Hello, dear producers. Whenever I purchase a game, I have a weak spot. The DRM. Now, I really really congratulate you on your achievement of implementing disc checks only in Dragon Age: Origins, Awakening and Mass Effect 2.

I sincerely hope that this trend will continue for Dragon Age II (and Mass Effect 3, obviously) because you are my favourite gaming company and no others can match up to you in story telling, interactivity, choices and an all round excellent product that is leaps and bounds above the competition.

That's why, I (along with the rest of your fans, undoubtedly), wish to implore you to not abandon the offline disc check and to not go back to the Mass Effect 1 days. To me any form of online activation (even if it's a one time thing) is a deal breaker for a retail product. For the digital downloads I can understand, since you need to download it anyway. But please keep the retail games "put in the drive and play" with no strings attached, just like Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2. That was a very very welcomed decision and I have bought 2 copies of the PC version of Mass Effect 2 for that reason alone.

So is it fair to assume that the trend will continue? I know it's maybe a bit too early, but many shops have started taking pre-orders and I can't wait to give the green light to mine!

I don't believe they'll go back to DRM. Fans do not like it, and it hurts the bottom line because too many people aren't willing to put up with it. Obviously, I can't be certain about anything regarding DA2 at this point, but I wouldn't be too worried. You can always cancel your preorder if they decide to use online-activation.

For the record, I agree with you. When I buy a game, I expect to own that game. Not for 3 installations, or 5, but for however many I may need or want.

Just use steam, anyone who doesn't like steam is a pirate, and probably aren't buying your products anyway, Steam is for winners, the best of the best.

It's not as bad as people make out, most of the people complaining are  just big drama queens who want to be a poor mans Gandhi, most likely in uni with all there other free thinking hipster friends trying to change the world with daffodils. They're actually more anoying than DRM.

id say an idea would be bolt on DRM that functions for say 2 months after initial release (by method of checking the date on the internet) then disables itself and uninstalls itself.
OR
DRM that checks the date on the internet during the installation process and if a certian time has passed it will not longer install this however would require the installer for the DRM to be a seperate module than the game data (so that it can uninstall/ not install without cusing problems this of course would make it possibly the weakest DRM in the history of DRM.

Some games get thier DRM cracked within a couple of weeks(And others much to my dismay are leaked to pirates weeks before the release date and as a paying customer who then has to wait those weeks is something that fills me with rage)  and once its on the internet it stays there no need to continue to punish your honest customers to quote my personal hero Mr. Universe "you cant stop the signal"

With this i can agree, would be nice if it had the same DRM as ME2 and DA:O.

I support and hope BW continues to use their disc-check DRM rather than any other form of DRM. I know DA2 will be a great game, I am hoping it does not get compromised by a bad DRM mechanic.

For once, I've got to agree with Rubbish Hero. I'm not a DRM supporter, but I'm yet to see the big problem with it. Yes, I've had a handful of games refuse to play 'cos of botched DRM (DarkStar One as an example), but it's never caused me hassle with any game worth playing.

Is putting the disc in really that hard?

I have some bad experience with DRM, mainly with SecuRom, most games refuses to run, out of the box for me. Its a usuall problem that can be solved, but i would rather not download a crack for a game i just bought...

re: DRM
Yes: NO DRM please. Heck, if you could do away w/ any form of DRM AND disc checks, all the better. :)
There are, for example, some UbiSoft games that I'd like to play, but won't, primarily due to DRM (particularly that 'you have to be online to play' thing: not everyone lives in a country w/ stable internet. I'm on a cable connection and even that goes on the fritz every so often, esp. during storms and the rainy season)

re: Steam
I dislike the service, actually, and only get games from them that I wouldn't want physical copies of (yeah. I like boxes, esp. nicely done Collector's/Ltd. editions). heck, if it weren't for the recent Steam sale, I wouldn't be using the service.

edit:
can't we go back to the 'good old days' where copy protection meant paper 'code wheels'? :wizard:
(hehehe, and 'cracking' the game meant photocopying the manual  *sigh*)

Yeah. I kinda like the "stack o' games look". Plus I like reading a physical manual instead of a PDF. And some extras are nice, too (maps, art books, etc.)

more than $1k worth of Steam games? wow. hehe. I think I've spent less than $50 on them (and only on the recent Sale thing  )

Bioshock and co, their DRm ruined my computer twice, was costy to get a new one, I hatred towards DRM is justified, and I bet I am not alone with this

are you pointing out the Euro to US Dollar price conversion for their games? (I'm in Asia, btw, so I think I pay US prices when I get stuff from Steam)
Because that's not what I dislike about Steam. I just dislike the idea of a.) not having a physical copy, and b.) having something else running in the background (even if it's relatively small/negligible *shrugs*)
edit: it has it's 'perks' tho', like having a built-in browser where I can check stuff without having to alt + tab and potentially crashing a game is nice.

I think I'd be actually sad if a time comes when all games are just digitally distributed.
As I've mentioned I like well done packaging (ex.: Warhammer Online, while, IMHO, a not-so-good game, was well packaged and nice extras: hardbound graphic novel, hardbound art book, a warhammer fantasy miniature, and something else, I think...along w/ the rather BIG box. Another nicely done box was the one for the now-dead Tabula Rasa MMO: sure it was a standard cardboard box, but the presentation inside, as well as the contents were nice. Even the Dragon Age: Origins Collector's Edition I got was quite nice: the wooden box was nice, tho' the map could've been better)

Imho only an always on drm (digital rights management with a permanent internet conection as a requirement),
bundled with essential parts like saved games  and area unlocks only possible if stored on a publisher's
serverr would turn even da 2 into a retail store's dust collector.

The extremly mild variant within da o only frequently causes ctd and once the 5 (?)
reinstalls per ea account (wich may include replacing standard components like a
graphics card or transferring DA to a new pc after the old rack burnt down without
a setup driven reinstallation) EA support handles requests for additional re-activations
very reasonable.
