And showing some serious skin too. I suppose this will make them translate easier into the fantasies of some gamers.

Yup those are (as of right now at least) what the new Darkspawn look like.

Edit: check out the sticky(?) thread called something like "what do we KNOW so far?" it has more screenshots and other info that's been released on DA 2

How long until a thread asking for it to be a love option pops up,  if this is like the ME section anyway.

Honestly it looks like a downgrade, downgrade to meet deadlines, to get the game out soon, you wont have many fans after this BW, imnot a graphics obsesser, but this looks, bad. Maybe you should work on the game longer, push it back so it can be a good game, all I have heared so far make it inferior to Origins, not exactly a good sales tactic.

Its over the top- what I liked about Origins was that the world felt grounded and visually plausible most of the time. This stuff we've seen so far is style over substance, which seems to go against what Origins was trying to establish in creating a Dark Heroic Fantasy. It just gives off that stylized Jade Empire feel, which was ok for JE but I'm not feeling it in DA.

The artist is the JE artist, I believe, so seeing a comparison is totally justified. I happened to like the JE style, and the new style isn't bad (except the new ogres suck) and the spikes are stupid.

I won't comment on the art styles themselves but

Why so much hate for the spell effects? Some were really cool (like the whole fade thing for Arcane Warrior) and gave me the feeling of playing with a genuinely mystical creature half way between this world and another. This was especially true during cutscenes when he would listen to the conversations unmoving until it was prudent for him to speak.

Oh well... I suppose there's no reason to keep a mechanic disliked by the vast majority.

People don't hate the spell effects themselves, they disliked how they stayed "on" in cutscenes.  It was often somewhat disruptive.

That doesn't even make sense.  Why would making new darkspawn models get the game out faster than just using the old ones?

While that was true of the mage effects, I wasn't a fan of warrior/rogue effects at all. Utterly unneccessary and silly looking. Well, okay, I'll give stealth a pass... but all those others? Horrible. I don't need my character to be lit up like a christmas tree if there's an icon telling me what's active in the corner! :pinched:

Very annoying.  I <3 the mod so much that removes all the purple haze for bardic sustainables, the annoying sparkles, etc.  I didn't mind the Fade Shroud, though being able to see your PC's eyeballs through the back of her head was a little disconcerting.

Did the art designers spend a lot of time playing Dungeon Siege 2: Broken World?  The darkspawn redesignmakes them look just like the Morden Ravagers, and the screenshots we've seen look a lot like that surrounding desert.

First of all the dark-spawn concepts are poorly done for several reasons. first the colors contrast really harshly. Actually its worse than clashing colors because the dark-spawn are basically black and white and I feel nothing (maybe a little bit dismissive). all I can see are these spiky black triangles. Secondly, the highly angular look of their armor and weapons looks great in concept art; (I'm getting a tartakovski vibe from it) However that does not translate into 3d models. Highly angular models appear/are low-rez and look shotty (I find some slo-mo action-sequences in Samurai Jack un-appealing and they seem to move wrong). Third and finally; the size of the shapes also makes the weapons and armor seem heavy and breaks my suspension of dis-belief. That stuff might work in japan; but my concept of weight just doesn't let me believe you could move with that stuff (I've seen pushing weapon size works if you are very far away; like in the total war games: however here it is just to close).

moving away from the dark-spawn to the art direction in general;

Everything is very tonal. That's not a problem, it's a direction. However it becomes really easy to 'pop' something if you oversaturate; a double-edged sword. Hawkes armor has some very orange leather belts/straps put over some desaturated blue and green under-clothing. I look and I see orange straps. I don't know what I should be looking at when looking at Hawke. I also see some other things (mostly dark spawn stuff like the ogre) getting big-blocky shapes that just don't look 'real' or right. Hawke's sword would be another example of a big-geometric shape that I didn't really like.

DS2 by contrast had a more interesting art direction in my opinion and felt a lot less tonal (I really loved the color palette to that game; it just really helped the direction work; even though the characters and models to me came off as kinda blocky and low-res).

Beyond Good & Evil also had a really nice stylized direction (but also kinda blocky models and generally a low texture quality). honestly though it had some really nice characters and used color effectively. (it's been a while since I played that game so I'm gonna be short on specifics).

DAO's art direction didn't come off as particularly bad to me (not particularly good either but never detracting from game play). I'm not really sure why there needs to be such a drastic change, but I'm always up fro trying new things.

P.S. in case you haven't notice I like color more than tonal work; and the work that is done is awesome on a tonal level. There is some nice detail in Hawke and if that orange was a deeper brown and the red a little bit cooler it would be really awesome.

I don't really mind them changing art styles to be perfectly frank. I get the impression that half the change was done so that they could fit more bad guys on screen at once and make battle sequences much more 'epic,' and lets face it, if that's the case, then something has to give (and it can't really be sound, AI, physics or game play).

Even if people lead boycotts (or threaten to lead boycotts), it's stupidly unlikely that anything will change in DA2's development.

OH MY GOOD GOD.
i have just seen some screenshots in earlier posts that i haven't seen before and the art direction is absolute crap!
i loved origins soooo much i am heartbroken that bioware have destroyed this series.
the darkspawn look an utter JOKE, the ogre looks ridiculous and hawke looks like a medieval version of bruce lee but with samruai armour.
crap crap CRAP.
i am definately NOT buying this game.
i will get a pre-owned copy (so the devs and awful art team don't get any of my money) just so i can open the case place it on the floor and ****** all over it.
you probably think i'm joking but i'm not that is what i am going to do with this piece of ****, THIS IS NOT DRAGON AGE!!!!!!!

Edit: Spam image removed.

New art direction!? Based on what Bioware has provided us so far, the screenshots look horrendously outdated. Why is everything so "pointy?" Metal parts of the armor, spiky hair, etc, etc. Perhaps Bioware is targeting low end PC and console users. There are too many sharp polygons, meaning the graphics have been compromised to a great extent. In this age of graphic sophistication, the DA2 artists could have done a much more spectacular job without all the in-depth detailing that they've obviously abandoned in favor of -- what? HD polygons? Give me a break!! I was expecting far better.

+1
The spikes on the armour etc are really not doing it for me. BioWare have spoken about Dragon Age not looking menacing enough, well in my opinion these darkspawn of DA2 are not in any way menacing. The screenshots of the ogre aren't promising either. The darkspawn in DA:O looked like the kind of creatures that were threatening and blood thirsty.

I'll buy Dragon Age 2, but I can't help but question the point of such a dramatic and (seemingly) unpopular change to this aspect of the art.

the darkspawn look like a complete joke, the spikey armour is pathetic and why the hell do they all seem to have (very very very very very very bad looking) chainmail on their heads? since when did hurlocks have a chainmail hood fetish??

in DA2 i am more likely to burst out laughing at the darkspawn and ogres then be afraid.

the artists should be fired and bring back the old artist team.

You're entitled to your opinion,and I do agree 100%

Problem is,You can sort of see where they're going with the art direction though, I think they are about to make a teen rated game, that's why this new style looks so cartoonish

kids loves cartoon and spikey design

if they make this game look cartoony (as it seems to be the case) then they have lost one buyer and fan already.

When I saw that artwork from DA2, the first thing I thought was 'I've seen that before' and started pouring over my TSR artwork and book collection. This reminds me very much of the artwork and style featured in the Dark Sun world.

It works. It´s just for some reason you can´t see it edited, but if you open the thread again it´s changed.

On topic, the (Unreliable) Narrator must be a pretty bad one considering how his DS look a parody of the real ones. I can´t take them as a serious threat (and they probably really aren´t, thinking about it).
