In case you never heard of George RR Martin, Bioware admits his work influenced DAO.   Fantastic novels indeed.

I loved reading the Song of Ice and Fire, in the same vein but with a more traditional fantasy troupe, i would recommend the Acacia series, book 1 and 2 are out at the moment.

Acacia: The War with the Mein Book 1

Great books, sadly, it's hard to reccomend this series because I don't think he will ever manage to finish it. I invested too much into reading this and he's still far away from ending it. I think he should make the final book "A Dance with Dragons". He's just getting too old =(.

Yeah, it's epic. I hear it might be brought to HBO!

Hmm, I've never read the series, but I do have read "The Wheel of Time" and "The Sword of Thruth".

Which of these 2 books looks more like the "Song of Ice and Fire" in comparisment? SoT was more detailed and darker, while WoT had a deeper story with a lot of suprising moments.

R.R. Martin is together with Joe Abercrombie the best for "mature" Fantasy.. love their epics and characters.

Alas i hope Kranis won´t be right and it will not end like Wheel of Time :/

They're okay. Great a decade ago when the first book came out, but dark fantasy has moved on and George RR Martin has apparently forgotten how to write.

I second this. Perhaps I've grown as a reader but his writing surely hasn't.

Seriously though, the only dark fantasy books that even come close are Bakker's Prince of Nothing series. And the next book will come out in 2010.  No, really, it will. Why are you laughing at me...:(

Admittedly I've only read the first couple of books, but find them pretty good. I like that the setting is more "historic" than most fantasy settings, and that you never know whether the main characters will live or die. Also, there's more sex, incest, killing of children, madness and violence against women than most fantasy books I've read.

I'm not saying it's needed to have these things, or that I like it more than other things, but in a setting where someone's life isn't worth much unless you're a member of the elite (royalty), it's natural that it happens. I hate when authors avoid mature elements when they're a natural part of the setting (like a viking book without killing and raping of nuns).

I don't expect Dragon Age to be quite as mature as A Song of Ice and Fire, but I think it will be somewhat in the same spirit.

He's gotten a lot of writing into 'A Dance with Dragons' now. As of now, it's actually longer than 'A Game of Thrones'!

From what ive seen of the DA:O universe so far, it is drastically different from the world that exists in ASOIAF

No I won't.

Because I won't read them. Spam failure.

Second this about The prince of Nothing series, one of the best fantasy series and up there with Malazan.

I found out about A Song of Ice and Fire through Dragon Age a few years back. I decided to read the series and it is great indeed!

Jeez, just trying to contribute to the community.  I don't have any agenda here.  Thought someone might enjoy  some good reading while waiting for Nov 3rd.

It looks like it's heavy on politics between the kingdoms....Does this series have sword and sorcery type stuff to go along with it?

Well, in ASOIF there is the Night Watch which is very much like DAO's Grey Wardens.

The Night Watch is an infamous, misunderstood brotherhood that defends the realm from "the others" (the blight)

There is magic, but it's more based in alchemy.

etc ...

Just finished the 4th book "a feast for crows" a couple of months ago and they are really good- plus if you start reading them now you wont have the frustration of the big gap between the 4th and 5th books- dance with dragons is nearly finished!

Agreed. He seems to spend his time fiddling with anthologies, his mini collection,  constantly going to signings all over the world and blathering on about football.

He is gonna pull a Jordan and kick the bucket befor he finishes. He doesnt look to be in the best of health.
