Before, I think Origins was kind of like Death Dealer meets The Hobbit. It was half really “raah, scary” and half really whimsical.

This is so true, and I'm actually excited to hear this being said. It's almost as if they took Yahtzee's comments to heart, among others. Much as I loved DAO, some of the storylines were spooky, but then the art or something else would make it feel... less so. The art was nice, but it was off in ways. Like, one of my favorite areas of the original Deep Roads that made me feel like the novels was this tiny section at the beginning of--either the part with Ruck or the spiders, I can't remember which--but it was awesome, and yet the lighting there was only used for that one tiny section. I was delighted with what they did in Awakening, and I'm glad to hear that DA2 will be more in that vein.

I think the fan base and the developers are all on the same page with regard to one thing: death to stupid mage hats! :wizard: Heheheh.

One main thing that the framed narrative story device has let us do was modify the UI stylistically in constructing a more coherent and consistent look. In Origins you had quite a few things – the leather book, the tribal thingies, the blood and parchment and so on and so forth. There were five or six different elements.  For DA2 we use the tapestry elements in a lot of different ways – in the world map, load screens – and the actual presentation of the UI then becomes kind of like an illustrated manuscript that ties into the main story device.

I personally argued against that a lot. There are various game reasons why [we did that]. It would be cumbersome to cast all of those spells again. But I think it really takes you out of the moment when you’re standing there, talking to a guy and he’s wrapped in glowing red plastic and there are flames shooting out of him and rocks falling on top of him. I absolutely agree that that needs to not happen.

I agree with that so hard. Seriously. It was ridiculous. Instead of thinking about what was happening, I was thinking about, "wow, that's a really strong purplish-pink up close. Annoying." But I'd rather the effects just be more subtle overall, personally.

One thing that is nice in the article is how they mentioned how the tools for the artists are much better so they can adjust and iterate quicker to in game assets. So its likely they'll be tweaking things plenty as they go along- so maybe the darkspawn won't look quite as Skeletor-ish in the final game? Pretty please?

I'm not going to lie, a few things really bothered me. First, I loved the way the darkspawn looked in DA:O, If they had stuck with the same concept and just improved details and such I would be really happy, but now they just look like creepy pale ninjas with really angular armor. Which brings me to my next issue: ninjas and cowboys fit nowhere in the world of knights and dragons! Barbarians maybe, but ninjas and cowboys?! ugh. And the elves are indians now? I still think the game will be great because of my tremendous amount of faith in Bioware, but with the information out now I'm very confused as to whether or not DA2 will live up to DA:O.

I just pray to god they give me some super bad ass armor for lady hawke.

this art direction is a piece of ****. samurais??? WHAT THE ****!!!
i am very disappointed as i loved the look of the first as did many other people as i have read.
more people liked the old art then this new one so why the change?? i just don't get it.
i loved origins but am EXTREMELY worried about this title with the available information.
in fact with the available information this is a must avoid for me. no way i am buying this which is a great shame as i LOVED dragon age origins but it seems bioware is destroying this series. :-(

I'm all for experimenting with new art styles. It's taking me a bit, but I'm warming to the new look. I still have some reservations, but the more I see of it, the more I seem to like it.

OH MY GOOD GOD.
i have just seen some screenshots in earlier posts that i haven't seen before and the art direction is absolute crap!
i loved origins soooo much i am heartbroken that bioware have destroyed this series.
the darkspawn look an utter JOKE, the ogre looks ridiculous and hawke looks like a medieval version of bruce lee but with samruai armour.
crap crap CRAP.
i am definately NOT buying this game.
i will get a pre-owned copy (so the devs and awful art team don't get any of my money) just so i can open the case place it on the floor and ****** all over it.
you probably think i'm joking but i'm not that is what i am going to do with this piece of ****, THIS IS NOT DRAGON AGE!!!!!!!

I'm glad they finally clarified this "new art style" thing.  I had no idea where they going with it or why it was something so important.  Seems like they are trying to point out the method of story telling with it-narration.  But the first few previews said nothing about that.  Huh, but those previews also called the Darkspawn "orcs" so what do you expect?

Okay, we go from Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire to Seven Samurai and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? That's a really weird transition. It's not bad per se. I like Leone and I like Kurosawa. It's just really random. Spaghetti westerns aren't exactly the first thing that comes to mind when I picture high fantasy. Good call whoever it was that said the game looks like the Dark Tower because that's what this article implies.

I haven't formed an opinion yet. In truth, I need to see it in action and see how the graphical style measures up in terms of presentation, overall atmosphere, and general animation, before I can pass judgment. I can say that it looks interesting, and if it gives the game a bit more of an identity of its own, I guess I won't be able to complain, but my chief concern isn't even the art style--I just want to see a game with less stock-animation and without all the stupid clipping issues, and that has nothing to do with art style at all.

I will say that I'm fairly skeptical of the darkspawn. The darkspawn in Origins didn't look terribly interesting, with exception to the Broodmother, mostly because they had a tendency to look like generic orcs and goblins, but the ones I've seen in screenshots don't look terribly interesting, either. I need to see more to be sure, though. When design changes like this happen, sometimes it's just too jarring for me to warm up to it properly for a while.

I do not like these screenshots at all. Everything looks so bad, especially the landscape and the Darkspawn. From what I seeso far, this game would be better of being marketed as a not a sequel to DA:O but a spinoff set in the DA universe. It's not a gamebreaker for me but I really liked that DA:O had a 'realistic' look to it. More polish and some work on the little details like beards disappearing into arms was all that was really needed.

*yawn* Masters of the Universe meet modern semiadult anime? booooring.

Also I'm concerned about the dumbing down that everyone seems to rant about anyway (Origins itself is already a little too mmorpgy for me - I wouldn't mind turn-based coffee-sipping speed)

Screenshots look almost comical. More screenshot's i see, the more it slowly edge's to Crackdown's comic look.

I am annoyed at the 'comic look' but i will buy the game.

The art style is shocking mediocre, doubt they will get much success with this game if it looks anything near the screenshots when it comes out.

They most be able to see it themselves,no?

I personally think that a large number of people are just judging the art style far too quickly, especially for the very first screenshots of a game that is still in production. When I first saw the screenshots, I wasn't sure how I felt. It was different, strange even, but.. it started to appeal to me after a few minutes (Although I have to wonder if I keep seeing Bethany with purple hair.). All one has to do is look at the first screenshots of Mass Effect and then look at the official-release screenshots and the progress they made from Point A to B is astounding, really.

Just give them some time to get everything sorted out and once they've got everything down to a grid, they will start to flesh out the textures and details further. I think it's obvious they've focused on designing Hawke the most for now, but that makes sense when it comes to marketing and trying to get players to.. appeal to him, you could say.. At this point, I understand the point of trying to draw attention to the main protagonist that you will be playing.

I expect good things from the art style and graphics.

I think it's refreshing to encounter something.. new every now and then, no?

I won't comment on the art styles themselves but

Why so much hate for the spell effects? Some were really cool (like the whole fade thing for Arcane Warrior) and gave me the feeling of playing with a genuinely mystical creature half way between this world and another. This was especially true during cutscenes when he would listen to the conversations unmoving until it was prudent for him to speak.

Oh well... I suppose there's no reason to keep a mechanic disliked by the vast majority.
