Can someone explain to me what gems, silver rings, etc... are good for other than selling for gold?
I heard someone mention using gems for upgrading staffs & I have no idea how to do that (if that's true).

thanks & best regards,

Keep Garnets. Found that the hard way after being asked to bring 10 of them in a quest, while having already sold them all off.

You need 10 garnets for a sidequest. The rest are vendor trash.

You may have heard someone say you can donate them to the dwarves to upgrade them. But it's not worth it to hang on to them and waste inventory space. Keep garnets for the one quest, don't stress about the rest.

If you have any spares after you've finished Orzammar, you can donate some of them to the dwarf war cause in the crates in your camp and get some XP for it. I'm not sure how much XP you get from it, since I usually sell everything beyond the garnets.

It's not worth it to sell gems for xp. If you really want to bump xp, buy elfroot in bundles from Master Varathorn and turn them in camp. Or do what I do and travel to trigger random encounters.

As a note, you can only use the middle-range gems for the allied supply crate after finishing the Orzammar quest.  The 'middle-range' gems are sapphire, topaz, amethyst, and malachite.  As it was said previously, 10 garnets are required for a quest you get as part of the 'favors for certain interested parties' questline.  If you have Awakening, you'll need a flawless ruby for one of the quests, and a diamond for another.  And of course, remarkable gems, since they're gifts, obviously are used to increase approval.  I know that on the 360 they're bugged to only give +5 approval w/ diminishing returns regardless of who you give them to, even though they're supposed to be preferred gifts for Shale; not sure if that exists on PS3 or PC, or whether a patch cleared that up (as I'm on the vanilla version of the 360 game).

All other gems are just there to be sold.  They're not exactly great money-makers, but cash is cash.

Edit: Just a little extra bit of info; the DA wiki says that you gain 10xp for each gem donated through the allied supply crates.

You'll need a flawless ruby in Awakening, maybe a diamond as well (not sure on grade) but other then the 10 garnets, their vendor fodder or dwarf war chest bait.

Particularly outstanding gems are gifts for Shale, as well. You'll find these on vendors - they tend to be expensive.

Not really complaining, but both of those points were made in my post above.  Just to make it easier than a wall of text, I'll put it down again.

10 garnets for part of the 'favors for certain interested parties' questline
sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and malachites for the dwarf allied supply crates (10xp for each gem)
remarkable gems (all varieties) are preferred gifts for Shale- although there may be a bug that causes only +5
approval w/ diminishing returns instead of +10 approval w/ diminishing returns
1 flawless ruby for a quest in awakening
1 diamond for a quest in awakening

All other gems are useless and can be sold for money.

I'm having a hard time not saying 'absolutely nothing', and bringing out the air guitar....

(so no, the greateski, although I didn't know that was who wrote it. ;) )
