It´s quite funny, I had to think about our discussion here, because accidently I realized yesterday for the first time, that I could play as female in Divinity:Ego Draconis.

You can??? Ok this is ME2 all over again. Only when my husband bought it and started playing I found out you could in fact play a female. I did not follow the ME-forums so I did not know.
And THAT is the problem. I do not like to play males, thats just a matter of preference. So I often skip games if I am forced to play a male. I am still in doubt about getting the Witcher because of this. I would not have played ME2 if I had not ACCIDENTLY found out I could play a female. The reviews I read did not mention it, the screenshots and cover did not show it. BAD marketing.

My daughter just wrote off Fable 3 from her wishlist because "bah, you can only play a male again" after reading previews. And I havent been able to find out so far if that is true or not......Posted Image

It's not. They just said that there was two sons to make the trailer sound more epic.

4 male friends of mine are casual gamers...all of them wouldnt buy a game when they would see female lead...because that would make it unrealistic, or something like that, in their opinion.

I personally think different, but then again im a hardcore gamer...

That´s not true, I have seen lots of complaints here because some males thought the guy on the cover looks like Bruce Willis for the poor.

Generic Shepard model that ruins role-playing experience basically gap model.

Also, Samara use model face but changed body to make more voluptuous, bigger fun bags than IRL model.

A friend of mine happened to be in the room while her brother and some of his friends were playing Portal, all was good until the brothers friends found out that the lead character in Portal was an asian female and thus they refused to continue playing.

hehe...well so much times have passed since they annouced Fable 3...They put many infos, strange that you don't know but then you probably try to avoid spoilers unlike me  :) You can play as female and they even put few screenshots of females and 1 wallpaper, it is great! (you could play in Fable 2 female aswell just not in Fable 1) but ok this is not froum for Fable I just want to say that putting female would not do harm just that it is in tastefull, realistic way and they could put Bethany with Hawke on cover it would be okay too.

OO thank you, that will make her happy! I'll search the internetz again for those Posted Image. She couldnt play Fable 2 since she plays on PC.

But again this proves a point...try to be very clear about what options people have to play!

I don't get that it is unrealistic that female leads... What about Joanna D'Arc or Maria Teresia or female ninja warriors who were more deadliest and popular than male ones believe it or not I watched it on discovery channel and they are real people from real world or or you could count more of them I can't remember now unfortunately. Do you people inform yourself and read history instead of reading yellow press all the time? And now you telling me that to have leading female in GAMES is unrealistic? Damn I can't believe that some people still think like that in 21 century.
So Bioware should bow down to close minded shovinistic(spelling) and racists?

I know that more companies shows females with big boobs and swords in chain bikini and I don't like that either and Bioware should shine there where others fail and show that they are better and do better. And i got impression that most guys likes to see females in advertising I won't even mention when you go to play mmo half of server is fullfilled with males playing female chars. So I think that theres your friends (for posters before) are minority. And yes it is 40% female gamers now but how tehnology is going and most of people can afford computers and games and most of people want to run away from harsh reality into virtual worlds included womans too so there will be more female gamers each day.Ok I am done... And I apologize if I was so harsh I just can't stand some things...

Edit: Yeahmore  female leaders now I remembered...Boadicea and Illirian Queen and (pirate) Teuta...do I need to continue or it is enough?

Whenever you feature a female character, some women always complain about how unrealistic she is and how she sets a bad example for young girls.
When you make a badass looking dude, guys go "wow, he looks badass" and nobody complains.

Personally, I don't care which hero they feature, because I like the blood dragon logo. Posted Image I am just curious how Lady Hawke is going to look? We've already seen ump-teen screens of Male Hawke as well as his concept art. Judging by how they handled women (no pun intended) in Origins, I think they will do alright by them in the sequel. I loved the armors for women in Origins...it was practical and it made sense.

I would be happy just to see the concept art of Lady Hawke but sadly this probably doesn't exsist. Prove me wrong BioWare.Posted Image

At this point, it would just be great to be proven wrong about the DA2 marketing campaign, and know that they really will feature images of a female version of Hawke in screenshots and trailers.

People have asked why this is important to people who play female characters, and personally, it's a no brainer. I spend tons of my free time following the development of games that I think that I will enjoy, and so I want to see the kind of character I will be playing represented. Seeing screenshots and trailers will also allay any fears I might have about Fem Hawke being marginalized the way Fem Shepard was.

For the record, I would definitely buy a magazine that had a preview of Fem Hawke.

They could just leave a dark shadow on the box, to emphasize that there is no pre-set hero. It is not even about female or male, I didn't like their Shepard, Grey Warden and I certainly don't like their Hawke in the Trailers. That's why I hardly watched them (maybe once each, if even that). They can make Trailers just with the companions, so the 'hero' doesn't even need to show. Not that it is a big issue, just something disturbing in general with the way Bioware are doing it. And it is not about marketing, it is simply a case of stupid, which happens everywhere, even at Bioware.

The problem with that is that it makes femHawke or femShepard seem insignificant/non-canon compared to male Hawke or male Shepard. Other games get away with being marketed with the knowledge that the "protagonist" is fully customizable (Guild Wars/WoW); I think BioWare could get away with it, as well.

Marketing tends to assume that all people are idiots, or can easily misunderstand. Two main characters might lead them to either where is the beefcake with the beard! if they play female or where is the hot girl! if they play male.

You have to appreciate that marketing looks to appeal precisely to people who are not following the game (read us). So we know you can play two genders, what role Hawke has in the story, etc. But not everyone who might buy DA2 does, so the message is tailor made and specific.

This is why I think they avoid two characters. Because they want all their media to feature their cinematic scenes, and they want one face to be recognizable for DA2. And human faces are more recognizable than objects.

As for MMOs... there is no real main character in them. There is just an in-game avatar you make to get to level grind.

ETA:

Plus, the MMO reason for guys playing girls, IMO, is ultra-offensive (at least I think). The typical reason given is ''I would rather stare at a girl than some dude if I'm playing a game,'' which to me just sounds like hardcore objectification.

But if the majority of consumers are assumed stupid under marketing, then wouldn't that also apply to marketing for MMORPGS, with the vast majority of potential consumers who buy the game not understanding MMORPGs and their mechanics (Such as the scale of the game, dungeons, grinding, quests, PvP, all that stuff), or even buying the game without knowing that there is a monthly fee (In WoW's case) attatched?

I bet there are guys or gals out there who look at the cover of the game and go, "Yo, look at that badass dwarf dude and that mysterious elf lady, this game looks kinda cool."

The difference is nobody thinks the character in a MMORPG ad is the one you're going to play yourself.

But that assumes that the consumer knows that the game is an MMORPG. If we can't expect the average consumer to know that Dragon Age is a WRPG--a genre known for choice and customizability--how can we expect the average consumer to know that WoW or Guild Wars is an MMORPG, and not just some fantasy action game?

I've asked about a recent RPG that's been annouced if there's gender choice, no reply yet, all they show is a very generic looking male - muscles, rugged, very handsome, boring - but not shots of a playable female lead.

If there isn't a gender choice, I won't be buying that game, had more than enough of male characters for one life time in the past almost thirty years. Female choice to play as or I won't be buying.

It would be nice if they can show a rough Fem Hawke with the Male Hawke on the finalised cover, as well as on any farther screen shots. A lot of the time developers tend to look down on female gamers, as if saying 'You have no right to be playing video games, it's for men only'. Rockstar are one prime example with a refusal to even try a playable female lead for once in single player, I don't bother with their games anymore, too much of the same thing all the time.

While the, pretty poorly considered, percentage of female gamers may be supposedly 40%, that could rise if games that having more playable female characters to choose from while giving men their usual male character.

Make games more tempting to the female gender, be clearer with the marketing and let them know that there is a gender choice for the main character and sales will increase because you'll have attracted the undervalued female gamer market to your product.

A gamer should be able to be immersed in the game they're playing by having a character they cna identify with, instead of being forced with the usual male character.

I can't play games with male leads due to my past, and being unable to identify with males, to me they're just as much a mystery as women are to men. I get forced to play as male and I'm miserable, I don't have fun. Let me play as female, and even better let me create that character and define them with my actions, then I'm happy and hungry for more.

Gaming is something both male and female enjoy, it's not a male only thing.

I don't see why people get so wound up over this.

It's marketing, people. It's Bio's attempt to maximize their profits so they can make more Bio games. It has zero effect on your personal play experience.

The female-on-cover type that would probably help sales is the jigglemesh chainmail bikini, so it's a *good* thing Bio isn't going down that path.

I really don't see where this argument is coming from. I'm not a female, so I can't speak from a woman's perspective, but all of the examples I posted in my original post are (Very) successful games with boxart that  I would think depict female characters in tasteful ways (I included links for you to judge and all).

So yeah, I think you're making a radical generalization; I don't think how sexualized the boxart is has as dramatic an effect on sales as the quality of the boxart.

This doesn't really bug me though I admit seeing iconic Shepard in various videos kinda fritzes my brain out a little. I think "that's not Shepard" as I am obviously thinking of my Shepard. But then again that logic could just as easily be applied to any number of male players who used some other Shepard than the default. I sorta understand that Bioware has to market to guys. I get that. What I don't get is why they think they have to have a prominent male figure constantly displayed to market to guys. I don't understand why they feel like they have to have some set protagonist to draw people's attention. Lot's of character driven games still have marketing that focuses more on explosions and team dynamics and gameplay and so on. Why does Bioware think the only way to appeal to guys is to show iconic Shepard or Hawke over and over? This I don't get.

Regardless of male or female, I never like there being a "default" look for the main character, because it does seem to set that up as canon.
