The irony is that, while hideous, the new look of the Hurlocks is actually closer to DA lore. Darkspawn are supposed to wear armour scavanged and patched together, sometimes from tiny pieces. In Origins, all the Hurlocks wore full sets of complicated, well-maintained armour. Now they look like someone hacked apart an iron cauldron and strapped the pieces onto them.filaminstrel wrote...
I just wish the hurlocks would have a back plate. Their bare backs with the straps just look comical. Not comic-book-al, just comical.

Of course, the problem with that theory is that these new darkspawn appear in Lothering, while it's being sacked... before the archdemon is slain.

Well, if it helps, you can also think that the narrator doesn't know about the darkspawn looking different during a Blight.filaminstrel wrote...
Yeah, I like to think it was the archdemon in Origins which allowed them to organize and mass produce the appropriate weapons and armors they needed for an attack on the surface. It became the sort of central nervous system to a previously decentralized horde. And it also affected a change in their physical appearance.

Ahh yes, perhaps.

Considering that ogres are darkspawn, I remember I was somewhat surprised that genlocks and hurlocks weren't called goblins and orcs colloquially. "Ogre" has always seemed like the odd one out....Face of Evil wrote...
I've seen a couple of references in gaming articles to "orcs and goblins" in DA2. I assume this is a mistake on the part of the writers and they are actually referring to genlocks and hurlocks. Still, the fact that a few different articles have made me pause: is DA2 actually introducing goblins and orcs? Honestly, that would be a misstep, as darkspawn more than adequately fill the role of monster mooks. There's no need to shoehorn in D&D monsters that don't fit with the setting.
As I said, I assume this is an error made on the part of the reviewers — we all make mistakes — but could someone clear this up?
