This is problem a really stupid question, but I must ask.

All right, so you know the button the left hand side of the screen that gives your party an opportunity to rest? So then you recover all your magic spells again and your health? Doesn't that mean you can just go through the game without using many potions? Since you can just rest after every battle?

So I was just wondering if constantly resting gave you some penalty, like less xp in battles or some surprise bad ending since you took to long to do everything. Resting just seems so convenient. Don't get me wrong, the battles are HARD but if you can just rest after every battle...

There are hardly any restrictions in the game when it comes to resting. Other than personal roleplaying purposes you are rarely penalized for taking your sweet time completing quests or areas. I believe that there are about 4 or so quests/events in the game that are time sensitive but other than that there's no penalty whatsoever.

Some areas though will have minor safeguards against resting so freely by spawning enemies on top of your party to disrupt your rest, this can be fatal if your party is all badly hurt and out of resources.

As far as potions go, they're handy to keep around since they are usable in the heat of combat so they can save characters in a pinch. A careful player though can certainly complete the game using hardly any of them it all is really a matter of your playstlye and tactics.

Thank god! I was worried I was resting too much. I wanted to save my potions for when I really, really needed them, and now I know I can! I'm still getting used to everything, and I was worried I would have to use all my potions because it wouldn't be a good idea to rest, but okay, now I don't have to worry.

Thanks you for answering!

Oh, and do they tell you when those timed missions are?

For the most part they do. Just pay attention to the cues the game gives you either through dialogue, journal entries or both.

Normally for timed missions, you'll receive some sort of messenger if you need to move along. Be careful about going to Watcher's Keep during a timed quest, it's generally 20+ hours travel back from WK so in many cases you won't make it back before something "bad" happens (e.g. if you don't get back in time for a Ranger stronghold quest, you lose your stronghold).

If you're on a timed quest, remember that times passes when you rest (8 hours at least untill fully healed).

Also, there's a small chance that you'll get attacked by - monsters - when you rest. This generally happens, I find, if you rest too much in the same place several times. Remember to hit the Q(uicksave) key before you rest, though.

And you will need potions when you're say level 6 or 7 in BG1 and also in BG2 when you're say very high in levels.

Good thing there's no penalty for taking too long. I didn't bring Jaheira from Irenicus' dungeon, and without a healer, it takes a LONG time to heal up during rest (30 days in some cases!). I came out of that dungeon with 300 days played ^.^

And yes from a roleplaying perspective it can get a little strange, IF you think about it. I ignore the days played number and think of most of my rests as short few minute breaks. Even when I could easily heal up and continue I hit the rest button regardless because it's faster than casting all those healing spells!

You can get ambushed. That's about it. Potions are last-resort items best saved for big, big fights that can be considered bosses.

The problem with resting in BG2 is that you will often get NPCs nagging you in-and-out because you're taking too long to do their quest.

A good idea would be to see how long you last without resting. Going into some battles dry can often up the difficulty and therefore become more satisfying.

Lol....its amazing that a game that is 10 years old can generate so much emotion and introspection about it's general game-play

For me I have only jut finished SOA and am about to play TOB ....cant wait :)

As I've said many times....best RPG I've ever played :)
