Well, then that makes it even worse potentially- we do X,Y and Z in the flashbacks only to get to present time and have things completely different?

You'd know what happened.  You're the one who did it.

Whether people after the fact are aware of your exploits is beyond your control.

How is this going to be different in DA2?  Hawke always ends up Champion of Kirkwall, the world is always on the brink of war, etc.  Seems a similar set-up to DAO in that respect.

My reading of whats been released so far is that there will be different paths to achieve that goal. I might be wrong but thats my interpretation.

There were different paths by which to arrive at defeating the Blight, too.  What I was questioning was an earlier poster's claim that DA2 is shaping up to be much more open-ended than DAO was because supposedly your choices will matter more to the outcome.  And this supposedly will make up for the fact that we have fewer choices in character creation.

Now I can see why the 10-year time frame would allow you to see consequences of player actions which in Origins were just summarized in the epilogues, but the main story does not seem to be any more open-ended.

Umm?

Yes, one of the big changes for Dragon Age 2 is that the combat has been
revamped (or stripped back, depending on how you look at it) -- turning
it into a much more hack-n-slash type of game when playing as a Knight.
This is all done through a closer third-person perspective than the
first game; think Ninja Gaiden,
and how you hacked through dozens of enemies, blood spilling everywhere
-- now replace ninjas with darkspawn, and you have the basic idea
behind DA2.

Great. they are indeed making a God of War combat clone :(  Curt Schilling announced his RPG is doing the same thing "Oblivion w/ God of War Combat"

here is a tip, I ALREADY PLAYED GOD OF WAR 3X (4 if you count PSP)

God of War combat is PLAYED OUT.  Darksiders anyone? How many people bought that game?  It's not a bad game, but the bottom line is once you played God of War 3x, the combat gets VERY BORING>

RPGs, true RPGs have depth, strategy, challenge, tactics, allow for min maxing and party building.

The best hack and slash gameplay is the true hack and slash game genre like Champions of Norrath / Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance

Gameplay like God of War or Devil May Cry is NOT hack and slash isometric RPG, that is pure action air combo "stylish action" JPN anime cheese fest.

Considering the tone of the article I'm inclined to believe the journalist would prefer a more standard "Western RPG" design. Has the combat really changed? Unknown, Bioware did say that the demo was designed to be easy so the Journalists wouldn't get curb-stomped. So who knows what tactics, talents, and tricks were removed from the demo.

Just saying.

If that's the extent of your criteria for something being a "true" RPG, then Origins wasn't an RPG.  There was nothing challenging about it regardless of the difficulty level.  Min-Maxing is retarded and has nothing to do with something being an RPG.

If you say so?  I don't really trust people who throw around the "retarded" label.

I do not want this to be just another hack-and-slash game.. If this turns into God of War, Dante's Inferno or something like that I will weep.

Well the video seems to indicate not as God of War as feared. This is good. Keep the combat grounded. Air Combo Enemy Juggling has already come and gone.
