I but I did enjoy it and with this one, I am looking forward to it. The combat sounds great! I <3 it.
Maybe the Orcs team up with the Darkspawn...this is starting to get more LOTR like..which is good.

Still no explanation about the F-117 Nighthawk armor design.

Who's bloody idea was that?

Edit: Oh, and that Gears of War comparison worths a thousand of "you made bunny cry" points.

The art doesn't really say "Dragon Age"... more like "Year of the Dragon"...

Bloody hell!

Welcome to the Saturday Morning He-Man/Superfriends Show....

The armor is atrocious, the art style ridiculous and the Hurlock foot solider looks like a Joker puppet!!!

This should of NEVER been called DA2, it's not a true sequel, it's a total departure from all the things that made DAO the amazing game it is.

If they wanted to go on their little plastic 3D Flash interpretation of the DA world then they should of given it a completely different name like "Hawke's Redemption" of such AND then also given us a "true" sequel to DAO like the fans expected.

This is just a sick joke.

You are right..it is no longer Origins. However it is the sequel to it since it carries on from there.

I have to agree, it's like making Mass Effect 3 JRPG artstyle.

I'm just not digging the whole over the top everything the art seems to be taking. Origins was nice because the world it presented seemed grounded and while violent and bloody, it wasn't comically so. Adding buckets of gore and blood and sharp spiky armor does not make a game more "mature."

Come on- the armor looks more likely to poke out Hawke's eye than it looks like it would protect him at all...

We can change our armor right? Or at least customize it..at least.

I really don't think it's too early to say "the ART direction SUCKS" since we can make a pretty acceptable comparison between one of the most important elements of Dragon Age - darkspawn!

I apologize for the rather sad quality, you should brighten your monitor to see the comparison more clearly.

What say you, hmm? Darkspawn or zombie?

I haven't seen that concept art of Hawke before. I'd say he looks a bit more barbarian hobo than hot-rod samurai, but still, I kind of like it. I hope we see more variety in armor and clothing in the new game.

Could have something to do with the "Dark Brood"... I think I saw that somewhere, alas I can't provide a link.
