The dislike for limiting player choices when it comes to creating their character is not limited to my person only. Several people have expressed their own dislike for this. As they did for the name Hawke which is truly and honestly(without any malice) a very uninspirational nameDavid Gaider wrote...
In other words-- I get the fact that you liked them, but the

That's a shortsighted view in my opinion. Once you give your clients more options you really shouldn't reduce them later once they are used to them. Somebody else noted-if you sell three flavours of ice cream and then limit it to one, don't be surprised the clients won't like it.We're okay with having a single, solid opening to our story now that
Origins has introduced our world.

That's not what I heard... I heard you've got a super space satellite in space which will send mind control beams down from space to force us to spend money on DA2, even if we don't intend to ever play it!
I also heard that you staple kittens together as a hobby. Is that true?

We've been playing as human only for decades and now because bioware decided focus on a character who will be changing the course of their world, people are complaining like 2 years old kids.
Don't like play as human? Go play Origins, go play wow, or any other game that allow to choose other races and let bioware do what they do BEST: Create a game that will be remembered for years to come.

If you don't intend to play our game, and wish to take your ball and go
home-- okay! Totally fair. No money from you. That's how it works. If,
however, you intend to barge into every thread and announce your beef no
matter what the thread is discussing-- I'd ask you not to do that,
unless you wish to be shown the door. That's rude.
You are selling a commercial product. As a potential buyer I reserve the right to complain about its quality and form. If the forum of your company and products you are selling is reserved only for praises of your product-state it openly here and now.

I'm going to open this post by saying that I am not English, and thus I do not have the same POV towards DAO names as most other forumites. I can't really tell when something sounds cheesy.
Anyway I'm going to basically copy what I wrote in another topic.

Most (human) names in DAO were meaningful (Alistair= "defender of men", Cailan= "child", Duncan= "brown chief" - I'm not making this up, look them up if you want to), but the devs don't know how you'll play your Hawke. So they probably thought, "If we can't give the protagonist a meaningful name, let's at least give them a cool one".
Makes sense to me.
Also, maybe I misunderstood, but did you just list consistent with the fantasy milieu as one of the bad things?

Can you understand being upset that a series you liked and cared about being destroyed by "audience expansion" and pandering to a younger demographic? When you're upset by something, you feel the need to express it.

If I buy a sandwich and it is mouldy, I have a right to complain. If I walk past a sandwich shop and they are making cucumber sandwiches (I ****ing HATE cucumber) and I storm in to complain about their sandwiches, they will quite rightly tell me to choose a sandwich that I do want or buy my sandwich somewhere else.

Wow, you don't get it do you?
The forum has rules you agreed to. If you wish to start a thread criticizing the product, you can. And you have. David Gaider is asking that you don't just hijack threads, not saying you are, but the forum isn't just for praising BW products, or there would be more locked threads.
Edit to stay on topic: I'm guessing Hawke fleeing Lothering for good may have something to do with Bethany or his dragon arm thing.

How do you lose a client whom you never wanted?
Hardcore cRPG gamers aren't their main audiance anymore, I've long accepted the fact that I will quit gaming in 5+ years and fire up my good old favourites once in a while til' the rest of my days.

The Ferelden Wardens wouldn't have been able to do anything without the help of people who stayed and fought. What about all the other solders and fighters in Ferelden? Why did they stay and fight? The Coward Theory is based on an interpretation that Hawke was able to fight and chose not to.

Just because the name is over-the-top, you're not forced to play Hawke like an over-the-top B-movie protagonist. And even if DA2 were an over-the-top B-movie (assomemost doomsayers think it will be), it's a frickin' surname. Hawke. Not Dynamite McChainsaw, son of Firesword the Destroyer.

It was said in a sense indicating that the name is uninventive, unoriginal, predictable, cliched. Milieu is the french term for middle, ie: average, center of the bell curve.

Those are real life names not fantasy heroes.
The name Hawke like somebody else mentioned is similiar to often found names in pulp-fantasy-Storm, Wolf, Raven and the like. It is very unsophisticated and evokes imagery of cheesy/pulp fantasy scenarios. The imagery on the main site doesn't help.

None I've ever heard of! Now I'm going to go play Final Fantasy, a series where you can choose from various races and characters. That's why it's known as one of the greatest RPG series of all time, right?

Not really. Hawke in this game is more like those real life names. Ferelden was inspired to a certain degree by Anglo-Saxon England. There are people named Hawke for the same reason there are people named Howe.

So to be less cheesy/unsophisticated... you can't choose a real-life name?
