Hawke is a real life English surname.  I'm no history expert, but a forumite here who claimed to know a little about history said it was the surname of an 18th century English naval officer.  Fereldan names seem to come from or be based on names from the British Isles, so this seems perfectly appropriate to me.

So are ****** and Sidebottam. Why not use them? When I play fantasy games, I want fantasy-like sounding names for my characters. Not  Blair, not ******, not Bush and not Hawke.

Besides, I thought Hero status was based on deeds, not names.

Fantasy terminology always had a special rules really. You won't find a John Smith the Ruler of Cartharnar and Destroyer of Rak'sh Empire.

I don't understand why it friggin matters.  IIRC, the devs themselves have said that the franchise is supposed to be about Thedas, the setting, during the Dragon Age.  It's not specifically about the Warden who ended the Fifth Blight.  What on earth is wrong with seeing the setting from the perspective of a new character?

Except it was heavily implied we will continue adventures, and they were several lose ends.

This isn't something new--new characters are created all the time.

Not in DA2. Here you can create only one character.

Still a new character, though.

All of these arguments are utterly baseless.

Basically, Hawke will be as badass as people want to make him/her.  I plan on making Hawke badass, because I want to play a badass.  It's...kind of the point.  If anyone's so attached to the Warden that they want to make Hawke suck just so the Warden will still be the baddest mofo in Thedas, I'm sure that's possible too...albeit a touch petty :D

it was implied you would continue your adventures in download content nothing else and yes you can create one character but he can be played several different ways, wizard, warrior, thief, good, evil what have you. They never said sequels would have the warden. People just need to get over the fact you're not the warden anymore. I would get bored of my warden if I were stuck with him every sequel

Actually, you can create two characters in DA2, you can create a female Hawke and a male Hawke, something which didn't appear in the preview article in the Joystiq web-magazine. And by create I mean you can choose between being a man or a woman - in the game.

Hawke is still your hero, you are still playing him/her and controlling what he/she does, about as much free will as you had in DAO....except there is only one origin.

The biggest consequence for me is that this will lessen re-playability, but I thought DAO had a ridiculous amount of re-playability, so I am not upset that this may not match that. I'm sure I'll still go through DA2 several times, as I did with ME....just not quite as much.

I think Bioware made a mistake with DA2.  Do not treat
this as flaming or angry response-I will try to analyze coldly why some of us
feel distaste for the DA2.

Here is what it is-the DAO had you identify strongly with your Warden, his
story, choices, family, traits. This was covered over by net system even, where
you had achievements listed. You were then tempted by having your save files
stored. Most people probably expected that they will carry over their character
to the next game. Even if that wouldn't happen we were attached to our
achievements and adventures and hero.

Now-if Bioware would have started DA2 in similar way as DAO-people would
perhaps complain that they aren't playing a hero they liked before, but would
get over it, once they would start their adventures.

But Bioware made a mistake-they replaced OUR HERO with THEIR HERO.

This is what makes people angry. We are told that Hawke is a legend, we are
told to be amazed by him. But we already know the TRUE HERO. OUR Warden.
So a lot of people feel angry that their achievements and tasks are simply
ignored and some newcomer, a guy who FLED the blight like a coward, is now
presented as some legend, while their Warden remains ignored.

Frankly I wonder while Bioware didn't think of this. It's rather difficult
to change, and I doubt it will happen. Bioware might have decided to put their
artistic vision over the expectations of players. Rather than player's story we
are playing Bioware's story. This creates resentment and detachment feelings in
many.

Now I don't expect Bioware to change the game-too late for that.

But I am surely dissapointed and my hopes for sequal of DAO have been dashed. This is not what I and others were expecting.
Hawke evokes no connection to my former adventures, his name sounds so common and boring it is almost insulting. His artistic portayal makes me cringe(sorry) and his beard for a iconic hero is repulsive. I can't think of him of any other way as a coward who fled the Blight. Sorry again.

Try as I might I can't see myself spending money on Hawke. I will probably borrow the game from a friend, but wouldn't want to spend money on it.

Well dont forget that you can upload you DAO players file onto DA2 to affect the story line.

Perhaps because they're not willing to release such spoiler-y details yet? And the sooner we know about changes to the combat system, the sooner we'll come to accept it.

You may find yourself correct in your opinion when both games are released/played, but my opinion is that I like BW characters more than Blizzard's.

Kerrigan, Zeratul, Raynor, known characters of SC1 and comfirmed characters in SC2 sounds more interesting than Hawke.
I like BW characters too, but Hawke sounds sub-par compared to other characters they created and compared to Blizzard's

The problem with Hawke, and what I believe most of us are objecting to, is that Hawke represents a fundamental lack of choice.

Admittedly, in DAO our choices were limited, we had to be The Warden, but at least we could choose who The Warden was. This in a sense was also limited, but at least you were given the opportunity to choose that which suited you best from a plethora of substantially different backgrounds.

In DA2 these choices have been made for you before the game even begins, you’re no longer playing A Character of your choosing, you’re playing The Character of Bioware’s choosing, your name is Hawke, you are human, you are from Lothering, and that’s that.

For those people who like playing humans, or only ever play humans, that’s not a big deal you’re not really losing all that much, if there had been more choices, you would have probably gone with the Hawke-equivalent any ways. For those of us who like crafting our own characters or simply find humans incredibly mundane and uninspired in a Fantasy RPG this is a big deal, Bioware flat out cut out one of the main draws for us in DA2.

DA2’s Hawke is the bland gruel of mediocrity to DAO’s buffet, he is the safe boring choice that just about everyone can stomach and that will appeal best to the mass-market with the least effort. Coming from Bioware, who have a reputation for making awesome RPGs, this feels like a massive cop-out and it’s very disappointing.

Considering BW's other rpg's, you are surprised?
Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire fall into the same thing as DA2. NWN and Baldur's Gate are the exceptions (including DA:O, but that's a given). So, they have a pattern doing both, and BioWare's company goal is to make great story driven games, not just western style rpgs.

Yes, even knowing Bioware's history, I am actually surprised.

Which is why it is doubly disappointing. DAO was made in the same mould as NWN and Baldur's Gate and it never even occurred to me that Bioware wouldn’t include at least some element of choice as to who your character is as opposed to forcing their character on you like they did for their other franchises.

Didn't play their Sonic game, so not sure on that one.

Same here.

BioWare should make Shattered Steel 2, just for me to see the forums blow up again.

Hurray! Roleplaying! I do wonder if we will have the option to sacrifice the sister, for good or ill.

As a matter of fact they have already Spoilered that one detail... and its exactly what got me acted up.  I am lazy enough not to quote the original but they go on some lines of : Spells have been reduced. Skills have been reduced. Combat has been improved.  Imagine NWN, playing a wizard with 3-5 spells.

IMHO variability in game mechanics is an important aspect of RPGs... I have No problems with character limitation IFF it is necessary for the plot, but there is no denying that reducing this choice hurts RP experience.

Normally when you play RPGs you won't know how the story unfolds, it will be revealed to you when you play the game. And you won't the ending to the game. Bioware seems to have given us a goal with DA2, to become Champion of Kirkwall. And not by our own actions, but by hearing them re-told in the present. We then get to decide how Hawke became the champion of Kirkwall....

I have no intention of playing a badass Hawke or any other character for that matter. Or see limbs flying all around the place, as well as playing a game that is filled with gore and More) blood. I know that the average gamer today is around 35-40; it seems to me that Bioware (and EA) haven't quite realized that. Many people who grew up playing Darklands, Ultima, Wizardry and Might and Magic rpgs want to buy games like Dragon Age. And about 40% are women - of all gamers. I don't know EA gathers samples of who's playing their games. If they do, they probably do it by account. And my bet (and this is guess) is that many women play this, but they do this on the family computer, not on their own computer (I could be wrong, of course?)

So change his appearance to something that's not "cheesy."

How the hell do you know his sister is annoying?

And again, for the love of God, why do you assume that fleeing the Blight--ugh, you know what? Forget it. People like you simply can't be reasoned with.

You claimed the origins were important in DAO to people who "like to roleplay," yet you persist in assuming Hawke has one personality and one motivation (cowardice) that are totally immutable. It's like arguing with a brick wall. You want to hate it so bad, then go right ahead. But shoving your asinine speculations and assertions down everyone's throat is just annoying. If you've accurately determined that the game is so bad, then why do you still hang around on the forums dedicated to such a crappy game?

Why are you asking me?  How would I know?  The game isn't out yet--only the developers know for sure.  The difference between you and I, though, is that I think what I've heard so far is fine, and you've already decided that whatever the story is, it couldn't possibly be plausible.

I may not be surprised with DA2, but that doesn't mean that DA3 will be like DA2 or DA:O. Am I disappointed with the limited choices? Sure, but I think it's for story purposes, which I can forgive if that's the case.
Here's to the optimistic "maybe next time." I hope DA3 will be more open with choices.

Thank god it isn't an annoying cousin from the Alienage. A character like that would have sucked. Next thing you know the might give you a whole family, complete with mother and father and even siblings and nephews!

is a peasant

Totally unlike the Bhallspawn in BG and BG2, who didn't have a fixed background at all and could totally grow up in different places not named Candlekeep.

Yeah, what a coward. How dare he not stay and get murdered. That's what brave people do. Stay and get murdered.

His default face that BioWare chose is cheesey and i just wanna smack.
He is supposedly, or becoming, Champion of Kirkwall which pales in comparison to Kerrigan's story of betrayal, revenge, and rise to power.

But honestly your right, I don't know much about Hawke other than that, but I can garuntee the characters of SC2 will be much better than Hawke :wizard:
